Link Report for Tue. 4/9 -- Thornburg and Bradley, Act Two

Jeff Hem on Thornburg:

After struggling early, Tyler Thornburg starting to find it. Saw min. in 3rd and struck out side in 4th. Sounds down, 3-1, mid 4.

Tyler just worked a 1-2-3 5th, on three groundball outs. Sitting at 81 pitches, so his night may be over (or very close to it).

EDIT: Yep, that was it for Thornburg. Final line: 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R/ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 81 TP (52 strikes), 7:1 GO:FO. Bad first two innings, near-spotless final three.

Final: Brevard County 3 Lakeland 1

After dropping three in a row to Daytona, Brevard got back in the win column with a 3-1 victory on Tuesday night, thanks to a nice bounce back outing from Jed Bradley and the Manatees pitching staff.

Brevard County got on the board first in the top of the fourth inning, scoring a pair of runs. Nick Ramirez had a one out triple and Cameron Garfield followed with a double to score Ramirez. Greg Hopkins then added a clutch two out single to center to score Garfield.

Bradley worked five strong innings to pick up the win, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out six. Eric Marzec relieved Bradley in the sixth, and retired all six batters he faced over two innings.

The Manatees tacked on an insurance run in the seventh when Lance Roenicke doubled to score Cody Hawn, who had started the inning with a base hit.

Stephen Peterson followed with a 1-2-3 eighth and Seth Harvey shut down Lakeland in the ninth to earn his second save.

Brevard County Box Score

The BC pitching staff was fantastic tonight, allowing just one run on five hits. Eric Marzec and Stephen Peterson continued their strong starts to the season and Jed Bradley threw more like the pitcher Brewers fans have been hoping for. It's always hard to tell without seeing the game, but listening on the internet it didn't even sound like the run he gave up was all that bad, as the "double" that put runners on second and third could have possibly been caught but the outfielder pulled up and then the ball got by him. So given the circumstances, Bradley did a good job to limit the damage to just that one run.

Still not much offense out of the Brevard lineup, as they too managed just five hits, but it was enough to get the job done. Lance Roenicke was 1-3 with a double and an RBI. Greg Hopkins went 1-2 with a sacrifice. Cody Hawn singled, Cameron Garfield doubled, and Nick Ramirez tripled for the other Manatees hits. Chadwin Stang drew the lone walk of the night while the Sea Cows racked up another nine strikeouts. Roenicke was also thrown out attempting to steal a base. John Dishon had a throwing error.

Brevard County Play-By-Play

The Manatees got all the offense they would need in the fourth.

Brevard County Top of the 4th

Chadwin Stang grounds out, pitcher Kevin Eichhorn to first baseman Aaron Westlake.

Nick Ramirez triples (1) on a fly ball to center fielder Chad Wright.

Defensive Substitution: Jason Krizan replaces right fielder Steven Moya, batting 3rd, playing right field.

Cameron Garfield doubles (2) on a fly ball to left fielder Jeff McVaney. Nick Ramirez scores.

Cody Hawn strikes out swinging.

Gregory Hopkins singles on a fly ball to center fielder Chad Wright. Cameron Garfield scores.

Yadiel Rivera pops out to third baseman Jason King in foul territory.

Nashville's Gindl Powers Offense; Finishes A Triple Shy Of Cycle

Nashville Sounds

Caleb Gindl (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Despite rallying back from a three-run deficit, the Nashville Sounds came up short to the visiting Oklahoma City RedHawks Tuesday night at Greer Stadium by the score of 5-3.

Trailing 3-0 early, the Sounds battled back to knot it up, scoring a run in the third, sixth and seventh innings. Leading the charge was Caleb Gindl, going three-for-five on the night, a triple shy of the cycle, and getting the Sounds on the board with a home run to right field in the third.

The second Nashville run came in the sixth, as Sounds third baseman Stephen Parker knocked a two-out double to the left-field wall. The infielder was able to convert the extra-base knock into a run during the next play thanks to a throwing error from third baseman Jimmy Paredes.

In the following frame, Gindl's two-out ground rule double to the left-field corner set the stage for the team's final run. Shortstop Blake Davis brought Gindl around to score with a line-drive single into right-center. But the 3-3 tie did not last long as the RedHawks answered with two runs of their own in the eighth.

Starting his second inning of relief work, Jim Hoey allowed two singles to put runners on the corners, which ended his night. Chris Jakubauskas entered to preserve the tie, but proceeded to allow three consecutive hits to give Oklahoma City the final two-run advantage. The first run was charged to Hoey (0-1), who received the loss.

After being shut out Monday by Sounds pitching, the RedHawks wasted no time before jumping on starting pitcher Tyler Thornburg for a pair of runs in the first inning. Centerfielder Robbie Grossman singled to right field and advanced to second on the first of Thornburg's three walks. Brandon Laird cleared the bases with a double to the right-field wall to give Oklahoma City the initial lead.

The RedHawks tacked on another run in the second inning when left fielder Trevor Crowe hit a two-out single past first baseman Hunter Morris to score Che-Hsuan Lin from second, who singled to lead off the inning.

Thornburg left the game as the pitcher of record, allowing three runs on five hits in five innings of work, but kept his record clean with the rally. The 24-year-old collected five strikeouts, before Travis Webb stepped to the hill for Nashville. Webb turned in a hitless inning of relief in his third appearance of the season.

The Sounds will look to reclaim the series lead against the Oklahoma City RedHawks Wednesday at Greer Stadium in game three of the four-game set, beginning Monday night at 7:05 p.m. Starting on the hill for the Sounds will be RHP Hiram Burgos (0-0, 0.00) against the RedHawks RHP Jarred Cosart (0-0, 2.25).

Nashville Box

Gindl: 3-5, 2B, HR, RBI

Davis: 1-3

Sean Halton: 2-4

Parker: 2-4, 2B

Hainley Statia: 1-4

Anderson De La Rosa: 1-4, 1/1 CS

Joey Paciorek: 1-4

31 of Thornburg's 81 pitches tonight came in the 1st inning (his high for an inning after that was 14). This was the 'rough early, but then settled in' type of performance that, had he not been on what looked to be an 80-85 pitch count limit, might have seen him bounce back from a rough 1st & give the team 6 or 7 solid innings. From the 3rd inning through the 5th he only allowed one baserunner, and appeared to really recover his command. In the same stretch, he notched five of his seven groundouts & three of his five strikeouts. Here's to hoping for better in his next outing, but not much to be concerned about in this one imo.

[pre]Thornburg: 5 IP 5 H 3 R/ER 3 BB 5 K 81 TP (52 strikes) 7:1 GO:FO

Webb: 1 IP 0 H 0 R/ER 0 BB 1 K

Jakubauskus: 1.2 IP 3 H 1 R/ER 1 BB 1 K[/pre]

-Jonathan Villar grounds out to first baseman Hunter Morris.

After Nashville had rallied back to tie the game, the backbreaker came in the 8th. However, some nice defense actually limited the damage & kept the Sounds within striking distance:

Sounds lose player to Brewers in first week

by Nick Cole, The Tennessean

To watch players come and go is to be expected at the Triple-A level, but the Sounds lost what they considered to be a key newcomer after just two games with the team.

“It’s a part of the game,” Sounds manager Mike Guerrero said. “That’s why we are here. That’s the purpose of our Triple-A ballclub is to prepare guys to help our big league club.”

After spending all of 2012 with Double-A Huntsville, Josh Prince was in his second day on the job in Triple-A when a big league opportunity came knocking.

An injury to Brewers third baseman Aramis Ramirez on Friday forced the All-Star to the 15-day disabled list and left Milwaukee in need of a player to fill in on the 25-man roster.

“They needed a utility guy that could play multiple positions,” Guerrero said. “Hopefully he can perform and help the major league club out.”

Prince, a versatile fielder who can play all three outfield positions as well as shortstop and third base, proved to be the right fit for that role despite his lack of Triple-A experience.

The 25-year-old collected his first major league hit Sunday — a ground-rule double off Diamondbacks closer J.J. Putz to start a game-tying rally in the bottom of the ninth for the Brewers.

The Sounds replaced Prince with catcher and infielder Joey Paciorek. The son of former Milwaukee outfielder Jim Paciorek is in his seventh professional season and had not played beyond advanced-A ball before the promotion.

Lalli gone: Guerrero also received news on Monday that catcher Blake Lalli had been promoted by Milwaukee to replace injured pitcher Chris Narveson on its 25-man roster.

Lalli spent seven seasons in the Cubs system and had a short stint in the A’s organization before his arrival in Brewers camp this spring.

He appeared in just three games with the Sounds, going 1-for-7 in the series against New Orleans.

This will be Lalli’s second stint in the major leagues after appearing in six games and collecting two hits for Chicago last season.

Veteran infielder Ozzie Chavez will replace Lalli on the Sounds roster.

Slow offensive start: Through Monday, the Sounds ranked last in the Pacific Coast League with a .188 batting average.

Outfielder Caleb Gindl started the season in an 0-for-17 slump before collecting his first hit of the season on Monday night against Oklahoma City.

Third baseman Stephen Parker also got off to a slow start, logging just one hit in his first 17 plate appearances.

Brevard's pitching shines in win at Lakeland

Manatees snap three-game skid with 3-1 victory

By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees

LAKELAND, Fla. - A quartet of pitchers held the defending Florida State League champions in check as the Brevard County Manatees defeated the Lakeland Flying Tigers 3-1 on Tuesday night at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland.

The Manatees (2-3) snapped the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning, with a Nick Ramirez triple followed by a Cameron Garfield double that plated Ramirez. Garfield would later score in the inning when Greg Hopkins drove him in with a two-out single.

Lakeland (2-3) had runners on second and third with nobody out in the home half of the fourth, but Brevard County starting pitcher Jed Bradley (1-0, 3.00) got out of the inning by allowing just one run to cross the plate.

In all, Bradley went five innings and surrendered four hits and three walks, while fanning six men and earned credit for the win thanks to a near-perfect bullpen.

Eric Marzec used just 18 pitches to plow through six batters in two innings, before Stephen Peterson recorded two strikeouts in an inning of work. Seth Harvey shut the door in the ninth and picked up his second save of the season.

Lance Roenicke doubled home Cody Hawn in the seventh to give the Manatees an insurance run.

Brevard County and Lakeland will play the second game of a three-game set on Wednesday at 6:30 PM (5:30 Central) at Joker Marchant Stadium. The two teams will then travel to Space Coast Stadium in Viera for the series finale on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Drew Gagnon (0-1, 15.00) will get the ball for the 'Tees. In his last two starts of 2012, which were against the Flying Tigers, Gagnon went 1-0 with a 0.75 ERA as he allowed one earned run in 12 innings of work with 12 strikeouts. Lakeland will send Thomas Collier (0-0, 4.50) to the mound. Collier was a 2012 Midwest League mid-season All-Star.

Wednesday's game will be broadcast live on ManateesBaseball.com with the pre-game show starting at 6:00 PM (5:00 Central).
