Look for Nashville and Wisconsin media notes at the links just prior to their game times.

New this season: Brevard County has media notes; as of now, it's a unique link each day, but look for it just prior to game time each day within the "Stats and Scores" banner here.

Once we're aware of the new online location for Huntsville's Media Notes this season, we'll let you know. (Coming soon, we're told!)

Prospect Hot Sheet Chat With Matt Eddy

@Jaypers413 (IL): In terms of high ceiling prospects, who has been the biggest disappointment for you thus far?

Matthew Eddy: I’d probably go with Gerrit Cole based on his pitch inefficiency with Triple-A Indianapolis and also the fact that he’s allowed more than a hit per inning to batters who, for the most part, haven’t seen his mid-90s heat and double-plus slider before.

Chris (Toronto): Stetson Allie has a 1450 ops in his last 10 games, did you guys forget about him?

Matthew Eddy: It’s an awesome start for Pirates 1B Stetson Allie, the converted righthanded reliever who is hitting .407 with six homers in 14 games for Low-A West Virginia. But just as we don’t advise jumping ship on Starling after two weeks, we want to see if Allie continues to produce before buying in completely. But you’re right that it would be impossible to get off to a better start.

Inclement postpones another Timber Rattlers game

Cold and windy conditions forces Wisconsin game at Clinton to be called off

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

CLINTON, IA - Eight. That would be eight.

Friday's game between the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and the Clinton LumberKings at Ashford University Field has been postponed due to inclement weather. A brisk wind made the afternoon temperatures in Clinton feel like it was just in the high 20s and snow flurries were flying, too. The weather was only going to get worse and conditions were less than ideal for baseball.

Friday's game was the eighth postponement of the 2013 baseball season for the Timber Rattlers. It was also the third straight day with no baseball for Wisconsin. The last time they were on the field for a game was Tuesday, April 16 when they had a doubleheader at Cedar Rapids.

Wisconsin and Clinton will make up Thursday's postponement in a doubleheader on Saturday at Ashford University Field. Game one begins at 4:00 PM.

Friday's weather forces Wisconsin and Clinton to play a doubleheader when the teams meet at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium later this half. That series will be held May 8 through May 10. The day of that doubleheader will be announced soon.

Final: Tennessee 8 Huntsville 1

Tennessee jumped on the Stars early, putting a 5 spot up in the 1st, and coasting to an 8-1 win Friday night. Arcenio Leon started and took the loss. He lasted just one inning tonight, allowing 5 earned runs on 4 hits, 1 walk, and 1 hit batter. Leon did deal with a blister issue in his last start. It's unclear if that affected his start tonight, or if he just had a bad game. A bright spot in the pitching department was the work from Alan Williams. The 23 year old left hander went 4 very strong innings in relief, allowing only 2 hits and 1 walk while striking out 5. Eric Marzec pitched 2 innings, allowing 2 unearned runs while striking out 3. Brian Garman worked an inning, allowing an unearned run. Lefty Thomas Keeling finished with a clean 9th, striking out 1.

FIELDING

E: Tosoni 2 (2, fielding, fielding), Walker, M (6, fielding), Garman (1, throw).

Jason Rogers drove in the Stars only run with an RBI single in the 7th. Kentrail Davis and Shawn Zarraga had the Stars other 2 hits.

Coming into tonights game, Jason Rogers had only struck out 4 times all year. He struck out 4 times tonight.

Team RISP: 2-for-15.

Final: Brevard County 1 Clearwater 13

Brevard County bitten by Threshers

Manatees suffer worst loss of year in 13-1 drubbing

By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees

Manatees catcher Cameron Garfield hit his fifth homer of the season on Friday night in a 13-1 loss to the Clearwater Threshers at Bright House Field. CLEARWATER, Fla. - Five runs in the first inning were more than enough for the Clearwater Threshers to wipe out the Brevard County Manatees on Friday night, but they went on to score another eight in the fifth inning to defeat the 'Tees 13-1 at Bright House Field. The game marked the largest margin of defeat for Brevard County this season.

Manatees starter Jed Bradley (1-1, 4.66) couldn't make it out of the first inning as he gave up a total of five runs before he was lifted with two outs on the board. Just two of those runs were earned though due to a pair of errors committed by Yadiel Rivera. Bradley walked three and yielded three hits and did not record a strikeout. Chad Pierce entered in relief and walked a man before getting out of the opening frame with the bases still loaded.

Cameron Garfield provided the lone bright spot for Brevard County (9-6), smashing his fifth home run of the season, which ties him for tops in the Florida State League, to lead off the second inning. His teammates threatened to add more behind him, though a Brandon Macias double and a Rivera walk provided no runs. Both runners advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch, but Threshers (7-8) southpaw Nick Hernandez (2-0, 2.12) stranded them there.

In the fifth inning, the Threshers sent twelve men to the plate, with eight of the nine men in the order scoring a run. Following a one-out walk, Clearwater rattled off five straight hits that included two doubles. A fielder's choice and another error allowed each of the next two batters to reach base before a two-run double capped off the scoring.

Each starter in the batting order for Clearwater recorded a base hit, with Jose Mojica's three leading the way. Hernandez's only run allowed was Garfield's shot and he gave up just four hits overall. He also struck out seven batters and walked only one in six innings of work.

Saturday night features the rubber match of the series, as Brevard County righty Drew Gagnon (0-1, 10.32) and Clearwater lefty Hoby Milner (0-2, 13.97) square off beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Pregame audio coverage on ManateesBaseball.com begins at 6:00 p.m. in the final game of the three-game set, before the Manatees move on to Tampa for a three-game set with the Yankees.

Brevard County Box Score

Cameron Garfield homered for the second night in a row. It was his fifth of the season, and fifth in the past ten games. He also picked off a runner which was great to see, as if he can be even average defensively, he could be a legit catching prospect for the Brewers. Chadwin Stang stayed hot at the top of the order with another two hit night. That's a seven game hitting streak for Stang. He has had multi-hit games in five of those seven. Brandon Macias had a double, while Nick Ramirez and Lance Roenicke each chipped in a single for the other Brevard hits.

Not a great night for Jed Bradley. He couldn't even get out of the first inning, allowing five runs on three hits and three walks. Bradley didn't get much help behind him as only two of the runs were earned following a couple of errors. Chad Pierce and Tyler Cravy didn't fare any better. Pierce gave up four runs in 3.2 innings and Cravy allowed four runs (two earned) in 1.2 innings. Tommy Toledo and Seth Harvey each pitched a scoreless inning.

Yadiel Rivera was charged with a pair of errors and Brandon Macias had one as well.

Stars Lose Finale of Season-Opening Homestand

By Alex Cohen / Huntsville Stars

To wrap up the second of two five-game series as part of a ten-game homestand, the Huntsville Stars lost to the Tennessee Smokies by a score of 8-1 on Friday night at Joe Davis Stadium.

Despite outhitting Tennessee by a 10-9 margin, Huntsville trailed big early, and simply could not recover off of Smokies starting pitcher Matt Loosen.

In the top of the first inning, Stars starting pitcher Arcenio Leon allowed five runs during a frame that the Smokies offense batted their entire starting lineup. The inning was highlighted by a two-run double by third baseman Christian Villanueva, RBI singles from first baseman Justin Bour and catcher Jay Fernandez and a sacrifice fly by shortstop Airismendy Alcantara.

Leon fell to 0-2 on the year with the loss, only lasting through the first inning on Friday, giving up those five runs on four hits while striking out two.

That was more than enough run support for the Smokies pitching staff, who held the Stars scoreless for the first six innings of the ballgame. Loosen went the first four innings, giving up just two hits while striking out eight batters in his first appearance of 2013. Righty A.J Morris (W, 1-0) earned the win in relief, giving up a run on three hits in three innings of work.

In the seventh inning, the Stars were able to get to Morris to score their only run of the contest. After Shawn Zarraga led off the frame with a pinch-hit single and second baseman Nick Shaw drew a walk, first baseman Jason Rogers drove Zarraga in with an RBI single later in the inning to put the Stars on the board.

For the Smokies, they tacked on two runs in the seventh inning on Stars righty Eric Marzec and one more unearned run in the eighth inning off of lefty Brian Garman to roll to their fourth straight victory.

In a losing effort, the Stars had four errors on the ballgame, setting a season-high in that category. They also ended their season-opening homestand with a 2-8 record, losing their last four games in the process.

On the bright side, Huntsville had some strong individual performances on Friday. Reliever Alan Williams threw four scoreless innings after replacing Leon to start the second inning, giving up just two hits while striking out five batters.

On offense, the Stars were paced by Shaw, who went 3-for-3 with three singles and walked twice to reach base in all five of his at-bats. Catcher Robinzon Diaz and shortstop Hector Gomez also each had two hits.

On Saturday, the Stars will hit the road for five games and head down I-65 to face off against the Birmingham Barons at the new Regions Field. Huntsville will send RHP Jimmy Nelson (2-0, 1.63 ERA) to right the ship against Barons LHP Wes Whisler (0-0, 4.50 ERA). First pitch is at 7:05 PM.

Sounds Silenced by I-Cubs; Lose 5-0

Nashville Limited To Three Hits In Second Shutout

Nashville Sounds

http://i.imgur.com/cDLLJCm.jpg

Johnny Hellweg (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Nashville Sounds held the Iowa Cubs to five hits Friday night at Principal Park, but free bases via seven walks, three passed balls, two hit by pitches, and one error committed by Nashville gave Iowa the 5-0 victory and the weather-abbreviated two-game series sweep.

The I-Cubs scored two runs in the first inning, as Nashville starting pitcher Johnny Hellweg (1-2) struggled to find control. Infielder Logan Watkins led off with the Cubs only hit of the inning, but Hellweg loaded the bases for Iowa by hitting Darnell McDonald with a pitch and walking Ian Stewart. The 6-foot-9 hurler proceeded to issue two consecutive bases-loaded walks to plate Iowa's two runs.

Seven of Hellweg's ten runs allowed over his last two starts have come in the first inning of his games.

The home team plated their third run on a pair of hits to lead off the fourth inning. Brian Bogusevic doubled to the wall in left field and was driven home by J.C. Boscan's slicing single into shallow right field to make it 3-0.

Hellweg took the loss, his second, surrendering four runs, three earned, on four hits across four innings of work. With 79 pitches on the night, Hellweg walked four Cubbies and fanned six.

Reliever Donovan Hand entered the game in the fifth inning with a man on first, inherited from Hellweg, and twirled two quick strikeouts. But a fielding error by Blake Davis, a walk to Bogusevic, and catcher Dayton Buller's passed ball allowed the run to score. The error by Davis ended the squad's error-free stretch at 43 1/3 innings dating back to April 12.

Iowa recorded one final run in the sixth inning with reliever Michael Olmsted on the hill for Nashville. Pinch hitter Tim Torres reached base on balls, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball before scoring on a single to centerfield by McDonald. Olmsted continued through two innings, retiring five Cubs on strikeouts. Rob Wooten pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning.

Offensively, only Scooter Gennett, Davis, and Dayton Buller recorded hits for the Sounds; each picking up a single. After ten consecutive games with an extra-base hit, the Sounds came up empty Friday, as five Iowa pitchers combined for the shutout, collecting 11 strikeouts. Starter Barret Loux (2-1) picked up the win.

The Sounds have dropped four straight games, marking their longest losing streak of the young season.

Having finished their first road trip 1-for-6, the Sounds return to Greer Stadium on Saturday to open the second homestand of the season at 6:35 p.m. against the Omaha Storm Chasers. Starting for Nashville will be RHP Mike Fiers, down from Milwaukee to make his 2013 Sounds debut, opposite Omaha's RHP Brian Sanches (1-0, 3.38).

Nashville PbP

The visitors' half of the 1st started off promisingly enough, but no joy. Unfortunately, it was also the best scoring opportunity the Sounds had on the night:

Nashville Top of the 1st

-Scooter Gennett singles on a line drive to center fielder Darnell McDonald.

-Blake Davis singles on a ground ball to right fielder Brian Bogusevic. Scooter Gennett to 2nd.

-Hunter Morris called out on strikes.

-Sean Halton strikes out swinging. Scooter Gennett steals (2) 3rd base. Blake Davis steals (2) 2nd base.

-Stephen Parker grounds out, first baseman Brad Nelson to pitcher Barret Loux.

As the game story noted, Hellweg struggled to find his command in the 1st. It it was so spotty that, despite only allowing one hit (a single), he walked in two runs:

Iowa Bottom of the 1st

-Logan Watkins singles on a line drive to center fielder Caleb Gindl.

-Darnell McDonald hit by pitch. Logan Watkins to 2nd.

-Ian Stewart walks. Logan Watkins to 3rd. Darnell McDonald to 2nd.

-Ty Wright pops out to second baseman Scooter Gennett.

-Brad Nelson walks. Logan Watkins scores. Darnell McDonald to 3rd. Ian Stewart to 2nd.

-Donnie Murphy walks. Darnell McDonald scores. Ian Stewart to 3rd. Brad Nelson to 2nd.

-Brian Bogusevic strikes out swinging.

-J. C. Boscan strikes out swinging.

Nashville only mustered six baserunners the rest of the way, two of whom reached base via errors.

Adam McCalvy:

Right-hander Mark Rogers breezed through an 11-pitch inning in an extended spring game Thursday and will pitch again Saturday. If that goes well, Rogers will begin a 30-day rehab assignment at Double-A Huntsville on Tuesday, Ash said. The former first-round Draft pick is on the DL trying to reclaim his lost velocity.

Tyrone Taylor tweet indicating Victor Roache will join the Rattlers Saturday (so he should make his formal pro debut before the weekend's out, weather permitting, of course)
