BA's take on Correa and Roache. Gerrit Cole also discussed in some detail

Monday Prospect Notebook: Victor Roache Homers In First Pro At-Bat

Roache’s home run was a long drive. It hit off the scoreboard that sits above the outfield wall in left field. Power is Roache’s calling card—he doesn’t have many other plus tools, but before the wrist injury, he hit 30 home runs with the detuned BBCOR bats in 2011, so he’s shown he can make baseballs disappear.

Additional analysis later tonight...

Stars Silenced by Barons

By Alex Cohen / Huntsville Stars

After scoring 18 runs during their first two games against the Birmingham Barons, the Stars managed just four hits and a run on Monday afternoon in a 3-1 loss at Regions Field.

For the Barons, the story of the game was starting pitcher Erik Johnson. The 4th ranked prospect in the White Sox organization shutout the Stars through seven innings, giving up just three hits while striking out ten hitters and only walking one. The ten punchouts for Johnson was the most for a Barons starting pitcher since Andre Rienzo did so in August of last year against the Stars.

Johnson improved to 2-0 on the season with the win.

For the Stars, starting pitcher Taylor Jungmann was tabbed with the hard-pressed loss. The 2nd ranked prospect in the Brewers system gave up just one run and five hits over six innings to fall to 1-3 on the year. Jungmann has now not given up a run in nine of his last eleven innings pitched over the last two starts (0-2).

The only run that Jungmann gave up was in the second inning. The 23-year-old righty walked designated hitter Andy Wilkins to begin the inning and then give up back-to-back singles to first basemen Dan Black and second basemen Tyler Saladino. One batter later, an RBI groundout from catcher Miguel Gonzalez scored Wilkins to make the score 1-0. Jungmann then got left fielder Michael Earley to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end inning without any further damage.

After Jungmann exited before the seventh inning, Stars reliever Santo Manzanillo gave up a run in each of the two innings that he pitched to give the Barons a 3-0 lead going into the ninth inning. For Manzanillo, he has now given up a run in his last three appearances.

With Barons reliever Kevin Vance in the game, the Stars mounted their only real rally in the ninth inning. Following three walks to right fielder Kentrail Davis, third baseman Mike Walker and left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard, an RBI single from center fielder Rene Tosoni made the score 3-1 and kept the bases loaded with just one out. Vance then buckled down and got catcher Adam Weisenburger and designated hitter T.J Mittelstaedt to pop up to end the game and earn his first save of the year.

On offense, the Stars struck out 11 times in total, their fourth straight game with double-digit punchouts. Huntsville got a hit apiece from Tosoni, Kjeldgaard, Weisenburger and second basemen Nick Shaw.

The loss for the Stars snapped their four-game road winning streak and two-game overall winning streak.

The Stars and Barons will play game four of their five-game series at Regions Park on Tuesday night. Huntsville will send RHP Andy Moye (1-0, 4.61 ERA) to the bump to square off against Birmingham RHP Scott Snodgress (2-1, 4.24 ERA). First pitch is at 7:05 PM.

Cameron Garfield named FSL Player of the Week

‘Tees catcher hit .310 with four homers from April 15-21

Frank Longobardo, Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. – The Florida State League announced on Monday that Brevard County Manatees catcher Cameron Garfield was named the league’s player of the week for the period of April 15-21.

In seven games last week, Garfield hit .310 (8-for-25) with four home runs, seven runs batted in and seven runs scored. Garfield had a .393 on-base percentage and a .800 slugging percentage in those seven games. On April 16, he hit two homers in a win against Lakeland, including a two-run shot that tied the game in the eighth inning.

Garfield enters play on Monday, ranked second in the FSL in both home runs (5) and total bases (40). He is also fourth in the league with a .571 slugging percentage.

The 21-year-old from San Diego, Calif. currently leads the Manatees with 11 runs scored, 12 RBI and a .873 on-base plus slugging percentage. Garfield is also currently in the midst of a ten-game hitting streak.

He is in his fifth professional season and was drafted by Milwaukee out of the Murrieta Valley (Calif.) High School in the second round of the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

Final: Birmingham 3 Huntsville 1

The Birmingham Barons, behind a very strong pitching performance from Erik Johnson, held the Stars bats in check as Birmingham took game 3 this afternoon 3-1. Stars starter Taylor Jungmann pitched a good game himself. Jungmann, the Brewers # 2 overall prospect, went 6 innings allowing a run on 5 hits and 4 walks. Santo Manzanillo pitched the final 2 innings today, allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, on 3 hits and 3 walks. Alex Cohen mentioned during the broadcast that Manzanillo was in the 95-96 range today according to stadium radar gun.

Walks have been a problem for Stars pitching all season. Currently, the Stars lead the Southern League in walks allowed with 97 in 18 games. Chattanooga is second with 73 in 18 games. Ariel Pena leads all pitchers with 14 walks, Jungmann is tied for 3rd with 11, Manzanillo is 6th with 10, and Arcenio Leon is 8th with 9. Hopefully this trend doesn't continue.

Huntsville Box Score

The Stars were limited to 4 hits and were kept off the scoreboard until the 9th. Kentrail Davis and Brock Kjeldgaard were the only Stars that reached base more than once. Davis on 2 walks and Kjeldgaard with a single and a walk. Nick Shaw had the only extra base hit with a double in the 3rd. Rene Tosoni and Adam Weisenburger had the other hits for Huntsville.

The Stars struck out 11 times today, after striking out 13 times yesterday. This has been an issue for Stars hitters so far this season. They are now leading the league in strikeouts with 152. Jacksonville is 2nd with 136. Much like the walks with the pitching staff, here's hoping this can be turned around.

After leaving the game early yesterday, Alex mentioned that catcher Shawn Zarraga is day to day with a minor groin injury.

On a positive note, Brewers pitcher Mark Rogers will begin a rehabilitation assignment with the Stars starting tomorrow.

Final: Brevard County 1 Tampa 12

Brevard County Box Score

The Yankees only had one more hit than the Manatees, yet scored 11 more runs. Part of the reason for that is Tampa hitters walked 11 times while striking out just four times. Brevard, on the other hand, walked just twice while striking out eight times. The Manatees also committed four errors which didn't help their cause. Still it was not a great night for BC pitching. David Goforth started but didn't make it out of the second inning. He gave up five runs, three earned on four hits and two walks. Matt Miller relieved Goforth and didn't have much better luck. Miller gave up six runs on three hits and four walks. He also hit a pair of batters. On a bright note, Andre Lamontagne saw his first action of the season and worked a scoreless inning.

Nick Ramirez led the BC offense. He was on base three times with a single, double and a walk. Greg Hopkins had a pair of hits after getting yesterday off. Cody Hawn, Yadiel Rivera, Brandon Macias and Lance Roenicke had the other Manatee hits, all singles. Rivera had two more errors in this game. Goforth and Macias had the other two.

Sounds Routed By Storm Chasers, 12-3

Bianchi Homers, Scores Two Runs For Nashville In Losing Effort

Nashville Sounds

Jeff Bianchi (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Left-hander Will Smith turned in a dominant start and the Omaha offense erupted for a nine-run inning during the Storm Chasers' 12-3 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Monday evening at Greer Stadium.

Smith (2-1) struck out eight batters while holding the Sounds to one run on five hits over six innings of action to earn the victory. Four Storm Chasers pitchers combined to rack up 14 K's on the night.

Every member of the Omaha lineup scored a run in the contest and five players logged multiple-hit efforts, led by Johnny Giavotella's 3-for-6, three-RBI night, as the Storm Chasers plated a season-high 12 runs against four Sounds hurlers.

Rehabbing infielder Jeff Bianchi scored two of Nashville's three runs, belting a homer and a double as part of his 2-for-4 evening.

Omaha took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning against Sounds starter Zach Kroenke. After the southpaw issued back-to-back one-out walks and uncorked a wild pitch to move Adam Moore to third with two outs, David Lough beat out a grounder to second on a bang-bang play to net the visitors' first run of the night.

The Storm Chasers increased the lead to 3-0 in the fifth. The red-hot Lough -- who has posted multiple-hit efforts in each of the game this series -- led off with a double to left and later scored on Giavotella's one-out two-bagger into the left field corner, which chased Kroenke from the contest. Later in the frame, Anthony Seratelli laid down a well-executed bunt single up the third base line against reliever Michael Olmsted to plate Giavotella with the inning's second run.

Kroenke (0-2) drew the loss after giving up three runs on four hits over his 4 1/3 frames of action.

Omaha blew the game wide open against the Sounds' bullpen in the sixth, sending 12 batters to the plate and adding nine runs to extend the lead to 12-0. In the inning, nine consecutive Storm Chaser batters reached base against Nashville pitchers.

After Olmsted walked the bases loaded with one out, the big right-hander surrendered a two-run double to Giavotella to make it a 5-0 Storm Chasers lead. Olmsted threw only 10 of his 31 pitches for strikes on the night.

Kyle Heckathorn took over on the hill and was greeted by a Xavier Nady two-run single. The Storm Chasers then drew three consecutive walks from the right-hander, the last of which plated Nady, before Heckathorn uncorked a wild pitch to bring Anthony Seratelli plateward.

Brandon Wood put an exclamation mark on the nine-run frame when he followed with a massive three-homer to left off Heckathorn. The infielder's first big fly of the season made it a 12-0 contest.

Bianchi put the Sounds on the board in the home half of the sixth with a one-out solo homer to left off Smith.

Nashville netted the final two runs of the night in the eighth against Omaha reliever Donnie Joseph. Blake Davis led off by drawing a walk, moved to third on a Bianchi double, and scored on a Hunter Morris groundout. Sean Halton followed with an RBI single to left to bring in Bianchi.

The Sounds will look to gain a series split when the teams wrap up the four-game set with an 11:05 a.m. finale on Tuesday morning. Right-hander Frankie De La Cruz (1-1, 3.09) will toe the slab for the Sounds and face Omaha left-hander Ryan Verdugo (0-1, 7.71).

Final: Quad Cities (Astros) 7, Wisconsin 2 (11 Innings)

Quad Cities gets five in the eleventh to top Wisconsin

River Bandits rally with two out in 11th to take second straight from Rattlers

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Quad Cities River Bandits took advantage of three two-out walks in the top of the eleventh inning to score five times in the extra inning to defeat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 7-2 Monday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Jordan Scott put Quad Cities in front with an RBI single and Teoscar Hernandez expanded the lead with a bases-clearing triple in the eleventh.

Tyrone Taylor started Wisconsin's first inning with a single. He stole second and tagged on a fly out to deep left to take third with one out. Mitch Haniger drove in Taylor with an RBI grounder to short for a 1-0 Timber Rattlers lead.

Quad Cities (11-5) tied the game in the top of the fourth inning. Rio Ruiz singled in a run with two outs to even the game 1-1.

An odd sequence gave the River Bandits the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Austin Elkins reached on a single and took second on a passed ball. A ground out allowed Elkins to take third base. Terrell Joyce was at the plate and that's when the weirdness started. Joyce swung at a pitch and made contact with the glove of catcher Clint Coulter. The ball trickled to the mound and Elkins broke for the plate. He beat the throw to score the run as Joyce eventually made it to first ahead of the throw.

The River Bandits turned down the catcher's interference call on Coulter and took the result of the play, a fielder's choice to let the run score and put them ahead 2-1.

Their lead did not last long.

Taylor drew a walk to start the bottom of the sixth inning. A ground out moved Taylor to second base, but he was still there with two outs. Then, Victor Roache lined a 2-2 pitch off the base of the wall in center for an RBI double to tie the game.

The Rattlers (5-9) almost won the game in the bottom of the tenth. Taylor was on second with two outs. Mitch Haniger sent a grounder up the middle, but Quad Cities shortstop Carlos Correa ranged far to his left to keep the ball from getting to the outfield, but Correa had no play on Haniger at first and Taylor raced for home. Correa's throw arrived just ahead of Taylor and the speedy Wisconsin outfielder was ruled out on a close play.

Rattlers reliever Martin Viramontes retired the first two batters he faced in the top of the eleventh inning. Then, he walked the next three batters to load the bases. Scott singled to right to drive in the first run. Hernandez tripled to left-center to drive in three more runs. A wild pitch by Viramontes let Hernandez score the final run of the inning as the score suddenly went to 7-2.

The Rattlers did not score in their half of the eleventh despite a catcher's interference that let Roache reach base and singles by Clint Coulter and Alfredo Rodriguez.

Tuesday is the final meeting of the series between the Rattlers and River Bandits. Game time is 12:05pm. Ryan Gibbard (0-0, 0.93) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Quad Cities has Mike Hauschild (1-0, 4.35) set to start.

Tuesday is a Baker Tilly Business Person & Senior Citizens Special presented by WVBO and AM1280, WNAM. Show your business card when you purchase a ticket and for $11.50 you will receive a box seat ticket, a beverage and your choice of brat or hot dog. The offer is also available to senior citizens (55 & older).

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, tune in for the action on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 11:45am.

WP: John Neely (1-1)

LP: Martin Viramontes (0-1)

TIME: 3:02

ATTN: 489

Wisconsin Boxscore

For the record I thought Tyrone Taylor was in under the tag in the 10th watching it live and after watching it 3 times on the DVR my opinion didn't change. The throw beat him, but the tag was slow and he actually knocked the catcher's foot away from home plate. My only other thought is that Victor Roache hasn't exactly been smooth in the OF through 2 games, though when he makes contact he hits the ball with authority.

Brevard County crushed by Yankees

Four errors, 11 walks doom 'Tees in 12-1 thrashing

By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees

TAMPA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees scored a run in the top of the first inning but that's all they would get and the 'Tees pitching and defense quickly gave in to the Tampa Yankees on Monday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field in a 12-1 thrashing.

Chadwin Stang led off the night with a walk and he would later score on a Nick Ramirez double. Six more hits would be recorded for the Manatees (10-8), but no more runs came across the plate.

Both Stang (nine games) and recently-named Florida State League Player of the Week Cameron Garfield (ten games) saw their hitting streaks come to an end. Lance Roenicke though extended his to six games with a single in the fifth inning.

The Yankees (9-9) answered the Manatees first inning run, with one of their own in the bottom of the inning and then poured on ten more runs in the next two innings to take an 11-1 lead through three.

Each member of the Yankees batting order reached base at least three times, with two innings of ten or more batters even though they combined for just nine hits. Brevard County's pitching staff issued eleven walks and struck out just four hitters, while defensively the 'Tees committed four errors.

Manatees starting pitcher David Goforth (1-2, 3.71) struggled out of the gate and had the shortest start of his career as he lasted only 1.2 innings. He was charged with a total of five runs, just three earned, on four hits and two walks with one strikeout.

Matt Miller came on in relief and recorded just two outs as he surrendered six runs on three hits and four walks. The back end of the bullpen had better results with Tyler Cravy allowing just one run in 3.1 innings of work. Andre Lamontagne made his season debut after being activated from the disabled list with a scoreless seventh and Tommy Toledo finished with a scoreless eighth.

The rubber game of the three-game set between Brevard County and Tampa will be Tuesday night at 7:00 PM (6:00 Central). Jacob Barnes (2-0, 1.50) will get the call for the Manatees, while the Yankees will give the ball to Mikey O'Brien (1-1, 7.71).

Tuesday's game will be the last in a seven-game road swing for the 'Tees before an off day Wednesday and the beginning of a three-game series with the Dunedin Blue Jays on Thursday.
