2013-04-19 Cubs (Samardzija) at Brewers (Estrada), 7:10 PM CDT

Marco shouldn't have never been out there for the 5th. There was a chance he could have imploded...

He was struggling against the 7 and 8 hitters. I didn't think throwing him back out there against the top of the order was a good idea. I was wrong, and I'm happy to admit it.

It could have very easily gone the other way, but I give Marco credit for toughing it out.

Yeah but long term you can't pull guys in the 4th, it will kill the bullpen. Plus as was mentioned we had a lead so we could have at least waited for a HR/RISP to pull him. Even if he is looking hittable he can eat up inning using the Jeff Suppan anti Willie Keeler technique and hope they "hit em where they are"

Feels kind of miraculous that we got 6 IP and 3 runs out of Estrada tonight. Not bad, considering he did not really have it tonight.

Probably a good thing we are playing the Cubs.

When you get 6 innings and 3 runs given up on a night like Marco was having, all I can do is think of how many guys (without naming names) the Crew has had in recent years that would have almost certainly not worked out of it. You don't want to do it all the time, but you need to do it at least some of the time if you want to be on the right side of the competitive curve.

Yup but he had some good timing with the DP balls tonight.

IP by starters are a big commodity in baseball and taking one out before the 6th inning is just horrible given how major league rosters are currently built. You have to do everything you can to get them through 5 innings so it should be extremely rare to go to a RP before then unless you have a SP throwing like 40 pitches in an inning or something. That isn't to say that major league rosters are optimal, there should be a long man who can go 3 innings in every pen and they should be allowed to go those 3 innings from time to time.

Without question. And it's very fair to argue the strategy there. No matter where those arguments lead, whoever is in there to play has to play, and it's nice to see a guy make it work.

I really help our offense wakes up. 4 hits in the first, 1 since.

Samardzija is a pitcher whose mechanics fall apart when his arm tires so I'm hoping we score a couple when they leave in for the 7th here.

Well, I think that can be said for most pitchers in MLB.

...and with that, AX gets out of it!

I'm assuming the roof is closed, as cold as it is in Milwaukee tonight. So it's not the cold affecting his velocity. I wonder what's going on with him.

It might be nothing more than very consciously trying not to overthrow.
