There's always inspiration to be found. Just look at the Brewers mound opponent yesterday, RHP Matt Magill was a 31st round pick in 2008. Magill, however, was a high school pick. Darn, that's impressive, you normally don't see many high school signees in rounds that late, never mind ones that go on to success. For instance, the Brewers still have 20-year-old RHP Michael Schaub, another California high schooler, in the system (38th round, 2010).

Man the Pirates are getting a ton of run as an organization, right up there with the Twins and the Cards, just about every day they have someone written about. We've known for a while how good the Pirates system is but with Taillon and Cole ascending plus the re-emergence of Allie as a legitimate bat... cripes. That's in addition to the break out prospects from last year like Polanco... well, it's a tad disheartening. The story is worth reading and includes video.

Hawks homer late to stop Wisconsin

Court and Glenn go back-to-back in ninth to snap 3-3 tie

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Ryan Court and Alex Glenn hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the ninth inning to provide the South Bend Silver Hawks with the winning margins in a 6-3 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Sunday at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

 

South Bend (14-6) scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning. Kevin Medrano reached on an error to start the frame and a balk on Wisconsin starter Austin Blaski moved Medrano into scoring position. Brandon Drury knocked in Medrano with a one out single for a 1-0 lead.

 

Tyrone Taylor tied the game on the second pitch of the bottom of the first inning. The Rattlers centerfielder lined an 0-1 offering over the wall in left field for a leadoff homer to tie the game. Michael Reed was next. Reed singled, went to second on a passed ball, and took third on a ground out. Victor Roache gave Wisconsin (8-11) the lead with a sacrifice fly to left that drove in Reed.

 

The Silver Hawks had runners on first and third with no outs in the top of the third inning. Medrano grounded into a 6-4-3 double play, but the run from third scored to tie the game 2-2.

 

South Bend took the lead on a run off reliever Taylor Mangum in the top of the fifth inning. The Hawks had runners on first and second with no outs. Clint Coulter tried to pick the runner off second base Pedro Ruiz took a pitch for a ball, but the throw sailed into center and allowed both runners to advance. Mangum got the first out of the inning without a run scoring, but Medrano's fly ball to center was deep enough to score the runner from third and put the Hawks in front 3-2.

 

Wisconsin had trouble against South Bend starter Brandon Sinnery after the first inning. Sinnery gave up four hits and did not allow a Rattlers runner past second base in his final six innings of work. In all, Sinnery left the game after seven innings with the 3-2 lead after striking out three and walking none.

 

The Rattlers rallied in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Enrique Burgos. Mitch Haniger singled - his third of hit of the game - with one out to start the rally. Victor Roache followed with a single and Adam Giacalone walked to load the bases with one out. Clint Coulter blooped a single to center to score Haniger. Roache was sent home after a slight bobble by Breland Almadova in the outfield, but he was out on a strong throw to the plate.

 

Rodolfo Fernandez took over on the hill in the top of the ninth inning and allowed a leadoff single to Drury. Then, Court cracked a home run to left-center to make it 5-3 in favor of the Silver Hawks. Glenn followed with a home run to deep right field and South Bend was up 6-3.

 

RJ Hively pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his fifth save of the year.

 

Game two of the series with the Silver Hawks is Monday night on a Qdoba Q*Monday. Purchase a lunch entrée at either Appleton Qdoba location Monday and receive a free ticket good for any Monday home game during the 2013 season.

 

The Timber Rattlers have Ryan Gibbard (1-0, 1.15) as their scheduled starting pitcher. The Silver Hawks will send Cody Wheeler (1-0, 1.15) to the mound. Game time is 6:35pm.

I'll say this for our young T-Rats, their games are rarely boring. Mitch Hainger's 3 hits today bumped his BA up to .309 on the season. He's walked more than he has struck out 8/7 so he's sporting a robust .388 OBP and he is slugging an even .500 to put his OPS at .888, not too shabby. Tyrone Taylor almost made another great catch in CF coming up just short to trap the ball, instead we'll have to settle for his laser beam HR (which wasn't in the highlights for some reason). Alfredo Rodriguez started in place of slumping Orlando Arcia today and made some nice defensive plays, the Rattlers turned 3 DPs total during the contest.

 

Michael Reed's 2 hits jumped his average up to .298, he's been a slow and steady climb upwards for some time now hitting .314 over his last 10. His full slash line at this moment is .349/.421/.770 which if he can sustain it will be big improvement over his first 2 seasons.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Memphis left-hander John Gast continued his early-season dominance of PCL hitters, hurling five scoreless innings, and Oscar Taveras belted a homer to lead the Redbirds to a 1-0 victory over the Nashville Sounds in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Greer Stadium.

 

With the outing, Gast (3-0) extended his PCL-best season-opening scoreless streak to 29 2/3 innings. The southpaw, who fanned seven and allowed only two hits in his five innings, earned his third victory in five starts for Memphis.

 

Victor Marte worked the final two innings in scoreless fashion for Memphis to nail down his fifth save of the year. The loss was Nashville's third shutout defeat of the young season.

 

Mike Fiers (0-1) took a complete-game loss for the Sounds after working all seven innings. He allowed one run on six hits, walked three batters, and struck out three in his 84-pitch effort.

 

Taveras put the visitors on the board in the top of the third inning with a two-out solo homer to right-center off Fiers. The blast was the outfielder's second big fly of the year.

 

Fiers kept it a one-run deficit in the fourth when he worked into and out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam, getting Gast to pop up to left and escaping the frame unscathed by inducing an inning-ending grounder from Adron Chambers.

 

The Sounds' best opportunity to get on the scoreboard came in the fourth after Sean Halton opened the inning with a double and was at third with one out. Cole Garner struck out and Stephen Parker grounded out against Gast to end the frame. Halton's two-bagger was the outfielder's fourth double in his last five plate appearances, dating back to Friday evening.

 

Nashville threatened again in the ninth. Caleb Gindl led off with a single against Marte to extend his longest hitting streak of the year to six games and advanced to second on a one-out wild pitch. The Redbirds' closer recovered to strike out Parker then broke Anderson De La Rosa's bat on a game-ending popup to short.

 

Rehabbing infielder Jeff Bianchi went 1-for-3 in the opener and is hitting .241 (7-for-29) in his seven contests with the Sounds.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds dropped two games in Sunday afternoon's twin billing at Greer Stadium, allowing the Memphis Redbirds to tie the four-game series 2-2, losing 1-0 in the opener and 2-1 in the nightcap.

 

After 13 innings without a run, Nashville finally pushed one across the plate in the seventh inning of game two, when Redbirds pitcher Eric Fornataro balked with Joey Paciorek on third, who was pinch running for catcher Dayton Buller.

 

The run made it 2-1 and was the second-consecutive Sounds run scored on a balk from a Memphis pitcher, stretching back to Friday night's balk-off win.

 

The Redbirds scored first in the third inning, when right fielder Justin Christian slapped a single into left field to score Travis Tartamella from second, who reach base on a catcher's interference call charged to Buller.

 

The run was unearned, keeping starter Zach Kroenke's (0-3) line clean through four innings of work, but pinned the lefty with his third loss of the season. Kroenke limited Memphis to three hits, fanning three and walking one before reliever Johnnie Lowe entered the game in the fifth.

 

Lowe and Travis Webb each worked one scoreless frame for Nashville, before Jesus Sanchez allowed Memphis' final run: a solo jack off the guitar scoreboard by Chad Huffman. The homer was the first earned run of the season allowed by Sanchez, after starting the year with 10 scoreless innings over seven appearances.

 

Second baseman Scooter Gennett went two-for-four in the nightcap, extending his hitting streak to nine games, the most by a Sound this season, with a broken-bat single into centerfield and an infield hit in seventh.

 

Getting the win for Memphis was reliever Sam Freeman (1-0), who worked two scoreless innings, before Fornataro picked up his first save.

 

The Sounds embark on an eight-game road trip on Monday that includes four-game stops in Oklahoma City (AAA-Astros) and Round Rock (AAA-Rangers). Right-hander Frankie De La Cruz (1-2, 4.20) will man the bump in Monday's 7:05 p.m. series opener in Oklahoma City. The RedHawks will counter with right-hander Ross Seaton (0-1, 8.03). Baseball returns to Greer Stadium on Tuesday, May 7, as the Sounds host the Fresno Grizzlies (AAA-Giants).

Bradenton, Fla. - Nick Kingham (W, 2-2) set a new Marauders' franchise record by striking out 13 Brevard County Manatees in a 4-1 Marauders win. Kingham accomplished the feat in six scoreless innings, yielding only three singles, and no walks.

 

Kingham started the game with three swinging strikeouts in the first inning. He surrendered back-to-back singles in the second inning, but with two on and nobody out he got a fly out from Yadiel Rivera, then struck out two more Manatees. He proceeded to strike out two batters in each inning before being lifted after six. Of the 13 strikeouts, 10 were swinging and three were looking.

 

The previous record was held by Matt McSwain, who struck out 11 Jupiter Hammerheads over six innings on April 18, 2011. The record 12th strikeout for Kingham came on a controversial check-swing foul tip call on Brevard County leadoff man Brandon Macias for the first out of the sixth inning. Macias checked his swing, but after the umpires conferenced they ruled that the ball had contacted the bat and been caught by Jacob Stallings. After a fly out by Greg Hopkins, Nick Ramirez went down swinging for the 13th strikeout.

 

David Goforth (L, 1-3) matched zeroes with Kingham until the fifth. Willy Garcia singled in the infield to lead off the inning and moved to second on a throwing error on the play. Taylor Lewis singled home Garcia. It was the first time the Marauders had scored the first run at home in 12 tries this season.

 

Carlos Mesa added an RBI-double off Andre LaMontagne in the seventh to stretch the lead to 2-0. Jose Osuna and Garcia each drove in a run in the eighth to stretch the lead to 4-0.

 

The Manatees scored and put the tying runs on against Zac Fuesser in the ninth, but Emmanuel De Leon induced a game ending 6-4-3 double play from Chadwin Stang to end the game.

 

Game two of the series is Monday night at 6:30 p.m. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Matt Benedict will start for the Marauders against Brent Suter for Brevard County.

Brevard hitters struck out 14 times in this one, while walking just twice. Brandon Macias and Nick Ramirez each fanned three times. As a team the Manatees have whiffed 207 times through the first 23 games. That far and away leads the Florida State League. Cameron Garfield was on base three times. He singled twice and drew a walk. Cody Hawn was 2-4 with a double. Greg Hopkins, Chadwin Stang and John Dishon had the other BC hits. Stang stole his eighth base and Dishon recorded another outfield assist. Garfield, Dionis Hinojosa and Yadiel Rivera each committed an error. Rivera had 22 errors in 126 games last year. This year he already has 10 through the first 23 games.

 

David Goforth deserved a better fate. He gave up just one unearned run in six innings of work. He struck out four. Andre Lamontagne allowed one run in an inning of work, and Matt Miller surrendered two runs, one earned, on four hits in his inning.

Brevard's bats baffled by Bradenton

'Tees strike out 14 times in 4-1 loss to Marauders

BRADENTON, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees dropped its first game of inter-division play in 2013 as they were defeated 4-1, by the Bradenton Marauders on Sunday evening at McKechnie Field in Bradenton.

 

The 'Tees (12-11) were held in check offensively by Bradenton (8-15) starting pitcher Nick Kingham. Kingham threw six shutout innings and allowed just three hits, while setting a new single-game Marauders' record with 13 strikeouts.

 

The Marauders got on the board first in the fifth inning. Willy Garcia led off the frame by reaching on an infield single and then advancing to second on a throwing error by shortstop Yadiel Rivera.

 

Two batters later, Taylor Lewis singled to right to plate Garcia and Garcia advanced to third on a fielding error by right fielder Dionis Hinojosa.

 

Manatees starting pitcher David Goforth (1-3, 2.74) was able to get out of the jam as Lewis was retired at third on a fielder's choice and then Alex Hanson popped out to Cameron Garfield to end the inning.

 

Goforth went six innings and allowed just the one unearned run on four hits and two walks. In the last five games, Manatees' starting pitchers have allowed just one earned run in 28 innings of work.

 

Bradenton padded its lead against Brevard's bullpen as a two-out double by Carlos Mesa off of Andre Lamontagne in the seventh made it a 2-0 game. The Marauders scored two more off of Matt Miller in the eighth on four hits.

 

From the first to the eighth inning, the Manatees had just three runners get past first base. Brevard County scored its only run in the top of the ninth on a RBI double from Cody Hawn.

 

Hawn along with Garfield had two hits each in the loss for the 'Tees. Garfield is hitting .368 (7-for-19) in his last five games.

 

Brevard County and Bradenton will be back in action at McKechnie Field on Monday night beginning at 6:30 p.m.

 

Southpaw Brent Suter (0-1, 1.80 with Class-A Wisconsin) will be getting the start in his debut for the Manatees. The Marauders will send Matt Benedict (0-3, 3.66) to the mound.

I realize this is MLB news now, but I thought it was worth pointing out that CIN's Tony Cingrani has continued to shine. His latest start yesterday, at WAS: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 11 K. He even picked up his first hit, a 2nd inning single.

 

His previous start came on the 23rd at home against the Cubs: 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R/ER, 0 BB, 9 K. Another outstanding performance that was only outdone by former Brewer Carlos Villanueva's 8.1 IP gem, and also-former-Brewer Manny Parra allowing a pair of runs (1 ER) in the 10th to give the Cubs their winning margin.

 

Counting along on the Reds' calendar, it looks like Cingrani's next start will come on Friday, May 3rd. That's a 1:20 CT start time, so for anyone with free time + mlb.tv and/or Extra Innings... might be worthwhile to check him out firsthand. It looks like the Brewers will miss him in their 5/10-5/12 series in Cincy (unless the Reds use off days to shuffle the rotation), so we might not see him face the Crew until mid-June at the earliest.
