Brewers looking for Kotsay type

Not a surprise.....no need for Davis to sit on the bench and not play.

Brewers would love to add a veteran hitter who can play the corner infield and outfield spots -- similar to what they had in Mark Kotsay

In all seriousness, what did Kotsay ever do for us that we feel the need to replace?

If we need an established vet to play those positions, I would hope we would set our sights on someone a little better than Kotsay.

I think they want somebody who can play the outfield. I think the point is Davis doesn't have a role with this team.....find somebody who can pinch hit, play first and the outfield.....hopefully he is better then Kotsay....Carlos Lee would have been good but apparently he isn't interested in playing.

The report isn't saying they want Mark Kotsay. They supposedly want someone who can play the positions & fill the roles Kotsay did in 2011. I don't know who they'd be after, but I see the logic in terms of wanting that type of player.

Yuni B & Gonzalez aren't OF/corner IF types. They're middle IFs who are having to spend more time playing at the corners right now.

The perfect "Kotsay type" is Kotsay himself isn't it? I know he likes playing at home in SD, but they are going nowhere. The guys the Brewers have used sparingly, Schafer, Lalli, Davis, and Prince are a combined 9 for 58. It's tough to produce when you are not getting AB's. Kotsay's numbers given his limited ABs are why he is still playing.

The other names that come to mind like Brad Hawpe or an Ishikawa, aren't doing much at AAA these days.

Looking at http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/transactions/free-agents, the following seem like Kotsay-esque-role-fillers, albeit I'm not sure who is willing/able to play this year at this point:

  • Grady Sizemore (trying to comeback after the break and may never be the guy he used to be, but I'd still take a chance on him in a backup/filler role)
  • Andruw Jones
  • Carlos Lee
  • Bobby Abreu (although his notes say he's taking '13 off)
  • Johnny Damon

I was a big Sizmore fan. It's too bad he couldn't stay healthy. I'd maybe sign him to a minor-league deal but I really don't think he's got much left after only playing in 104 games in 2010/2011 combined and sitting out all last year. Andruw Jones might still have some power but his average is horrendous. As for the rest, no thanks.

This is Jack Burton in the Pork Chop Express, and I'm talkin' to whoever's listenin' out there.

I think the criteria for a Kotsay type is lefthanded hitter with experience producing in a limited role. All those guys are either righthanded and were primarily starters their entire careers.

A guy who would fit other than Kotsay would be Greg Dobbs, but he's starting in Miami so he might cost a big more to acquire.
