One dynamic I wonder about with the Manatees --

We tend to think they have Space Coast Stadium all to themselves after Nationals spring training.

Similar to the Brewers in Maryvale, though, extended spring training for all the Nats' non full-season kids is taking place now, and when the Rookie Leagues start, the Gulf Coast League Nationals will play day games almost exclusively.

Just wondering if the two organizations bump into each other during the course of the Manatees season, locker rooms, etc.

It's early in the season, but Chris McFarland is ascending on my prospect list.

Final: Wisconsin 7, West Michigan (Tigers) 4

Big inning helps Rattlers to big win

McFarland and Sermo go deep in 7-run second inning

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers cracked a pair of home runs in a seven-run second inning on their way to a 7-4 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps Thursday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Chris McFarland and Jose Sermo each hit long homers in Wisconsin's big inning to lead the Rattlers to their second straight win.

McFarland started scoring for the Timber Rattlers (7-9). Victor Roache extended his hitting streak to four games with a leadoff single in the second. McFarland crushed a 2-0 pitch from Montreal Robertson over the wall in left for a two-run homer. Robertson gave up a walk, a double, and another walk with one out to let Wisconsin load the bases. Adam Giacalone scored from third on a wild pitch by Robertson. Then, Sermo launched a long home run to right-center. The three run dinger put the Rattlers up 6-0. Later in the inning, Orlando Arcia scored from second after a miscue on a grounder off the bat of Roache to put the Rattlers up 7-0.

West Michigan (8-10) got on the scoreboard against Wisconsin starting pitcher Eric Semmelhack in the top of the fifth. Zach Kirksey homered to right to lead off the inning. That would be the only mark against Semmelhack. He went five innings, scattered six hits, walked two, and struck out two before turning the game over to the bullpen.

Preston Gainey took the mound in the top of the sixth inning and worked two scoreless innings. But, the Whitecaps made it interesting in the top of the eighth. They loaded the bases with one out on a hit batsman, a double, and a walk. Jake Stewart drove in a run with a single. Then, Kirksey singled off the glove of a diving Adam Giacalone at first base and two more runs scored to make the score 7-4 and bring the potential game-tying run to the plate for West Michigan. But Gainey recorded a strikeout and a routine fly out to center to get out of the eighth.

Rodolfo Fernandez came on for the top of the ninth inning and pitched a 1-2-3 inning to close out the Whitecaps and to earn his first professional save.

The Timber Rattlers and Whitecaps continue their series on Friday night. Tyler Wagner (1-0, 4.09) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Hudson Randall (1-2, 0.64) is set to start for West Michigan. Game time is 6:35pm.

Friday night is a North Shore Bank Family Night. Children 12 and under receive a voucher good for a free hotdog and soda. Children 14 and under may run the bases after the game courtesy of Molina Healthcare.

If you can't make it out to the stadium, tune for the debut broadcast of Timber Rattlers baseball on My NEW32's Sports Showdown. The game is also available on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm.

Wisconsin Boxscore

This was a fun game to watch, I didn't get home until the middle of the 1st but thanks to the good ole DVR I didn't miss a pitch. For those of you who skip the boxscore link, Tyrone Taylor returned to action with a pinch running appearance late in the game. I'm intrigued by the movement on Rodolfo Fernandez' pitches, I wish I had firm number for where he was velocity wise during the 9th. I shouldn't have been surprised, but I still am, by Chris McFarland's power, he could be a double digit HR guy if he pans out.

I just really like the athleticism of this team and I want to believe the batting averages/offense will come around as the younger players settle into full season ball.

Final: Huntsville 13 Mississippi 8

The Stars erupted for their biggest offensive output on the young season tonight, scoring 13 runs on 16 hits in defeating the Mississippi Braves 13-8. Stars starter Jimmy Nelson was very solid once again. Nelson pitched 6 strong innings, allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, on 4 hits and no walks. Nelson also struck out 6 while earning his 3rd win of the season. The bullpen behind Nelson was a little shaky tonight. Rehabbing pitcher Mark Rogers pitched the 7th allowing 3 earned runs on 4 hits and 2 walks. Rogers topped out at 90 on the radar gun. Rogers threw 36 pitches, 19 for strikes. Seems like a step back compared to his outing on Tuesday night. Eric Marzec also had some difficulties tonight, allowing 3 earned runs on 4 hits over 1 1/3 innings. Closer Casey Medlen came on to record the final 2 outs to end the game.

Huntsville Box Score

The Huntsville bats were alive tonight. The Stars were led by the middle of their lineup as Jason Rogers went 3-5 with 3 runs scoed and 3 RBI's, Kentrail Davis also went 3-5 with 2 runs scored and 4 RBI's. Davis had both a double and home run. And Brock Kjeldgaard went, you guessed it, 3-5 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBI's. Kjeldgaard hits were all for extra bases, a double and 2 home runs. Coming into tonights game, the Stars has a combined 7 home runs in 20 games, so their 3 homer output is a big development. Lead off hitter Nick Shaw went 4-5 with 2 runs scored and an RBI tonight.

Team RISP: 8-for-13.

Team LOB: 6.

Great to see the Stars getting the hits with runners in scoring position. It's been an area they have struggled with throughout the season. Great night for Huntsville in this area.

Final: Dunedin 2 Brevard County 3

'Tees edge first-place Jays

Three-run sixth propels Brevard past Dunedin, 3-2

By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - Three runs - all scored in the sixth inning - were enough to get the Brevard County Manatees and starting pitcher Jed Bradley a win on Thursday night, taking a 3-2 decision from the Dunedin Blue Jays.

Coming off of a seven-game road trip that saw the 'Tees (11-9) go 3-4, the Manatees fell behind early to Dunedin (14-6), as the Blue Jays struck first in the first inning. A leadoff walk followed by back-to-back singles to score a run before an out was recorded. A double play behind Bradley settled him down, and he was able to take care of business the next two innings.

Dunedin's only other run, was an unearned run that came in the fourth. Derrick Chung reached on a fielder's choice that resulted in the second out, then advanced on a wild pitch and scored from second on a throwing error by shortstop Yadiel Rivera.

With Dunedin starting pitcher Jesse Hernandez needing just 48 pitches to plow through the first five innings, John Dishon took the 49th pitch and deposited it over the left field fence for his first home run of the season to make it a 2-1 game.

Two batters later, Greg Hopkins doubled and then Nick Ramirez followed with a walk. Both runners then advanced on a passed ball and reigning FSL Player of the Week Cameron Garfield would bring them both home with a two-run single that signaled the end of the night for Hernandez.

Brevard County threatened with runners on first and second in the seventh and then loaded the bases in the eighth, but didn't score. That would not matter as the bullpen trio of Andre Lamontagne, Kevin Shackelford and Seth Harvey shut the door over the final three innings. Harvey struck out the side in the ninth for his fourth save of the year.

Bradley (2-1, 3.45) finished with four strikeouts and scattered six hits, while walking two in his six innings of work. Of the two runs that Bradley allowed, just one was earned.

The Manatees will attempt to inch closer to Dunedin for first place in the North Division on Friday night at 6:35 p.m., when Drew Gagnon (0-2, 9.72) will oppose Blue Jays righty Aaron Sanchez (1-0, 1.35).

Audio Highlights

Jays can't withstand 'Tees 6th inn. rally

RHP Jesse Hernandez was cruising with a 2-0 lead through five innings, but Brevard County's bats came alive late

By Tyler Murray / Dunedin Blue Jays

Dunedin, FL - For the first half of Thursday's game against the Brevard County Manatees, the Dunedin Blue Jays looked poised for yet another series-opening victory. Then they hit the bottom of the sixth inning.

RHP Jesse Hernandez (L, 2-3) had allowed just three hits through five scoreless innings, but came unraveled in the sixth. Leading 2-0 and needing just three outs to lock down his fourth quality start of the season, Hernandez allowed a leadoff homer to nine hitter John Dishon. Gregory Hopkins then lined a one-out double to left, and after a walk and a passed ball, reigning FSL Player of the Week Cameron Garfield smacked a two-RBI single to center, putting the Manatees on top for good, 3-2.

Dunedin started out hot, plating a first-inning run after 2B Jon Berti led off the game with a walk, and SS Peter Mooney followed with a single before 3B Andy Burns knocked in his 13th run of the season with a base hit of his own.

The Blue Jays made it a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning thanks Yadiel Rivera's eighth error of the season. With two outs and C Derrick Chung on second, CF Matt Newman grounded one into the shortstop hole, which Rivera fielded and threw off-balance to first. Nick Ramirez could not handle the tough hop, and Newman reached safely as Chung came all the way around to score.

Aside from a few early struggles, RHP Jed Bradley (W, 2-1) logged his best start of the season, holding the D-Jays to one earned run in six innings on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts. RHP Seth Harvey (S, 4) struck out the side in order in the ninth to close out the victory.

RHP Aaron Sanchez (1-0, 3.05 ERA) will look to even the series tomorrow as he faces RHP Drew Gagnon (0-2, 9.72) in another 6:35 p.m. start.

Brevard County Box Score

John Dishon belted his first home run of the season. Nick Ramirez was on base three times with two singles and a walk. Cameron Garfield had a 2-4 night with a double and two RBI. Final: Nashville 5, Memphis (Cardinals) 2

Sounds Take Down Rival Redbirds In Series Opener, 5-2

Gennett Goes 3-for-3 To Raise Batting Average To .417 On Season

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds defeated the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds, 5-2, on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium in the opener of a four-game series.

Nashville (6-12) improved to 4-0 in series openers at Greer and snapped a three-game skid with its first come-from-behind victory.

Second baseman Scooter Gennett went 3-for-3 for the Sounds to extend his hitting streak to seven games, matching his longest effort of the year. He has produced knocks in 14 of his 15 games and reached base safely in all 15. Gennett is batting .417 on the year.

Outfielder Caleb Gindl also continued his hot hitting for Nashville, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs to run his current hit streak to five games (6-for-13, .462).

Sounds starter Johnny Hellweg did not allow a hit in the first four frames before Memphis broke through in the fifth for a pair of knocks and the game's first run. Adron Chambers reached on a one-out single, stole second, and scored on Oscar Taveras' two-out RBI single to center.

Hellweg allowed one run on two hits in five innings of work. He struck out a season-high six and also walked three batters and hit a pair during his 90-pitch effort.

Nashville took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with a pair of runs that scored following an error by Memphis shortstop Greg Garcia.

Gennett singled with one out and Hunter Morris followed with a grounder to first, where Brock Peterson touched the bag and his throw to second beat Gennett to the base but Garcia failed to apply the tag. Sean Halton followed by greeting Redbirds reliever Maikel Cleto with a first-pitch, game-tying single to left (audio). Cleto hit Stephen Parker then Cole Garner and Gindl drew back-to-back walks, with the latter forcing home Halton with the go-ahead run (audio).

Lyons ended up with a no-decision for Memphis after striking out nine batters and allowing one unearned run on three hits in his 5 1/3 frames.

The Sounds extended the lead to 3-1 with another run off Cleto (0-1), who took the loss, in the seventh. Dayton Buller struck out to open the frame but reached first on a wild pitch. After being sacrificed to second by Gennett, the Nashville backstop scored on Morris' two-out RBI double to center (audio).

Memphis pulled back within a run in the top of the eighth when Peterson hit a leadoff double and later scored on a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-2 contest.

Gindl plated a pair of insurance runs for the Sounds in the home half of the eighth with a two-run, opposite-field triple to left-center off Sam Freeman (audio). Halton (walk) and Parker (hit by pitch) scored on the knock to increase the lead to 5-2.

Chris Jakubauskas (1-0) earned the win following 1 2/3 frames of scoreless relief for the Sounds. Rob Wooten worked a scoreless ninth to nail down his fourth save of the year (audio, final out).

Jeff Bianchi finished 0-for-5 in his fifth rehab game for the Sounds. He is hitting .227 (5-for-22) with the club.

The teams continue the series with another 7:05 p.m. meeting on Friday. Right-hander Mike Fiers (0-0, 0.00) will make the start for the Sounds and face Memphis southpaw Nick Additon (1-1, 5.79).

Nashville Box Score

Oh, Scooter, making Muppet Babies everywhere proud. Thankfully, it doesn't appear Caleb Gindl is going to wait until July, as he did in 2012, to turn around another rough start. Among those in an outstanding Sounds bullpen, Jesus Sanchez (stats) has been as near-perfect as baseball allows.

STARS SET SEASON-HIGH IN RUNS, HITS WITH VICTORY OVER M-BRAVES

Alex Cohen, Huntsville Stars

Following a stretch where they scored five runs in their last three games, the Stars offense broke out for a season-high 13 runs and 16 hits in a 13-8 victory over the Mississippi Braves on Thursday night at Joe Davis Stadium.

While Huntsville starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson gave up an unearned run in the first inning, the Stars offense began to break out in the third inning against M-Braves starter Michael Lee. After catcher Robinzon Diaz and second baseman Nick Shaw reached via Mississippi errors, RBI singles from second baseman T.J Mittelstaedt and first baseman Jason Rogers and a two-run double from Kentrail Davis made the score 3-1.

The offensive barrage continued into the fifth inning when Davis and right fielder Brock Kjeldgaard hit back-to-back homers off of Lee to put the Stars up 7-1.

One inning later, the Stars tacked on five runs against M-Braves reliever Ryan Woolley. The Stars batted around in the inning, and the scoring was highlighted by an RBI double by Shaw, two-run double from Rogers, RBI double by Kjeldgaard and a bases-loaded walk drawn by center fielder Rene Tosoni. When all was said and done, the Stars were up by a score of 12-2.

Huntsville scored their only other run when Kjeldgaard launched his second homer off the game against position player Barrett Kleinknecht, who came into pitch for the first time this season.

The 13 runs was plenty for the Stars pitching staff, especially Nelson, who improved to 3-0 on the year after giving up two runs (one earned) over six innings while striking out six batters.

In his second rehab appearance with the Stars, RHP Mark Rogers struggled by giving up three runs and four hits in one inning of work. Rogers also walked two batters.

After Rogers exited the game following the seventh inning, righty Eric Marzec gave up four runs in 1.1 innings to put the M-Braves final run total at eight. Reliever Casey Medlen recording the final two outs for the Stars.

On offense, the Stars were paced by Shaw who had a season-high four hits. In the middle of the lineup, Rogers, Davis and Kjeldgaard each had three hits and combined for ten runs batted in. The 13 runs and 17 hits for the Stars were both a season high.

The win for the Stars snapped their three-game losing streak.

The Stars and M-Braves will play game two of their five-game series at Joe Davis Stadium on Friday. Huntsville will send RHP Ariel Pena (1-2, 5.51 ERA) to the bump to square off against Tennessee RHP J.R Graham (1-1, 2.50 ERA). First pitch is at the regular time of 6:43 PM.

Not saying he's going to be Southern League MVP, but the Stars' Jason Rogers is going to receive consideration. Just sayin' -- the league's best players often get promoted at midseason, and Rogers will likely remain for all of 2013. Miggy Cabrera was promoted to the big leagues after 69 AA games in 2003, which led to Corey Hart's MVP trophy.

Huntsville INF Nick Shaw is going to see major league ballfields -- it may be cup-of-coffee-ish, but he's going to get there.

]Mark Rogers pitched the 7th allowing 3 earned runs on 4 hits and 2 walks. Rogers topped out at 90 on the radar gun.

That is not very encouraging, I really don't know what they are going to do with him. I certainly don't want him pitching any close games in the majors.
