Gerrit Cole sure has been getting quite a bit of run to start this season.

Cole earns first Triple-A win of 2013

This irked me some:

MLB.com's No. 9 prospect had a one-hit shutout through six frames, but he came back out for the seventh despite already being at a season-high 86 pitches

86 pitches? So what? He's in AAA for goodness sake...

Subscriber piece on the Rays and cycling talent. I would agree that the Rays have quite a bit riding on Myers but I would nit pick and argue that Montgomery and Odorizzi are just as important to the Rays future as Archer, an interesting article none the less.

Rams and I had a quick discussion about 18 year old players in A ball earlier this season, this subscriber piece discusses the 2 17 year olds playing in full season ball now in the SAL. Mondesi is a Royals prospect and Tocci is from the Phillies, player links included in the article.

I agree with J.J. Cooper, no doubt tomorrow's likely Cingrani vs Fernandez pitching match-up is a must-see for prospect watchers. Subscriber piece as all call-up articles are.

STARS DROP “EDUCATION DAY” GAME TO SMOKIES

Alex Cohen, Huntsville Stars

With 3,000+ screaming kids in attendance for “Education Day” at Joe Davis Stadium late Wednesday morning, the Huntsville Stars dropped their sixth game in their last seven games, falling to the Tennessee Smokies by a score of 4-1.

What first starting as a pitchers duel between Stars starter Taylor Jungmann and Smokies starter Eric Jokisch turned into a one-sided affair with one swing of the at-bat.

After holding the Smokies scoreless for the first five innings of the game, Jungmann ran into trouble trying to finish out the sixth inning. With two outs, Jungmann walked both shortstop Arismendy Alcantra and first basemen Justin Bour. During the next at-bat, third basemen Christian Villanueva turned on a hanging breaking ball that just cleared the left-field wall and the outstretched arms of Stars outfielder T.J Mittlestaedt that gave Tennessee the lead for good.

Jungmann fell to 1-2 on the season with the loss, giving up those three runs on just two hits while striking out three and walking four.

Following a scoreless 2.1 innings pitched by Stars relievers Alan Williams and Eric Marzec, lefty Brian Garman gave up a run in the 9th inning on a RBI single by Smokies second basemen Jonathan Mota to make the score 4-0.

The Stars got their only run in the bottom half of the ninth, as an error by Alcantra at short on a sharp grounder from center fielder Brock Kjeldgaard scored right fielder Kentrail Davis to avoid the shutout. Huntsville had the potential game-tying run at the plate in the ninth as well, but Tennessee reliever Brian Schlitter got pinch-hitter Mike Walker to groundout to end the ballgame.

Jokish was the story for the Smokies, improving to 2-0 on the year by shutting out the Stars offense through six innings of work. The southpaw only gave up three hits and struck out seven batters without walking anyone in the process.

On offense, the Stars were only able to piece together four hits, one of them from shortstop Jeff Bianchi, who played his first full game with the Stars since being assigned to Huntsville on a MLB rehab stint. The Brewers utility infielder went 1-for-3 with a walk, and now 4-for-10 in four games with the Stars.

Besides Bianchi, third basemen Shea Vucinich, catcher Shawn Zarraga and pinch-hitter Adam Weisenburger were the only others to have a hit.

The Stars and Smokies will play game four of a five-game series at Joe Davis Stadium on Thursday. Huntsville will send RHP Andy Moye (1-1, 5.19 ERA) to the bump to square off against Tennessee RHP Kyle Hendricks (1-1, 4.09 ERA). First pitch is at the regular time of 6:43 PM.

After wrapping up their five-game series and ten game homestand against the Smokies on Friday, the Stars will immediately hit the road for five games against the Birmingham Barons.

Final: Tennessee 4 Huntsville 1

One elevated pitch turned out to be too much today as Tennessee took game 3 of the series 4-1. Stars starter Taylor Jungmann was cruising today through 5 2/3 innings. But a couple of walks and a hanging breaking ball that Christian Villanueva didn't miss turned a scoreless pitchers duel into a 3-0 deficit the Stars couldn't overcome. Jungmann, who struggled in his last start, had his game going today. During the broadcast, Alex Cohen mentioned that he was in the 91-92 range into the 6th. Jungmann finished with a line of 3 runs, all earned, on 2 hits, 4 walks, 1 costly home run, and 3 strikeouts.

Huntsville Box Score

Not a lot to see here. The Stars were limited to 4 singles by Jeff Bianchi, Shea Vucinich, Shawn Zarraga, and Adam Weisenburger. Jason Rogers saw his 8 game hitting streak come to an end. As WV Brew noted earlier in the Link Report, it was mentioned during the broadcast that Rogers has only struck out 3 times now in 52 plate appearances in his 1st go at AA pitching. Well done "Bones"!!

Rough day for Zarraga and Stars pitchers with baserunners:

BASERUNNING

SB: Alcantara 4 (6, 2nd base off Jungmann/Zarraga, 2nd base off Jungmann/Zarraga, 2nd base off Jungmann/Zarraga, 2nd base off Marzec/Zarraga), Ha (5, 2nd base off Garman/Zarraga).

One positive note out of today's game was that Bianchi played the entire game for the 1st time on his rehabilitation assignment.

Huntsville Play By Play

The only Stars run today was scored on an error in the 9th.

Huntsville Bottom of the 9th

Pitching Change: Brian Schlitter replaces Zach Rosscup, batting 9th, replacing Jae-Hoon Ha.

T. J. Mittelstaedt flies out to left fielder Rubi Silva.

Jeff Bianchi walks.

With Kentrail Davis batting, Jeff Bianchi advances to 2nd on defensive indifference.

Kentrail Davis walks.

Jason Rogers grounds into a force out, fielded by third baseman Christian Villanueva. Jeff Bianchi out at 3rd. Kentrail Davis to 2nd. Jason Rogers to 1st.

Brock Kjeldgaard reaches on a fielding error by shortstop Arismendy Alcantara. Kentrail Davis scores. Jason Rogers to 3rd.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Mike Walker replaces Shea Vucinich.

Mike Walker grounds into a force out, fielded by second baseman Jonathan Mota. Brock Kjeldgaard out at 2nd.

Game 4 is tomorrow night. Andy Moye will be on the hill for the Stars. Game time is 6:43 Central at "The Joe".

Final: Brevard County 3 Lakeland 0

Brevard strikes early, blanks Lakeland

Goforth and Williams combine for shutout over Flying Tigers

By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees

LAKELAND, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees were led by great pitching and defense in a 3-0 shutout win over the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Wednesday Night at Joker Marchant Stadium.

The Manatees (8-5) scored all three of their runs in the first three innings. In the opening frame, Chadwin Stang led off the ballgame with a single to right-center field. After two quick outs, Stang was on second when Cameron Garfield laced an RBI single to center to give the 'Tees a 1-0 lead.

Brandon Macias ripped a two-run double into the left-center field gap in the top of the third that scored both Nick Ramirez and Garfield and ultimately commence the scoring for the evening.

'Tees starting pitcher David Goforth (1-1, 2.35) threw 5.1 shutout innings and earned the victory. He allowed just three hits and two walks on the evening. Goforth was also the beneficiary of two 4-6-3 double play balls that killed Lakeland rallies in both third and fifth innings.

Mark Williams was summoned from the bullpen with two men on and one out in the sixth inning. He struck out both Brandon Loy and Eugenio Suarez to leave both inherited runners stranded.

Williams pitched 3.2 innings and did not allow a run to close out the game and record his first save of the year. He allowed just two hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out six . The Flying Tigers (4-9) did not bring the tying run to the plate against Williams over the final three innings.

The Manatees took two of three from Lakeland in the series. Brevard County has won three straight series and seven out of their last nine games. The Flying Tigers meanwhile have lost seven of their last nine games.

Brevard County will continue their seven-game road trip by opening up a three-game series against the Clearwater Threshers (6-7) on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. at Bright House Field.

Jacob Barnes (1-0, 2.57) will get the call for the Manatees. He will be opposed by Colin Kleven (0-2, 18.90) for Clearwater, who gave up nine runs into 2.2 innings against the 'Tees on Saturday night.

Great pitching performance from the David Goforth / Mark Williams tandem. They combined to shut out Lakeland on five hits. Goforth allowed just three hits over 5.1 innings. Williams surrendered just two in the final 3.2 innings. Williams struck out six without giving up a walk.

Brandon Macias broke out of his season opening slump, going 3-4 with a double and two RBI. Chadwin Stang contributed a pair of singles. Cameron Garfield was on base twice with a single and a walk. Nick Ramirez and Dionis Hinojosa each had a base hit. Hinojosa also swiped his third base in as many attempts since his promotion.
