The Scoop: Shoulders was solid in short-season Boise last year, but this season he’s showing he’s more than just a minor league slugger with a superhero name. Shoulders has reached base in 16 of his 17 games and is hitting .406/.486/.656 with four home runs. His best tool is power, but he’s also showing signs of improvement with his contact frequency, which was one of the question marks on him coming into the year.

The Scoop: You never get a second chance to make a first impression, went the old shampoo-commercial slogan. If that’s the case, then few 2012 draft picks have set a more positive early tone than Wacha. The 19th pick last June, he has quickly adapted to the speed of the Triple-A game, going 3-0, 1.96 with a .175 opponent average through four starts. In an encouraging sign, he struck out a season-high six batters on Tuesday.

Prospect Hot Sheet Chat With Ben Badler

 

Jake Pequot (Brooklyn): Ben, big fan, thanks for the chat. When do you think Wacha gets the call to St. Louis? Can he help fix their bullpen?

 

Ben Badler: I'd much rather keep him as a starter, especially given his lack of innings in pro ball. He's been better than I expected, but I'm not comfortable impeding his long-term development as a starter by putting him in bullpen now for the potential short-term benefits.

Ben (Long Island): Would Rock Shoulders be on your radar if his name was Rick Smith (or something equally benign)?

 

Ben Badler: He's second in the Midwest League in slugging and fourth in OBP. He's no slouch.

bardin (San Diego): Ronald Torreyes is having a decent start in AA, where he is young for his age. but... he is only 5'9'' and weights 140 pounds. Does he have any sort of realistic chance to stick in the bigs?

 

Ben Badler: Yes. People are sleeping on him after last year. Look, you're probably not going to get more than 5-10 home runs per year out of the guy, but his hand-eye coordination and knack for squaring up the baseball is remarkable, so I think he's going to hit and he's a pretty good defender at second base too. He's underrated.

Drew (Chicago): update on juan carlos paniagua Visa issues?

 

Ben Badler: Still waiting to get things sorted out, last I checked.

Ace (PA): Gregory Polanco is seriously exciting. The defense, arm, plate discipline, bat, and frame all seem to be there. If the power comes what kind of upside does he have?

 

Ben Badler: You said it—there isn't much Polanco can't do. He's a potential franchise player who just gets better every year. The Pirates have taken a lot of unnecessary shots for their player development in the last year or so, but look at the results—it's working, players like Polanco and Hanson are getting better, and their farm system is one of the best in the game.

Aaron (Cincy): How dirty is Tony Cingrani?

 

Ben Badler: Yes.

Two Dogs (The Kennel): Your favorite under-the-radar prospect this year is...

 

Ben Badler: The Reds moving Carlos Contreras from the bullpen to the starting rotation in Bakersfield has my attention. I'm not sure yet if starting is the best long-term fit for him, but so far the results are good and he's showing a power arm with a mid-90s fastball and a plus changeup.

Rattlers rally in seventh to break Whitecaps

Wisconsin plates five runs in the seventh inning

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Mitch Haniger drove in the go ahead runs and scored an important insurance run as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers rallied for a 7-6 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps Saturday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The victory allowed the Timber Rattlers to win the three-game series with the Whitecaps.

 

West Michigan (9-11) loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first inning against Wisconsin starting pitcher Damien Magnifico. But, the Whitecaps only scored one run. A sacrifice fly by Jeff Holm gave them a 1-0 lead.

 

Wisconsin (8-10) loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of first inning on three straight singles. An error on a grounder to first off the bat of Chris McFarland let a run in to tie the game. Parker Berberet drew a walk to force in a run and put the Rattlers up 2-1.

 

The Whitecaps put together a rally against Magnifico to take the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Bennett Pickar drove in the tying run with a single. David Gonzalez put West Michigan up 4-2 with a two-out, two-run double.

 

Jake Stewart made it 5-2 with a two-out solo home run in the top of the seventh against Wisconsin reliever Leonard Lorenzo.

 

Berberet started the Rattlers on the road back with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the seventh. Mike Garza singled with one out and Orlando Arcia drew a walk to put two runners on base. Tyrone Taylor sent a grounder up the middle that was bobbled for an error instead of a force out at second. That error was compounded by a missed catch on a throw to first base. By the time the dust had settled, Garza had scored and Arcia was at third base. The Whitecaps got the second out of the inning on a strikeout, but Taylor stole second on the play to get into scoring position with the go ahead run.

 

Haniger blooped a 2-1 pitch into shallow center to chase both Arcia and Taylor home to give Wisconsin a 6-5 lead.

 

Victor Roache was next and he singled to right-center for his third hit of the game. The ball was bobbled and Haniger raced for home. He scored the insurance run with a headfirst dive that got him in under the tag.

 

West Michigan would get to within a run on a sacrifice fly by Pickar in the top of the eighth. They had runners at first and second with two outs when Taylor Wall came on in relief of Leonard Lorenzo. Wall got the final out of the eighth and pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to nail down Wisconsin's 7-6 victory.

 

The Timber Rattlers begin a new home series on Sunday afternoon with a game against the South Bend Silver Hawks. Game time is 1:05pm.

 

Sunday is Girl Scout Day at the ballpark. The Rattlers and Troop 2355 are holding a "Write to Recover" Journal Drive to benefit the Christine Ann Center & Harbor House as part of Girl Scout Day.

 

Sunday is also a Brewers Sunday presented by 107.5, The Fan. Timber Rattlers players and coaches will be wearing Brewers-themed jerseys during the game. These jerseys will be up for auction after the final home game of the Sunday home game of the regular season on August 25.

 

Before the Rattlers and Silver Hawks play the game on Sunday, fans may play catch on-field. After the game, Timber Rattlers players will be available for an autograph session. The early returns on Victor Roache have been extremely encouraging. In addition to his .900 OPS he's walked 3 times against just 5 strike outs. Things might change for Victor as the opposing teams start to put a book together on him but he's been everything I hoped he'd be out of the gate. This is the first time that this T-Rat group hung in there and slugged it out when the momentum changed which was also extremely uplifting. I'll give Mitch Haniger his well deserved props in addition to Chris' praise in the blog, that OF assist after the bobble which Mehring described was perhaps the biggest moment in the game.

Too bad the rain didn't wash this one out. The Mississippi Braves scored 6 runs in the 2nd inning en route to an easy 14-0 win Saturday night at The Joe. Stars starter Taylor Jungmann lasted only 2 2/3 innings tonight. He allowed 8 runs, 7 earned on 5 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4. Jungmann also hit 2 batters and threw 2 wild pitches in a truly forgettable performance. Jungmann is now 1-4 with an ERA just under 8. Mark Williams pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief giving up 2 runs on 3 hits. Both runs were scored on solo home runs. 40 man roster pitcher Santo Manzanillo pitched 2 innings, allowing 4 runs, 2 earned on 4 hits and 1 walk. Lefty Brian Garman finished up with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

The Stars were limited to 6 hits tonight, all singles, as they were shut out for the 3rd time in 23 games so far this season. Big night for Brandon Macias who was a perfect 4-4 with a triple. It's been a rough start to the season for Macias, but he's now batting .333 over his last ten games. Dionis Hinojosa had two hits for the Manatees and stole his fourth base. Yadiel Rivera was on base twice with a single and a hit by pitch. Greg Hopkins and Nick Ramirez had the other two BC hits.

 

Another good start for Brooks Hall, who has been the ace of the Manatees staff to this point. He went six innings and gave up just three hits. He did walk four batters but both runs he surrendered were unearned. The Brevard defense had three more errors. One each by Rivera, Ramirez and Rafael Neda.

'Tees can't sweep Jays, fall in extras

Brevard rallies to tie game in eighth, but loses 5-3 in ten

VIERA, Fla. - After rallying to tying the game in the eighth inning, the Brevard County Manatees' bid to sweep the first place Dunedin Blue Jays was thwarted thanks to two runs in the top of the tenth in a 5-3 defeat on Saturday night at Space Coast Stadium.

 

Dunedin (15-7) relied on a strong pitching performance from 2011 American League All-Star Ricky Romero, who was making his first start at any level this season.

 

The lefty allowed just one run after Brandon Macias tripled and scored to give the Manatees (12-10), a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Macias finished with four hits to match a career-high, including three off of Dunedin's starter. Romero was lifted after seven innings with no walks, yielding only five hits while he struck out four hitters in the no-decision.

 

Brooks Hall (2-1, 1.59) also did not factor into the decision, though the only two runs he allowed were recorded as unearned. He scattered three hits and walked a season-high four batters with two strikeouts. Both runs came across when K.C. Hobson smashed a grounder past first baseman Nick Ramirez, who was charged with an error on the play.

 

Dunedin extended their lead to 3-1 in the top of the eighth, when Andy Burns doubled, stole third and then scored on a sacrifice fly.

 

In the bottom of that inning, Dionis Hinojosa led off with a walk followed by a John Dishon walk. They executed a double steal with Greg Hopkins at the plate before Hopkins drove them in with a single to center to tie the game.

 

On to the tenth, Hopkins also made a stellar leaping grab to rob Matt Newman of a base hit for the second out with the bases loaded. However, Marcus Knecht made up for it with a two-run double to make it 5-3.

 

Tyler Cravy took the loss as he allowed 2 runs in 1.1 innings, as Kevin Shackelford allowed the double to Knecht that allowed the runners he inherited from Cravy to score.

 

Brevard County will hit the road for a seven-game road trip that begins on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. for the first of four games against the Bradenton Marauders (7-15).

 

David Goforth (1-2, 3.71), who was roughed up in his last start, will toe the rubber for the 'Tees. The Marauders will counter with Nick Kingham (1-2, 3.92) on the mound.

Stars Shutout By M-Braves, Lose 14-0

En route to being shut out for their third time this season, the Huntsville Stars took their worst defeat in 2013 with a 14-0 loss at the hands of the Mississippi Braves on Saturday night at Joe Davis Stadium.

 

After a scoreless first inning, Stars starting pitcher Taylor Jungmann ran into his initial trouble in the top half of the second inning. Jungmann allowed the first seven batters of the frame to reach base in some capacity, ultimately giving up six runs in the inning. The scoring was headlined by a three-run homer from first basemen Barrett Kleinknecht, a two-run double from center fielder Mycal Jones and an RBI groundout from fellow pitcher Alex Wood.

 

Two more runs given up in the third inning wound up chasing Jungmann from the game. The Brewers 2nd ranked prospect only lasted 2.2 innings, giving up eight runs (seven earned) on five hits while striking out four batters to fall to 1-4 on the season. The loss for Jungmann was his fourth in as many starts.

 

On the other side of the spectrum, Wood lived up to the hype as the 7th ranked prospect in the Braves organization on the hill against the Stars. The 22-year-old southpaw shut out the Stars through five innings, giving up just five hits while striking out six batters to earn his first Double-A win. The former Georgia product improved his SL-leading ERA to 0.67 while increasing his scoreless innings streak to 17.1.

 

Once Wood excited the game after the fifth inning, M-Braves relievers Erik Hamren (3.0 IP, 1 H,1 K, 1 BB) and Chasen Shreve (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 BB) blanked the Stars for the final four innings of the game to finish off the shutout.

 

The M-Braves churned out the rest of their 14 runs against Stars relievers Mark Williams and Santo Manzanillo. For Mississippi, third baseman Edward Salcedo and right fielder Christian Marrero each added solo homers. The M-Braves also got two hits apiece from shortstop Jaime Pedroza and catcher Shawn McGill.

 

On the bright side, the Stars got 1.1 innings of scoreless relief from lefty Brian Garman.

 

For Huntsville, the loss was their second straight. Overall on the series, the Stars pitching staff has now given up 30 runs over the first three games against the M-Braves.

 

The Stars and M-Braves will play game four of their five-game series at Joe Davis Stadium on Sunday. Huntsville will send RHP Andy Moye (1-1, 4.34 ERA) to the bump to square off against Mississippi RHP Gus Schlosser (1-1, 6.06 ERA). First pitch is at 4:03 PM.
