Wooten - Why no love?

I don't know much about him, but he gets no love by scouts. He has consistently pitched well for all 5 seasons in the minors as a closer. He doesn't give up a lot of hits or HRs, keeps the walks down with K/9 over 9.0.

Hard to argue his performance. I assume he does not throw hard and that's the reason otherwise he'd be in our top 20 prospect list. But he rarely gets mentioned as a prospect. I don't recall Melvin ever mention him.

Thoughts?

Probably because he is somewhat of a soft tosser who relies more on deception and guile. Those guys tend to have a harder time making it to the Majors. Then, he is just coming back from injury, although a couple of years ago. His numbers after the injury were nowhere near as good as they were before. He seems to be settling in only now and perhaps a little last year.

This is probably a key season for Rob. Hopefully, he keeps doing as well as he is now.

For instance, he never had K/9 less than 11.2 before 2010 (all of which he missed). He has never approached 10/9 since. Is it because he still hasn't come fully back from injury or because he is struggling against better competition?

I think he's someone they like, but I don't know if they view him as a prospect. He was a non roster invitee this past spring. As long as he keeps getting outs, he'll get noticed. If not by Milwaukee, by another organization.

I've always enjoyed following Wooten for the reasons stated. He's had to prove himself at each level. Sometimes it's initially been a struggle, but he's managed. The year off for Tommy John surgery set him back as well, or else he might have been in the pen early last year
