South Bend sweeps Wisconsin with 12-3 decision

Silver Hawks collect 17 hits on the way to three-game series sweep

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Brandon Drury went 5-for-6 to lead the South Bend Silver Hawks to a 12-3 rout of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Tuesday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The 17-hit attack gave South Bend a win and their first ever sweep at Wisconsin.

 

South Bend (16-6) scored first for the third straight game in the series. Socrates Brito scored from third on a wild pitch.

 

The Silver Hawks added to their lead in the top of the fourth. Fidel Pena singled to drive in two runs for a 3-0 advantage.

 

Wisconsin (5-13) had South Bend starter Jesse Darrah on the ropes in the bottom of the fifth inning. Adam Giacalone singled and Orlando Arcia walked to start the inning and the top of the order was due to hit. Tyrone Taylor bunted the runners over to scoring position for Michael Reed, who had extended his hitting streak to seven games with a first inning double. Reed sent a smash down the third base line that looked like a two-run double. However, Drury made a diving back-handed stab and clean stop of the ball. Then, Drury threw home to get Giacalone for the second out. Darrah got a strikeout - his sixth of the game - to end the Rattlers threat.

 

Wisconsin reliever Eric Semmelhack was not as lucky as Darrah. In the top of the sixth, the leadoff batter reached on an error. Semmelhack would get a grounder, but the Rattlers defense could only get the lead runner and were unable to turn the double play. Drury was next and he had two consecutive wind-blown pop-ups drop in foul territory behind Wisconsin defenders. Drury made the Rattlers pay with an RBI double. He would score later in the inning on a single by Brito for a 5-0 South Bend lead.

 

Darrah pitched six shutout innings and struck out eight while walking four, hitting one, and allowing three hits for the Silver Hawks. The Rattlers staged a rally once Darrah left the game.

 

It was the bottom of the order that got the Rattlers going again in the bottom of the seventh. Both Giacalone and Arcia were hit by Will Locante to start the inning. Taylor singled to center to drive in Giacalone and an errant throw to third allowed Arcia to score and Taylor to take third base. An error on a grounder off the bat of Reed allowed Taylor to score and Wisconsin was within 5-3. But, they could not push another run across the plate.

 

Meanwhile, South Bend pushed a lot more runs over the plate. Drury homered over the batter's eye in center with two outs in the top of the eighth inning to make it 6-3. Then, the Silver Hawks sent eleven men to the plate in the top of the ninth. The scored six runs on two walks, five hits, and another Wisconsin error. The outburst in the eighth put the Hawks up by the final score of 12-3.

 

Taylor was the only Timber Rattlers batter to have a multi-hit game as he had two.

 

The Timber Rattlers are off on Wednesday. They begin a six-game road trip with a doubleheader on Thursday at Lansing. Game time for the first game of the twinbill is 4:05pm CDT.

I listened to the game through the top of the 4th before I had to dig back in at work as I was lamenting this audit which is coming next week and I'm preparing for. I really wanted to take a personal day and head to ballpark for the first beautiful spring day, it eventually topped out at 84 up here in NE WI, but there's just no way I could get away from work this week. Little did I know that things would turn very ugly and I'd be thankful I wasn't able to get out to TWC Field in the end.

 

Orlando Arcia committed 2 errors in the game and Adam Giacalone had the other. The team mustered just 6 hits, played shoddy defense, and pitched poorly... this is just one of those games you forget about and move on.

Brevard County 4 Bradenton 4 (Suspended after 6 Innings)

 

Tuesday's game at Bradenton suspended due to rain

 

BRADENTON, Fla. - The scheduled game on Tuesday, April 30 between the Brevard County Manatees and Bradenton Marauders at McKechnie Field in Bradenton has been suspended due to rain.

 

Play was suspended after six innings of play with the score tied 4-4. The Manatees scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game.

 

After 40 minutes of heavy rain, the decision was made to suspend the game and continue play at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 1.

 

The regularly scheduled game for Wednesday will be played 30 minutes after the suspended game is completed. The second game will be a nine-inning contest.

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Nashville Sounds never recovered from the Oklahoma City RedHawks' three-run second inning Tuesday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, losing their sixth consecutive road game by the score of 4-2.

 

The RedHawks big inning came against Sounds starting pitcher Johnny Hellweg (1-3), though only the first run he allowed, a Marc Krauss lead-off home run to left field, was earned. The homer was Krauss' sixth and the first surrendered by Hellweg this season.

 

The RedHawks' following two runs came after a passed ball from catcher Anderson De La Rosa put two runners in scoring position with one out. Brett Wallace, who reached base on balls, crossed home plate on a groundout, while Jonathan Villar stole home to make it 3-0.

 

Villar's steal of home is the first scored against Nashville since Las Vegas' Manny Mayorson did so on August 15, 2011 at Greer Stadium.

 

Hellweg ran into a jam in his final frame when a pair of lead-off hits put runners on the corners, but the 24-year-old displayed poise by striking out the side to end the inning, unfortunately not before De La Rosa's third passed ball allowed the runner from third to score.

 

Reliever Donovan Hand entered in the seventh inning to take over for Hellweg, who threw 101 pitches en route to his first quality start of the year, allowing four runs, one earned, on four hits. The 6-foot-9 hurler fanned seven, which ties Tyler Thornburg's Opening Day outing for the most by a Sounds' starter this season, and walked four. Hellweg took the tough-luck loss.

 

Hand and Michael Olmsted each pitched one scoreless inning out of the 'pen, allowing one hit apiece. The two combined to strikeout three and walked none.

 

Sounds' hitters did not find a hit against RedHawks winning pitcher Jarred Cosart (3-0) until the fifth inning, as outfielder Caleb Gindl connected for a double to the left-field corner. Gindl also recorded the Sounds final hit of the game, a solo home run in the ninth inning off Josh Zeid.

 

The team plated their first run in the sixth inning via Hunter Morris' single into centerfield. The hit scored infielder Scooter Gennett from second, after legging out an infield hit and stealing second.

 

Gennett's hit extends his hit streak to 11 games, in which he is hitting .403 (20-for-45). He has reached base safely in each of his first 19 games and has a hit in 18 of them.

 

The Sounds finish the opening month of baseball 7-16, collectively hitting .234, while Nashville pitchers hold a 4.36 ERA.

 

The Sounds look to snap their losing skid in game three against the Oklahoma City RedHawks on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Manning the bump for Nashville will be RHP Tyler Thornburg (0-2, 5.04) against the 'Hawks LHP Dallas Keuchel (1-0, 0.00). Baseball returns to Greer Stadium on Tuesday, May 7, as the Sounds host the Fresno Grizzlies (AAA-Giants).
