Final: Huntsville 5 Mobile 3 (Completion of suspended game)

 

The Huntsville Stars put together a 3 run rally in the top of the 7th to defeat the Mobile Bay Bears 5-2 in the completion of the suspended game Saturday night. Starter Ariel Pena worked the first 2 2/3 innings before the rains forced the suspension. Pena gave up 1 unearned run on 1 hit and 2 walks while striking out 3. Eric Marzec finished up the bottom of the 3rd when the game resumed today and struck out the only batter he faced.

 

The rehabbing Mark Rogers worked the 4th and 5th. The 4th was a 1-2-3 inning where Rogers threw 7 pitches, 6 for strikes. Alex Cohen mentioned that Rogers topped out at 92 tonight. The 5th was more of an adventure for Mark, allowing an earned run on 1 hit and 1 walk. The run he allowed scored when he threw a wild pitch. Rogers threw a total of 27 pitches tonight, 14 for strikes.

 

6'-8" right hander Greg Holle worked 2 scorless innings to pick up the win. This was Holle's second straight strong outing after struggling in his previous 4. Holle allowed 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 3. The other 3 outs were recorded via ground outs.

The Stars scored 5 runs on 6 hits tonight. Joey Paciorek and Hector Gomez both had 2 hits. Gomez also was credited with 2 sacrifices and stole a base. Kentrail Davis and Mike Walker had the other hits. Nick Shaw, Brock Kjeldgaard, and Rene Tosoni each reached base via walks.

 

With the game tied and the bases loaded with 1 out, Stars manager Darnell Coles channeled his inner Ron Roenicke and put the suicide squeeze play on. Hector Gomez got the bunt down and Tosoni scored the go ahead run. The next batter, Kentrail Davis then came through with a 2 out, 2 run single to add on insurance runs. This is the kind of inning that has eluded Huntsville in many earlier games.

The Stars were only able to muster 4 hits and 1 run as Mobile won the regularly scheduled game 4-1 tonight. Stars starter Andy Moye was cruising through 4 innings. The Bay Bears were able to get to him for 3 runs in the 5th though and that proved to be the winning margin. Moye (1-3) ended with a line of 4 2/3 innings pitched, 5 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned, on 5 hits and 1 walk while striking out 3. Alex Cohen mentioned during the broadcast that Moye was consistently in the 88-91 range. Lefty Thomas Keeling finished up the 5th giving up a hit that allowed an inherited runner to score. Santo Manzanillo worked the bottom of the 6th for the Stars allowing a walk and no runs.

Manatees center fielder Chadwin Stang went 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBI as Brevard County defeated the Dunedin Blue Jays 5-4 on Saturday night in Dunedin to salvage the final game in a three-game set.

 

DUNEDIN, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees used the long ball and some stellar defense to hold off the Dunedin Blue Jays 5-4 and avoid the series sweep at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium on Saturday night.

 

With a run already on the board in the frame, closer Seth Harvey entered with runners on the corners and two outs in the bottom of the 8th inning. With the Brevard County (15-14) leading 5-4, Harvey walked Derrick Chung after K.C. Hobson stole second to load the bases.

 

Marcus Knecht then lined a hard hit ball to the left side. Third baseman Brandon Macias dove to his left, but could only get a piece of the baseball, which deflected towards shortstop Yadiel Rivera. Rivera picked up the ball with his bare hand and fired over to first to barely beat a hustling Knecht.

 

The 'Tees would load up the bases in the top half of the ninth inning against Dustin Antolin, but Antolin struck out T.J. Mittelstaedt and retired Greg Hopkins to escape the jam.

 

In the bottom half of the ninth, Dunedin (17-11) didn't go down quietly. Harvey walked Peter Mooney with one out before Jon Berti sharply grounded a ball to Yadiel Rivera who stepped on second and threw over to first in plenty of time to turn the game-ending double play. It was Harvey's first four-out save of the season. For Harvey, it was his seventh save in as many opportunities this year.

 

Trailing 1-0 in the third inning, Brevard County put a three runs on the board to take the lead. Chadwin Stang drove in the first run of the frame with a RBI single to left on a chopping ball that third baseman Andy Burns had trouble with when he appeared to slip trying to make the play. The next batter, Mittelstaedt, launched a two-run home run to right field to give the Manatees the 3-1 lead.

 

That score would hold into the seventh inning. John Dishon singled with two outs and then stole second to get into scoring position. Dishon finished 3-for-3 with a double, a walk and two runs scored.

 

Stang then smacked a two-run home run to straight away center field to double the Brevard County lead. Stang was 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBI on the evening.

 

Brent Suter (2-0, 2.13) earned his second win in as many starts with the Manatees. Suter lasted 6.2 innings and allowed three runs - two earned - on five hits. He walked one batter and struck out three. Two of the runs came when Matt Newman, the final batter that Suter faced, lashed a two-out, two-run double in the seventh.

 

With the win, the Manatees salvage a game in the series and finish 3-4 on the week-long road trip.

 

The Manatees will welcome the Charlotte Stone Crabs to Space Coast Stadium for the first game of a four-game series on Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m. Sunday marks the start of a seven-game home stand for the 'Tees.

 

Lefty Jed Bradley (2-1, 3.92) will get the call for Brevard County. He will be opposed by Charlotte's Roberto Gomez (0-4, 7.04).

Chadwin Stang had been slumping lately but he broke out of it tonight in a big way, going 3 for 3 with 3 RBI and his first home run of the season. He did commit a fielding error but also recorded an outfield assist, gunning down a runner at the plate. T.J. Mittelstaedt also belted his first home run in just his second game with the Manatees. John Dishon reached base in all four of his plate appearances. He singled twice, walked and doubled. He also stole a base. Nick Ramirez, Brandon Macias and Yadiel Rivera each had a base hit. Brent Suter had another quality start, going 6.2 innings. He allowed two earned runs. Seth Harvey pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to lock down his sixth save.

ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Sounds' losing streak reached eight on Saturday evening at The Dell Diamond, where Nashville lost, 8-6, to the Round Rock Express.

 

Second baseman Scooter Gennett went 2-for-4 for the Sounds to raise his average to .366. He has reached base safely in all 23 of his games this season. First baseman Hunter Morris contributed a 2-for-3 effort and third baseman Stephen Parker extended Nashville's longest active hitting streak to seven games with a single in the defeat.

 

Express left-hander Brad Mills twirled a quality start against the Sounds and Yangervis Solarte paced a 13-hit Round Rock offensive attack with a 3-for-4 effort.

 

The Express struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning against Sounds starter Frankie De La Cruz.

 

Catcher Robinson Chirinos connected for a solo homer to left to lead off frame, the backstop's second of the year. Solarte knocked a one-out single and stole second before advancing to third on Greg Miclat's comebacker to De La Cruz. On the play, the Nashville hurler threw to third and would have had Solarte out easily but his throw was high and pulled Parker into the air to allow Solarte to slide under the tag. Jose Felix followed with a run-scoring groundout to double the Express lead to 2-0.

 

Round Rock tacked on three more runs in the fifth against De La Cruz to extend its advantage to 5-0.

 

The Sounds right-hander issued consecutive one-out walks before Jurickson Profar stole third base to put runners on the corners. After Chirinos plated Profar with a groundout to third, Aaron Cunningham lined an RBI single to left to chase De La Cruz from the contest. Donovan Hand took over on the hill for the Sounds and was greeted by a two-out Solarte run-scoring double to center that pushed the Express lead to five.

 

De La Cruz (1-4) suffered a loss for the fourth consecutive start after allowing five runs on six hits over 4 2/3 innings of work, walking four batters and striking out four.

 

After being held to only one hit through the game's first five innings, Nashville finally got onto the board against Mills in the top of the sixth. Josh Prince led off with a single to shallow left and came around to score when Gennett grounded an RBI double all the way to the wall in left-center to cut the deficit to 5-1.

 

Mills (4-0) earned the victory with his quality start for Round Rock, holding the Sounds to two runs on four hits in 6 2/3 frames.

 

Round Rock answered the Sounds' run with one of their own in unearned fashion in the bottom of the sixth. Alex Buchholz reached on a throwing error by Parker and later scored on a two-out Chris McGuiness single off Hand to make it a 6-1 contest. Parker's misfire snapped a 54-inning errorless stretch for Nashville fielders.

 

Hunter Morris scored the second Nashville run of the night in the seventh when he doubled and later crossed home on catcher Dayton Buller's two-out RBI single off Express reliever Yoshinori Tateyama.

 

The Express closed out their scoring with two runs in the seventh off reliever Johnnie Lowe, netting three straight two-out hits in the frame to stretch the lead to 8-2.

 

Caleb Gindl and Morris netted back-to-back, two-out RBI singles off reliever Nate Robertson in the top of the eighth inning to pull the Sounds back within 8-4.

 

The Sounds didn't go down without a fight in the ninth, adding two more runs without the benefit of a hit against Robertson. Gennett and Khris Davis contributed a pair of sacrifice flies in the frame.

 

Veteran reliever Tim Dillard, signed earlier in the day from the independent Atlantic League, made his first appearance of the season for the Sounds and worked a scoreless eighth inning.

 

The teams continue the series with a 1:05 p.m. matinee on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Johnny Hellweg (1-3, 3.38) will man the bump for the Sounds and face Express right-hander Ross Wolf (0-1, 1.62).

MIDLAND, MI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers are starting to make a habit of this comeback thing. For the second night in a row, the Rattlers rallied late for a come from behind victory. On Saturday at Dow Diamond, the Rattlers were down 3-0 to the Great Lakes Loons heading into the seventh inning. The Rattlers scored one in the seventh, two in the eighth, and three in the ninth for a 6-4 victory.

 

The Loons (12-16) took the lead in the bottom of the second. Wisconsin starting pitcher Austin Blaski walked James Baldwin on four straight pitches to open the inning. A passed ball let Baldwin take second. A sacrifice bunt put Baldwin on third base. Corey Seager drove in Baldwin with ground out to second.

 

Wisconsin (11-14) had a few chances early in the game against Great Lakes starter Carlos Frias. Tyrone Taylor singled and stole second with two outs in the third. Mitch Haniger and Adam Giacalone singled in the fourth inning to put runners on the corners with one out. In the fifth, Orlando Arcia singled with one out and was at second with two outs. However, Frias escaped each time without allowing a run.

 

Great Lakes had one hit in the bottom of the fifth inning, but scored a pair of runs. Blaski walked Jesmuel Valentin, the number nine batter in the Loons lineup, with one out. Valentin stole second and took third on a grounder to the right side of the infield. Jeremy Rathjen sent a grounder to short that was misplayed for an error to let Valentin score. Rathjen would steal second and score on a single by Seager for a 3-0 lead.

 

Frias pitched a scoreless sixth inning and left the game with six strikeouts along with that 3-0 lead.

 

Wisconsin chipped away with a single run in the top of the seventh against the Loons bullpen. Taylor singled with two outs to drive in Clint Coulter from second base.

 

In the eighth, the Rattlers loaded the bases with one out against Arismendy Ozoria. Haniger walked and Victor Roache was hit by a pitch. Giacalone bunted the runners into scoring position and Jose Sermo drew a walk. That walk brought Scott Griggs, the fourth Loons pitcher of the night, out of the bullpen.

 

Griggs got the second out of the inning and was ahead of Chris McFarland 1-2. But, the Wisconsin designated hitter lined the next pitch to center to drive in the runs that tied the game 3-3.

 

Rodolfo Fernandez, who relieved Blaski to start the bottom of the sixth inning, pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning to keep the game tied.

 

Griggs struggled to start the top of the ninth as he walked Taylor. One out later he walked Haniger and hit Roache to load the bases. Giacalone was not bunting in this spot. He lined a 2-2 pitch from Griggs to right-center to knock in two runs and give the Rattlers the lead.

 

New London, Wisconsin native Jake Hermsen took over for Griggs and Jose Sermo greeted him with a sacrifice fly to score Roache for a 6-3 lead.

 

Taylor Wall came on in the ninth and gave up a two-out solo home run to Pat Stover. But, that was as close as the Loons would get. Wall earned his third save of the season when he got the final out of the game to nail down Wisconsin's first three-game winning streak of the season.

 

Fernandez was rewarded for his three scoreless frames with his first professional victory.

 

The Timber Rattlers had trailed Lansing 8-2 with two outs in the eighth inning on Friday night at Cooley law School Stadium, but rallied for a 10-8 win in ten innings.

 

Game two of the series is Sunday afternoon. Ryan Gibbard (1-1, 2.04) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. The Loons have Lyndsey Caughel (0-2, 1.29) as their scheduled starter. Stars Win One, Lose Another to BayBears

On Saturday, the Stars won the conclusion of a previously suspended game by a score of 5-2 but then lost an additional seven-inning game by a score of 4-1 to the Mobile BayBears at Hank Aaron Stadium.

 

After Friday's seven-inning game was stopped in the bottom of the third inning due to rain with the Stars leading 2-1, Huntsville righty Eric Marzec started off Saturday's action on the right foot for the Stars.

 

The 25-year-old reliever was able to relieve Ariel Pena and strand two runners on base by striking out Mobile shortstop Nick Ahmed to end the BayBears potential threat.

 

However, with Stars reliever Mark Rogers in the game in the fifth inning, Mobile was able to provide the equalizer. Following a leadoff single by Ahmed and a walk by pinch-hitter Garrett Weber, center fielder Ender Inciarte advanced both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, a wild pitch from Rogers allowed Ahmed to score to tie up the game.

 

Rogers, in his fourth MLB rehab appearance with the Stars, gave up just that run on a hit in 2.0 innings of work.

 

The score remained that way until the seventh inning, where an RBI sac bunt from shortstop Hector Gomez and a two-run single from right fielder Kentrail Davis off of BayBears reliever Derek Eitel gave the Stars the lead for good. For Davis, the single gave him three runs batted in on the game, as he also added a sacrifice fly on Friday before the game was suspended.

 

On the pitching side, Stars righty Greg Holle improved to 1-1 on the season with two innings of scoreless relief to finish off the game.

 

After a thirty-minute break a ceremonial first pitch from University of Alabama quarterback A.J McCarron, the BayBears took the lead early in the second game against Stars starting pitcher Andy Moye.

 

In the bottom of the first, Mobile got back-to-back singles from Inciarte and second baseman Mike Freeman to put runners at the corners with no one out. The next at-bat, a groundout from left fielder Nick Evans scored Inciarte to make the score 1-0.

 

The only run the Stars were able to manage in the game against BayBears starting pitcher Michael Bolsinger came in the fifth inning. To leadoff the frame, back-to-back singles from third baseman Mike Walker and center fielder Rene Tosoni put runners at the corners with nobody out. Later in the inning, a wild pitch from Bolsinger allowed Walker to score to tie the game.

 

Unfortunately for the Stars, the tie was shortlived. In the bottom half of the inning, the BayBears tacked on three runs. After back-to-back singles by Weber and catcher Raywilly Gomez, an RBI sac bunt by Ahmed put the BayBears back up by one. Two batters later, a RBI single from Inciarte chased Moye from the game and made the score 3-1.

 

Then, with Stars lefty Thomas Keeling on the bump, another RBI single from BayBears second baseman Mike Freeman put Mobile up by three.

 

To finish off the game, BayBears reliever Eric Smith sent the Stars down scoreless in the final two innings for his second save of the year.

 

The Stars and BayBears will wrap up their five-game set at Hank Aaron Stadium with a series-ending doubleheader on Sunday starting at 12:05 CT. Huntsville will activate RHP Arcenio Leon (0-2, 6.35 ERA) from the D.L and start him for game one while they will send LHP Alan Williams (0-2, 1.86 ERA) to the bump for game two.
