Final: Huntsville 4, Mobile 2 (Game 1)

 

The Huntsville Stars jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning of game 1 today and rode that to a 4-2 win. Starter Arcenio Leon was activated from the disabled list to pitch today. Leon had been on the DL with an issue with his side. Leon pitched 4 innings, allowing 1 earned run on 3 hits and 3 walks. R.J. Seidel (1-0) worked the 5th and was credited with the win today. Seidel allowed an earned run on 2 hits. Eric Marzec worked a scoreless 6th and closer Casey Medlen worked a clean 7th to pick up his 4th save on the year.

Second baseman Nick Shaw led the Stars offensively today. Shaw went 3-4 with 2 runs scored. Centerfielder Rene Tosoni drove in 2 runs with a clutch, 2 out, 2 run single in the first. Hector Gomez, Kentrail Davis, Jason Rogers, and Robinzon Diaz each singled for the Stars. Mike Walker reached twice on walks. Gomez, Davis, Tosoni and Ozzie Chavez also drew walks.

Rattlers shut out Loons for fourth straight win

Roache homers as Gibbard and Lopez combine on 5-hit shutout

MIDLAND, MI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers are rolling. Victor Roache hit a first inning home run to give the Timber Rattlers a lead at Dow Diamond on Sunday afternoon. Pitchers Ryan Gibbard and Jorge Lopez combined on a five-hit, 5-0 shutout as Wisconsin won their fourth straight game.

 

Roache put the Timber Rattlers (12-14) in front in the top of the first inning. Mitch Haniger coaxed a two-out walk against Great Lakes starter Lindsey Caughel. That free pass was the first issued by Caughel in his first 21-2/3 innings pitched this season. Roache was next and he unleashed a line drive to right-center that easily cleared the wall for a two-run homer. The dinger was the second of the season for Roache.

 

Wisconsin plated two more runs in the top of the second. Caughel walked Alfredo Rodriguez with two outs and Orlando Arcia singled to put runners on the corners. Arcia would steal second with Tyrone Taylor at the plate to get two runners into scoring position. Taylor sent a wicked line drive past the glove of third baseman Paul Hoenecke into left to score two runs. The play was originally ruled a two-run single for Taylor. But, was switched to an error on Hoenecke before the start of the bottom of the third.

 

-If a ball that should have been easily caught by Gomez but bounces off his wrist is a 2B in MLB then give Taylor his hit!

 

Gibbard worked five scoreless innings as the starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. He allowed three hits, walked two, and struck out three. The Wisconsin offense gave him one more run as a parting gift.

 

In the top of the sixth inning, Haniger doubled to start the frame. Adam Giacalone drove in Haniger with a one out single for a 5-0 lead.

 

Lopez took over for Gibbard in the bottom of the sixth inning and kept the Loons (12-17) off the scoreboard over the last four innings. Lopez allowed two hits, walked one, and struck out three to earn his first save of the season.

 

The final game of the series at Dow Diamond is Monday morning. Eric Semmelhack (1-0, 5.40) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Great Lakes has Angel Sanchez (1-3, 5.88) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 9:35am CDT.

I'd take more of this from Jorge Lopez, that's for sure. Chris McFarland's hit streak came to an end today, he narrowly a missed a double (just foul) and then grounded out. Click McFarland's link to see his last 10 games, his more than half of his total strike outs have come in the last 10 games, 17 out of his 25, hopefully he turns it around soon. Victor Roache hasn't had a multi hit game since 4/27 but the HR today set a good tone. Clint Coulter has been really struggling with breaking stuff out of the zone, he's 6 for his last 33 hitting just .182 over that span.

 

It's just about time to start a Free Mitch Haniger Campaign, he's had a really nice season

thus far.

Final: Mobile 4 Huntsville 3 (Game 2 - 10 innings)

 

Game 2 saw Mobile jump out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning. Unlike game 1, Huntsville was able to fight back and tie the game at 3. The game stayed tied until the bottom of the 10th when the Bay Bears were able to push the winning run across the plate to split the double header and win the series. Starter Alan Williams settled down after the rough 1st inning and was able to work 5 innings today. He allowed the 3 runs on 4 hits and 1 run, but only allowed 2 hits after the first inning. Williams struck out 2. The Stars bullpen was able to pitch 4 scoreless innings before giving up the winning run in the 10th. Thomas Keeling worked 2/3 of an inning, allowing a walk and striking out 1. Mark Williams was next in, working 1 1/3 innings and giving up 2 walks. Brian Garman worked the 8th and 9th innings today. He also walked 2 while striking out 1. Santo Manzanillo (1-1) was brought in to work the 10th. Manzanillo was a victim of control. After walking the leadoff hitter Raywilly Gomez, he uncorked 2 wild pitches to allow Gomez to get to 3rd. Manzanillo recorded a strike out before giving up a single, driving in the winning run.

 

The Stars pitchers held the Bay Bears to only 5 hits over 9 1/3 innings, but did walk 7.

The Stars pounded out 8 hits and drew 9 walks but were only able to score 3 runs in game 2. Jason Rogers, Brock Kjeldgaard, and Rene Tosoni each had 2 hits. Ozzie Chavez and Joey Paciorek had the other 2 hits. Kentrail Davis drew 3 walks, Mike Walker and Paciorek each drew 2, and Hector Gomez and Kjeldgaard each drew 1. Davis stole his team leading 8th base and Walker swiped his 1st.

Mobile nearly won the game in the 7th, but a heads up play by Ozzie Chavez kept the game tied. The inning recap makes it look like a simple force out, but it was more complicated than that. The runner, Ahmed, was actually safe initially, but he overslid the base and Chavez tagged him out before the winning run could cross the plate.

Stars Split Doubleheader, Lose Series to BayBears

To cap off a stretch where they played 28 innings of baseball in 25 hours, the Huntsville Stars split a doubleheader with the Mobile BayBears, the last game being the rubbermatch between the two teams at Hank Aaron Stadium on Sunday.

 

In game one, the Stars got off to a rare quick start off of BayBears starting pitcher Anthony Meo.

 

After allowing the first three batters of the game to reach base, Meo gave up a sacrifice fly to Stars first basemen Jason Rogers to give Huntsville the first run of the ballgame. Later in the inning, a two-run single from centerfielder Rene Tosoni made the score 3-0.

 

Those three runs were plenty for the Stars pitchers, especially starting pitcher Arcenio Leon.

 

Besides giving up a solo homer to BayBears center fielder Ender Inciarte in the third inning, the 26-year-old righty pitched very well in his first start since being placed on the disabled list on April 20th. The former Astros farmhand threw four innings of one-run baseball, giving up just three hits in the process.

 

Since Leon did not pitch long enough to qualify for a win as a starting, Stars reliever R.J Seidel improved to 1-0 on the year after giving up a run in an inning of relief.

 

The Stars got their insurance run in the fifth inning on a RBI single from right fielder Kentrail Davis.

 

Stars closer Casey Medlen shut down the BayBears in order in the seventh inning to notch his fourth save of the season.

 

In game two, the BayBears returned the Stars favor from the previous contest and provided an early surge in the first inning off of Stars starter Alan Williams.

 

After Williams walked Inciarte and gave up a single to second baseman Mike Freeman, a sacrifice fly by third baseman Nick Evans gave Mobile their first run. Williams then surrendered a two-run homer to BayBears first basemen Jon Griffin to give Mobile a 3-0 lead.

 

However, that deficit was washed away by the Stars offense almost immediately.

 

Following RBI singles by both Tosoni and second basemen Ozzie Chavez cut the BayBears lead to one in the second, a RBI groundout from Stars third baseman Mike Walker in the top of the third knotted the game up at three apiece.

 

The game remained that way all the way up to the 10th inning, where the BayBears ultimately clinched a doubleheader split and a series victory.

 

With Stars reliever Santo Manzanillo on the hill, catcher Raywilly Gomez drew a four-pitch walk to begin the inning. During the next at-bat, two wild pitches from Manzanillo allowed Gomez to advance to third. Two batters later, Freeman launched a line-drive well over the head of Tosoni in left-center field to win the game for Mobile.

 

The split in the doubleheader clinched the Stars fifth straight series loss.

 

After an off day on Monday, the Stars will welcome the Jackson Generals to town to open up a five-game series at Joe Davis Stadium on Tuesday. Huntsville will send RHP Jimmy Nelson (3-1, 1.91 ERA) to the bump to square off against Jackson LHP Ronenis Elias (1-2, 2.93 ERA). First pitch is at 6:43 PM.
