On the other hand he has flipped some hangers up there already and his mechanics and control need a ton of work, he's all over the place. He's gotten away grooving a couple when he was behind in the count, and the HR he gave up to the first batter of the game was a no doubter.

 

However the arm is there and with consistency that curve could be special.

Well that's good to hear. Lopez has always been a very raw project of a draft pick... nice to see flashes of the upside.

Apparently the Sounds haven't been scuffling at the plate the past few games, they've just been storing up offensive firepower. 7 runs on 7 hits in the first two innings!

 

Jeff Bianchi has a 3B & 3 RBI, while Scooter Gennett & Stephen Parker each have a 2B & 2 RBI. Gennett has also extended his Sounds-best hitting streak to 10 games.

Final: Mississippi 4 Huntsville1 (Game One)

 

The Mississippi Braves won game one, and the series, with a 4-1 win. Stars starter Andy Moye took the loss. Moye worked 5 innings allowing 3 earned runs on 5 hits and 4 walks. Of the 85 pitches Moye threw, only 48 were for strikes. The 4 walks allowed tied a season high for Moye. Moye has started 5 games so far, two games he walked 4, two games he walked 1 and one game he had no walks. So the walks are a bit unusual for him.

 

Brewers starter Mark Rogers made another rehab appearance tonight. He went 1 2/3 innings, allowing a run on a no-doubt-about-it shot. This was the only hit he allowed but he did walk 3 and struck out 1. Rogers threw 33 pitches, 14 for strikes. Per Alex Cohen, Rogers was consistantly 88-91 and topped out at 93, so his top end was up from last outing, but the range is pretty much the same. He sounded like he was leaving his pitches up, per the broadcast.

The Stars were held to 1 run on 5 hits in game one tonight. Catcher Adam Weisenburger had 2 hits and drove in the lone run. Weisenburger also had the only extra base hit with a double in the 7th. 2nd baseman Nick Shaw reached base twice with a single and a walk. Brock Kjeldgaard and Mike Walker had the other 2 hits.

 

Team RISP: 1-for-9.

Team LOB: 6.

 

It sounds like a broken record because it's been an issue all season. Stars broadcaster Alex Cohen mentioned the Stars lead the leage in runners left on base. As a team, the Stars are at the bottom half of the Souther League in most offensive catagories. The only catagories they are in the upper half are walks drawn and OBP.

 

On a positive note, the Stars did play another game error-free

Final: Mississippi 5 Huntsville 0 (Game 2)

 

Mississippi swept the double header by taking the nightcap 5-0 in 8 innings. Stars lefty starter Alan Williams pitched great. In his second career start, Williams went a season high 5 innings. He gave up only 4 hits, no walks and struck out 4 as he kept the hot hitting Braves off the scoreboard. Williams was consistently in the 88-91 MPH range, per Alex Cohen on the Stars broadcast. Williams threw 67 pitches, 40 for strikes. Reliever Greg Holle had a nice bounce back game, pitching 2 scoreless innings, giving up only 1 hit. Unfortunately, the Braves were able to break through in the 8th against closer Casey Medlen. Medlen (1-2) took the loss as he gave up 5 earned runs on 6 hits and a hit batter.

 

The loss leaves the Stars record 9-16 including a 3-12 record at The Joe. Remember, the Stars starter the season 5-1. That's a 4-15 record since. Ouch.

Huntsville was held to 5 hits, drew no walks, and struck out 13 times while being shut out for the 2nd time in 3 games. The other game, they scored 1 run. Shea Vucinich, Kentrail Davis, and Jason Rogers each had a double and Nick Shaw and Mike Walker both singled.

'Tees offense rebounds against Marauders

Suter victorious in FSL debut in 6-1 win over Bradenton

BRADENTON, Fla. - One night after striking out a season-high 14 times, the Brevard County Manatees pounded out 11 hits en route to a 6-1 victory over the Bradenton Marauders at McKechnie Field on Monday night.

 

Making his Manatees (13-11) debut, starting pitcher Brent Suter (1-0, 1.50) benefitted from Brevard's offensive outburst. The 2012 draft pick out of Harvard held his own in his first FSL start as he went six innings and allowed just one run on three hits. Suter walked two and struck out four.

 

Bradenton's (8-16) only run came in the second and got the scoring started as Dan Gamache singled to center to score Jose Osuna from second.

 

Brevard County would take the lead in the top of the third and did not look back as the Manatees scored four in the frame.

 

John Dishon led the inning off with a bunt single and then Chadwin Stang drew a walk. Gregory Hopkins would drive both of them in with a two-run double to right to give the 'Tees a 2-1 lead.

 

Nick Ramirez followed Hopkins with a RBI single to make it 3-1 and then three batters later Ramirez would come around to score on a Brandon Macias RBI single.

 

The Manatees padded their lead in the fourth and fifth as Hopkins brought Dishon home on a single to center in the fourth and then Cody Hawn led off the fifth with his third homer of the season.

 

Hawn went 3-for-5 on the night, while Stang, Hopkins and Dishon had two hits each. Hopkins drove in a game-high three runs.

 

Daniel Meadows made his season debut in the seventh out of the bullpen and the lefty threw one scoreless inning. Chad Pierce finished out the night as he threw two perfect innings with three strikeouts.

 

Brevard County and Bradenton will continue their four-game series on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. Southpaw Jed Bradley (2-1, 1.59) will take the mound for the 'Tees and square off with Bradenton's Adrian Sampson (0-0, 4.86)

Cody Hawn had a big night, going 3-5 with a double and his third home run. Greg Hopkins had a single and a double, walked once and stole his third base of the year. Chadwin Stang singled twice and walked once. John Dishon had a pair of base hits. Brandon Macias was on base three times with a single, a walk and a hit by pitch. He was caught stealing. Nick Ramirez had an RBI single and a walk.

 

Brent Suter pitched well in his first start for the Manatees. He went six innings and gave up just one run on three hits. Daniel Meadows made his season debut and pitched a scoreless seventh. Chad Pierce worked two clean innings, striking out three.

Sounds Suffer Tough Loss To Open Road Trip

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Sounds squandered an early six-run lead as Oklahoma City RedHawks plated eight unanswered runs en route to a 9-8 victory over the Sounds on Monday evening at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in the opener of a four-game series.

 

The game featured 17 runs and 27 hits, including 13 extra-base knocks, in the contest. The teams had combined for only 13 total runs in their three-game series in Nashville in early April.

 

Every Sounds starter recorded a hit in the game, led by rehabbing infielder Jeff Bianchi's 3-for-5 effort.

 

After scoring only five runs in their previous three games and 23 innings of action, Nashville exploded for seven runs in the first two innings against RedHawks right-hander Ross Seaton. However, the offense would slow down from there, netting only one run over the final seven frames as the Sounds left nine runners on base and grounded into four double plays while Oklahoma City rallied to earn the win.

 

The Sounds got off to a quick start, jumping on Seaton for a pair of first-inning runs and an early 2-0 lead.

 

Scooter Gennett (2-for-5) opened the game by extending his hitting streak to 10 games with a double to right and scored the night's first run when Bianchi followed with an RBI single to left-center. After Hunter Morris flew out, Stephen Parker -- batting in the cleanup spot for the first time this season -- doubled the Nashville lead by lacing a run-scoring double into the right field corner.

 

Gennett is batting .411 on the year while Bianchi raised his average to .294 in his eight rehab games with Nashville.

 

Oklahoma City got a run back in the home half of the frame, halving the Sounds' lead to 2-1. A leadoff walk issued by Frankie De La Cruz came back to haunt the Nashville right-hander as Trevor Crowe eventually scored on Brett Wallace's two-out RBI single in the frame.

 

Nashville continued its offensive surge in the second, batting around for the first time all season and plating five more runs to extend the advantage to 7-1.

 

After a Cole Garner double and a pair of walks loaded the bases to start the frame, Gennett smashed a sharply-hit ball to first that caromed off the glove of Wallace into right field for a two-run single. Bianchi followed with his second RBI knock of the day, driving a two-run triple off the top of the center field wall to up the Nashville lead to 6-1. After Morris lined out, Parker followed with an RBI single to right to drive in the frame's fifth run.

 

The RedHawks fought back in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs off De La Cruz to cut the Sounds' lead to 7-4. Former Sound Jason Jaramillo got one back by driving a one-out RBI double off the right field wall before scoring on Crowe's second longball of the year, a two-run shot to right.

 

Following Seaton's departure for Oklahoma City, left-hander Kyle Hallock (1-0) took over on the hill and stifled the Sounds' offense. The southpaw picked up his first victory of the year by tossing 4 1/3 scoreless innings, limiting Nashville to two hits over that span.

 

Oklahoma City rallied to take its first lead of the evening by posting a four-spot against De La Cruz in the bottom of the fourth. Jake Elmore (3-for-3) blasted a two-run homer into the bullpen beyond the wall in left-center to get things started before back-to-back triples by Jimmy Paredes and Marc Krauss knotted the contest at 7-7. Two batters later, Jonathan Villar (3-for-4) dropped a bloop single just beyond the outstretched glove of Gennett in shallow center field to plate Krauss and put the RedHawks on top, 8-7.

 

De La Cruz (1-3) drew a loss for the third straight start after surrendering eight runs on 10 hits in his 3 2/3 innings. Entering the contest, the veteran had permitted only 10 hits in 15.0 IP in his previous four outings.

 

The RedHawks added to their lead when Elmore struck again, this time with an RBI triple to right off Chris Jakubauskas that plated Crowe for his fourth run scored of the night.

 

Nashville recorded three hits in the top of the seventh but also grounded into its fourth double play of the night and stranded a pair against left-hander Eric Berger in a scoreless frame.

 

Kyle Heckathorn worked around a pair of runners in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh to work a scoreless frame and keep the Sounds at a two-run deficit.

 

The Sounds got back on the scoreboard in the top of the eighth, rallying for a run against Berger to stop Oklahoma City's string of eight unanswered runs, but missed a golden opportunity to do even more damage as they wasted a no-out, bases-loaded situation.

 

Blake Davis led off with a double to left and Dayton Buller followed with a chopper through the right side for an RBI single that drew Nashville within a single score at 9-8. Gennett reached when Crowe dropped his fly ball in left field and the Sounds loaded the bases with no outs when Bianchi hit a chopper to third on which Rauol Torrez made a bad throw to second on the attempted force out.

 

Jose Valdez took over on the hill for Oklahoma City and escaped the inherited bases-loaded jam, fanning Morris and Parker for the first two outs before retiring Sean Halton on an inning-ending groundout.

 

Valdez closed out the game by retiring Nashville in order in the ninth to earn his league-leading seventh save of the year.

 

The teams continue the series with another 7:05 meeting on Tuesday evening. Right-hander Johnny Hellweg (1-2, 4.00) will make the start for the Sounds and face RedHawks right-hander Jarred Cosart (2-0, 2.86).
