Stars Lose Rain-Shortened Series Opener With BayBears

By Alex Cohen / Huntsville Stars

In a scheduled doubleheader due to a rainout on Thursday, the Huntsville Stars only got into the sixth inning of their first game with the Mobile BayBears on Friday. In the midst of torrential downpours, the Stars lost a 3-1 in a rain-shortened affair at Hank Aaron Stadium.

Despite the rain, the game featured a premiere starting pitching matchup that did not disappoint.

For the BayBears, righty Archie Bradley earned the win in his Double-A debut. The Diamondbacks second ranked prospect gave up just one run on four hits through six innings while striking out six batters in the process.

The only blemish on the night for the 24th overall prospect in minor league baseball was a second-inning RBI double by Stars catcher Robinzon Diaz. Right fielder Kentrail Davis, center fielder Rene Tosoni and second baseman Nick Shaw collected the only other hits for Huntsville.

Unfortunately for the Stars, righty Jimmy Nelson was tabbed with his first loss of the year. The 23-year-old righty fell to 3-1 on the season after giving up three runs and five hits over 5.1 innings of work.

After allowing the first two batters of his outing reach base via a walk and a single, Nelson gave up a pair of RBI groundouts to BayBears second baseman Mike Freeman and first baseman Jon Griffin to give Mobile a 2-0 advantage and the lead for good in the first.

Mobile center fielder Ender Inciarte hit a solo homer to leadoff the third inning against Nelson for the final run of the game.

With the loss, Nelson also gave up more than two earned runs in a ballgame for only the first time this season (six starts).

For the second day in a row, the Stars and BayBears will attempt to play a doubleheader at Hank Aaron Stadium on Friday. Huntsville will send RHP Ariel Pena (1-2, 4.84 ERA) to the bump to square off against Mobile RHP Mobile Bolsinger (0-0, 2.53 ERA). Game two will feature Stars LHP Alan Williams (0-2, 1.86 ERA) and BayBears LHP David Holmberg (0-0, 2.40 ERA). First pitch for game one is at 5:05 PM.

Final Game 2: Wisconsin 9, Lansing(Toronto) 3 (7 Innings)

Rattlers get fast start to earn split

Wisconsin jumps to 7-0 lead and cruises to 9-3 win in game two

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

LANSING, MI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored four runs in the first inning and built a 7-0 lead in game two of Thursday's doubleheader against the Lansing Lugnuts. Tyler Wagner pitched six solid innings as the starter for the Rattlers and the team picked up a doubleheader split with a 9-3 win at Jackson Field at Cooley Law School Stadium.

Wisconsin (9-14) jumped on Lansing starting pitcher Ben White with four runs in the top of the first inning. Tyrone Taylor and Michael Reed singled to start the game. Victor Roache singled with one out to drive in Taylor with the first run of the frame.

The Timber Rattlers loaded the bases on a walk to Adam Giacalone. Then, Alfredo Rodriguez popped to short right field for an infield fly out. Second baseman Christian Lopes made the catch, but then threw to third base for some reason. The throw was wild and Michael Reed scored. Roache and Giacalone also moved into scoring position on the throw. Parker Berberet drew a walk to reload the bases for Mike Garza.

Garza, who had two hits and an RBI in game one of the doubleheader, delivered a sharp single to center that knocked in two runs for a 4-0 advantage.

Giacalone made it 5-0 with an RBI double in the top of the third inning.

Mitch Haniger launched a two-run home run to left field in the top of the fourth inning. Haniger's third home run of the season put the Timber Rattlers up 7-0.

Lansing (8-16) scored a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Lopes. They added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on consecutive RBI singles by Dalton Pompey and Lopes.

The Rattlers added a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to push their lead back out to 9-3. Orlando Arcia scored on a two-out error and Haniger scored from third on a wild pitch.

Wagner finished his night with a 1-2-3 sixth inning. The right-hander out of Utah allowed three runs on six hits, walked none, and struck out six. He is now 2-1 on the season.

The final game of the three game series is Friday night. Leonard Lorenzo (1-1, 6.75) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Lansing has Javier Avendaño (2-1, 3.91) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 6:05pm CDT. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 5:45pm.

Wisconsin Game 2 Boxscore

In addition to sporting the best OPS of his career to this point Michael Reed is also 5 for 7 in SB attempts. After T-Rat pitchers walked 8 batters in Game 1 without any of those walks coming around to score, Tyler Wagner and Jonathan Armold combined to walk... ...none and strike out 9 in 7 innings. I figured Chris would cover that in his blog post as he mentioned it repeatedly between games and during game 2, but the post is not up yet and I need to head to bed.

Sounds Swept By RedHawks

Nashville Drops Series Finale, 9-1

Nashville Sounds

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Nashville Sounds could not keep pace with the Oklahoma City RedHawks Thursday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, losing the series finale by the score of 9-1. The loss gives the RedHawks the four-game series sweep; the first allowed by Nashville since the RedHawks did so nearly one year ago at the end of May.

The Sounds got on the board first when first baseman Hunter Morris scored from third on a fielder's choice, beating out the throw to home plate from RedHawks second baseman Raoul Torrez. Morris tripled into centerfield to lead-off the inning, his first three-bagger and ninth extra-base hit of the year.

The 1-0 lead, Nashville's first since a 7-1 advantage before losing in the series opener on Monday, was short-lived as the RedHawks collected three runs in bottom of the inning against Sounds starting pitcher Zach Kroenke (0-4).

The lefty put runners on the corners with no outs before Jonathan Villar hit a double to make it 2-1, Oklahoma City. Villar stole third and scored on a Kroenke balk. The Sounds never answered, charging the loss to Kroenke, who was on three days' rest and finished with four runs on six hits, three walks and two strikeouts.

The RedHawks added another run in the fifth inning with back-to-back triples into right field from Jake Elmore and Jimmy Paredes. Reliever Jesus Sanchez entered the game in between triples, but could not keep the frame clean, letting Kroenke's runner through to make it 4-1.

Sanchez stayed in to pitch 1 2/3 innings for the Sounds and let up one run off the hot bat of Villar. The RedHawks' shortstop belted one of Sanchez's pitches off the foul pole in right field for a lead-off home run in the sixth inning. Villar, who was celebrating his 22nd birthday, finished 4-for-4 with five RBIs and a triple shy of the cycle.

The RedHawks' biggest inning came in the seventh, putting up four runs on Sounds reliever Johnnie Lowe. Villar and Carlos Perez each produced two-run singles with the bases loaded. Lowe allowed three hits and three walks in the inning.

Chris Jakubauskas and Rob Wooten combined to pitch a scoreless eighth, but Jakubauskas left the game after one strikeout due to leg discomfort on the mound.

After spending the first part of the season with the parent club Milwaukee Brewers, outfielder Khris Davis made his return to Nashville, going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts on the night. Davis hit .310 (35-for-113) for the Sounds in 2012.

The Sounds loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth on two hits and a walk, but failed to plate any runs as Davis hit into a fielder's choice to put the runner out at home and Morris grounded into a double play.

The Sounds begin a new four-game series on Friday night, heading to Texas to face the Round Rock Express. RHP Mike Fiers (0-1, 0.82) gets the start for Nashville, opposite lefty Brad Mills (3-0, 2.81). Baseball returns to Greer Stadium on Tuesday, May 7, as the Sounds host the Fresno Grizzlies (AAA-Giants).

Nashville Box

Caleb Gindl kept up his hot-hitting ways, & led the Sounds with two hits.

Gindl: 2-4, 2B

Morris: 1-4, 3B

Stephen Parker: 1-4, 2B, RBI

I'm completely bushed tonight, so I'm going to cut this part short. Not really anything you want to see in the pitching lines anyway, unfortunately.

Nashville PbP

Nashville loaded the bases with no one out in the 5th, but couldn't muster a single run. At the time, they only trailed 3-1... and sadly the game spun out of control afterwards:

Final: Brevard County 2 Dunedin 8

Brevard drops series opener at Dunedin

'Tees muster just four hits in 8-2 loss to first place Jays

By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees

DUNEDIN, Fla. - K.C. Hobson launched two home runs to lead the Dunedin Blue Jays to an 8-2 victory over the Brevard County Manatees on Thursday night at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium in Dunedin.

The Manatees (14-13) took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Yadiel Rivera led off the inning by reaching on a two-base throwing error by Peter Mooney. Lance Roenicke then reached on an infield single. John Dishon then lifted a fly ball to right field that easily scored Rivera.

The Blue Jays (16-10) responded with a three-run bottom of the third. Jon Berti hit a two-run single to give Dunedin the lead. Berti went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI on the night. He extended his hit streak to 14 games, which is tops in the Florida State League this season. Later in the inning, starting pitcher Brooks Hall unleashed a wild pitch that scored Berti.

The 'Tees would cut the lead to one in the fourth inning, on an RBI single by Brandon Macias that scored Nick Ramirez. K.C. Hobson and the Dunedin offense took over from that point on.

With the Blue Jays still holding a slim 3-2 lead in the sixth inning, Hobson launched a two-run blast to right field off of Hall. The mammoth home run seemed to tilt the momentum in the Blue Jays favor.

The sixth inning was also the last for Hall (2-2, 2.62). He allowed a season-high five runs on seven hits. He walked one and struck out five.

Dunedin extended the lead with two more runs in the seventh off of Andre Lamontagne before Hobson tattooed another homer to right field in the eighth off of Matt Miller.

The Manatees were outhit by the Blue Jays, 11-4. Ramirez, Garfield, Macias, Roenicke had Brevard County's four hits. The 'Tees combine to strikeout 12 times at the plate on the night.

The Manatees and Blue Jays will meet again on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. David Goforth (1-3, 2.74) will toe the rubber for Brevard County and Scott Copeland (1-0, 2.53) will get the call for Dunedin.

The Manatees Radio Network will air the game on ManateesBaseball.com with coverage starting at 6:00 p.m.

Brevard County Box Score

It's been a season long trend, but the Manatees struck out 12 times again tonight while only walking once. Chadwin Stang K'd four times out of the leadoff spot. Nick Ramirez doubled for BC's lone extra base hit. Cameron Garfield, Brandon Macias and Lance Roenicke had the other three hits. Roenicke got caught stealing again. He's now just 1 for 6 on stolen base attempts. Brooks Hall had his first sub par outing but still managed to go six innings.

Brevard Game Audio Highlights / Lowlights

***

Well, here's your office audio for the afternoon and beyond. As they promised, Brevard's Dave and Andy have now posted their audio pre-game interviews from thus far in 2013, and we should see them post consistently now. There are 15 online now, note the date on each to get perspective as to when they were conducted.

We've said it before, but fans are going to learn more from little snippets within these interviews than they do from most newspaper article features. We're lucky that Nashville, Helena and now Brevard post these online for us. Great job, guys.
