2013-04-19 Cubs (Samardzija) at Brewers (Estrada), 7:10 PM CDT

Turbo,

Henderson is more than capable of saving 49 games based on what I have seen. Just give him the lead heading into the 9th. Watch out Brewers fans we've found another good closer.

I like Henderson. I've liked him since last year. I remember telling my friend that the Brewers should have made Henderson the closer last year since everyone else was awful. Henderson is doing good so far. I think he should be the closer until he screws up a two or three times. He has earned a little bit of a leash. Henderson and Axford can both throw heat. What seperates the two is that Axford has a filthy curveball and slider. I don't know if Henderson has a filthy breaking ball. Axford at his best was elite. We have yet to see Henderson's best. However, judging by what we have seen so far from Henderson, Axford at his best is better. I will be very very very happy if Henderson ends up being a very good reliever. If he ends up being just as good or even better than Axford at his best, we will be in a good shape. The Brewers were elite in 2011 because they had an elite bullpen. Part of the reason that bullpen was elite was because our setup man and our closer were elite. If Henderson keeps getting better an Axford finds his mojo, we will have that nasty 1-2 punch again. The Canadian Combo has the potential to be great. We just have to hope that Axford continues to pitch well and Henderson keeps getting the job done. That will go a long way towards fixing the pen.

So Segura basically made 2 mistakes. 1) going back to the base with Braun there (he should have let them tag him once Braun reached 2b; and 2) he should have stayed on the base until he was sure who was out.

3) He also tried stealing third with two guys on and no one out.

When telling this story to my brother when he gets home ... for folklore's sake ... is it accurate to say Segura stole 1st and 2nd ... and unsuccessfully stole 2nd and 3rd in the same inning and the Brewers didn't score a run?

That is correct! Crazy.....HOPEFULLY we will never see anything like it again. But, with these guys, who knows. Wins are wins, right?!?

Because he knew Weeks was up and was going to strike out anyways.

I'm not positive that should be in blue....

Germany Schaefer

"He gained his greatest notoriety for "stealing first base," a maneuver that led to a rule change."

""The Prince," as he was often called because of his flashy showmanship on the field"

"Schaefer reportedly launched a long home run out of Philadelphia's Columbia Park and razzed the left-hander as he trotted around the bases. Carrying his bat with him, Schaefer pretended it was a gun, "shooting" Rube [Waddell] as he moved from bag to bag."

" during a steady rain he once appeared at the plate wearing rubber boots and a raincoat, and he once ventured to the plate sporting a fake black mustache. In both instances, his outlandish behavior reportedly resulted in his ejection. In addition, Schaefer was a master of the hidden-ball trick, which he performed in the 1907 World Series."

"On at least one occasion Schaefer stole first base. On August 4, 1911, in the bottom of the ninth, Schaefer stole second, hoping to draw a throw and allow teammate Clyde Milan, who was on third with the potential winning run, to steal home. White Sox catcher Fred Payne didn't fall for the gambit, however, so Schaefer, now on second, took his lead toward the first-base side of the bag and promptly stole first on a subsequent pitch. Sox manager Hugh Duffy came out to argue, and while Duffy jawed with umpire Tommy Connolly, Schaefer scampered for second again. This time Schaefer got caught in a rundown, as had been his intention, and Milan dashed for home, where he was nipped to end the inning. Schaefer and his teammates then argued unsuccessfully that the play should be nullified because the White Sox had ten players on the field, although Duffy hadn't been an active player since 1908. The official scorer credited Schaefer with only one stolen base, but he "had a perfect right to go from second back to first," umpire Connolly insisted after the game. It has been widely reported that Schaefer also stole first base on another occasion, against Cleveland in 1908, although the details usually given are contradictory and the incident is almost certainly a fabrication."

I believe gameday would say:

With rickie Weeks batting, Ryan Braun thrown out at 2B on jean Segura's attempt to steal 3B, Segura to 1B on the throw.....

Let's calm down on the Henderson talk. He was a wind change away from blowing it in Chicago his first save. I like him, but as people mentioned Axford in 2011 was one of the best for a season ever.

While that is true, let's not forget Maldonado made an error in that inning or the game would have been over long before that.

Henderson isn't better than the 2011 Axford, but he certainly could be very good if he keeps piching like this.

He did not steal first, that is illegal. He did attempt to steal 2nd base twice in an inning with only 1 PA (and not entering as a PH)

No.

He should not have let them tag him. He just should've stayed on 2nd, since the Brewers are far better off with Segura on 2nd than Braun.

On #2 your take is absolutely right though.

Remember this one?

Lyons, too, went wild—with disturbing frequency—on the base paths. To this day some people think that is how he got the nickname Psycho. His most memorable gaffe occurred in a game against the Milwaukee Brewers in June 1986. Boston trailed Milwaukee 7-5 in the ninth inning. Lyons was at second, Marty Barrett was at first, and Wade Boggs, who was hitting .400 at the time, was the batter. "I could hear Marty trying to whisper to me from 90 feet away, 'If you can get a good jump, go!' " Lyons recalls. "A double steal would have put the tying run on second. I didn't stop to think how bad the consequences would be if I got thrown out."

Lyons went on the next pitch, and, naturally, he was thrown out at third to end the game. "It was the worst I've ever felt in baseball. When I got to the locker room, McNamara yelled at me, 'Just keep walking right into my office.' He fined me $300. I didn't play much after that, and a little over three weeks later I was traded to Chicago. In a way, I'm glad I pulled my pants down. I'd just as soon be remembered for that as for being thrown out trying to steal third base."
