Stars Lose Game, Series to Barons

After winning the first two games of their series against the Birmingham Barons, the Huntsville Stars dropped their third straight game at Regions Field, losing the rubbermatch of a five-game series by a score of 8-3 on Wednesday afternoon.

 

Making his first start of his professional career, Stars lefty Alan Williams got off to a shaky first inning. Following a leadoff single by shortstop Tyler Saladino and a one-out walk issued to right fielder Trayce Thompson, an RBI single by designated hitter Andy Wilkins put the Barons on the board early. Later in the inning, a two-run double by first baseman Dan Black plated both Wilkins and Thompson to make the score 3-0.

 

After a solo homer by Stars designated hitter Mike Walker cut the Stars deficit to two in the top of the second inning, the Barons provided the equalizer off Williams in the bottom half of the frame. Following a one-out single by third baseman Cody Puckett, another single from second baseman Marcus Semien combined with a Stars error allowed Puckett to score to put Birmingham up 4-1.

 

In the end, Williams pitched four innings in his first start, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out six to fall to 0-2 on the season.

 

On offense, the Barons picked up two more runs in the fifth inning on a two-run blast by Wilkins off of Stars reliever Mark Williams. Birmingham also scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning off of Stars lefty Brian Garman.

 

From the pitching perspective for the Barons, starting pitcher Stephen McCray improved to 3-1 on the year after giving up just one run in six innings pitched. The Stars scored their two other runs of the ballgame in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Brock Kjeldgaard accompanied by one of their season-high five fielding errors for the Barons on the game.

 

For the Stars, Kjeldgaard and T.J Mittelstaedt paced the offense with two hits apiece.

 

The loss for the Stars was their third straight overall after winning six of their first seven road contests to start the season.

 

With the Stars traveling back to Huntsville on Wednesday, they will welcome the Mississppi Braves into town to open up a five-game set at Joe Davis Stadium on Thursday night.

 

Huntsville will send RHP Jimmy Nelson (2-0, 1.25 ERA) to the bump to square off against M-Braves RHP Michael Lee (2-0, 4.61 ERA). First pitch is at 6:43 PM.

I still really like the MWL but the start of this season has been miserable, the article's picture on the main page is of TWC Field.

Final: Birmingham 8 Huntsville 3

 

Birmingham jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead and never looked back as the Barons won today 8-3. Alan Williams made his 1st professional start for the Stars. Williams went 4 innings, allowing 4 runs, 3 of them earned, on 6 hits and 2 walks. The lefthander struck out 4 and threw 41 of his 70 pitches for strikes. Williams got better as the game went along. Just a guess, but it may have been that he was trying to pace himself knowing he was going to be in there for a while, unlike his typical relief appearances. During the broadcast, Alex Cohen mentioned Williams was in the 87-89 range.

 

Following Williams on the mound today was Mark Williams. Mark Williams worked 2 innings and allowed 2 earned runs on 2 hits and 1 walk. Brian Garman finished the game for Huntsville, allowing 2 earned runs on 3 hits and a walk.

On the offensive side, the Stars were held to only 6 hits today. 2 each from T.J. Mittlestaedt and Brock Kjeldgaard. Mike Walker broke out of an 0-10 streak with a solo home run in the 2nd inning. It was Walker's 2nd homer this season. Kentrail Davis had the other hit for Huntsville.

HUNTSVILLE:

Team RISP: 2-for-11.

Team LOB: 11.

 

Birmingham was giving Huntsville chances. 5 Barons errors today helped put Stars runners on base, but another day where the clutch hit was missing.

 

A positive note is that catcher Shawn Zarraga is available again after a minor injury suffered a couple days ago.

I really wish there was more to say today. The Stars end their road trip losing the last 3 games and another series. After opening the season by going 5-1, they have now lost 11 of 14 to put their record at 8-12. But, it's early still, 120 games to go. Huntsville returns to "The Joe" tomorrow evening to begin a 5 game series with the Mississippi Braves. The Braves have been hot, going 8-2 in their last 10. Jimmy Nelson will take the mound for the Stars, looking again to play the role of stopper. Game time is scheduled for 6:43. Don't forget to join Alex Cohen for his pregame show starting at 6:28.
