Link Report for Sun. 4/7

Final: Daytona 9 Brevard County 0

Brevard County Box Score

Rough day all around for the Manatees. David Goforth was one of the few bright spots. He started and worked five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. He struck out three and only walked one batter. But the bullpen really struggled, giving up nine runs over the final four innings. Kevin Shackelford allowed four runs in just a third of an inning. Chad Pierce gave up one run despite not allowing a hit. He did walk three batters. As did Seth Harvey who gave up three runs in two-thirds of an inning.

The offense was once again almost non-existent for BC. Yadiel Rivera had half of the Brevard hits on the day, going 2 for 4. Greg Hopkins and John Dishon each had a base hit, but that was about it. Chadwin Stang stole his third base of the season after drawing the teams only walk. Hopkins and Lance Roenicke each committed an error and Daytona stole another four bases.

Manatees shutout at home again by Cubs

Brevard yet to score a run in Viera as they fall 9-0 to Daytona

By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - Following an 8-0 loss in the home opener, the Brevard County Manatees were blanked 9-0 on their home turf by the Daytona Cubs on Sunday evening at Space Coast Stadium in Viera.

The first five innings blew by with only minor threats in the second for both teams. Daytona (3-1) loaded the bases with nobody out in the second inning, but 'Tees (1-3) starter David Goforth induced a shallow fly to center and a 4-6-3 double play to get out of the jam. In the bottom half of the second, consecutive errors had runners on the corners with two outs but P.J. Francescon notched his second strikeout of the inning to close out the scoring opportunity.

Francescon matched Starling Peralta's effort from Friday night, carrying a no-hitter into the fifth. Yadiel Rivera was again the man to break it up, this time on a bunt single. The starter ended up only allowing that hit plus one walk, striking out six for the win as he finally got the run support he needed in the sixth.

After Kevin Shackelford came on in relief of Goforth and sat Tim Saunders down looking, he surrendered five straight hits including a Jorge Soler home run and a John Andreoli triple.

A line of relievers followed with Chad Pierce surrendering a run on three walks and no hits. Micah Gibbs took Tommy Toledo deep over the right field foul pole in the eighth inning and Seth Harvey surrendered three runs in the ninth.

The best chance for the Brevard County's bats came in the seventh, when the bases were loaded with one out. Daytona reliever Yeiper Castillo would get out of the jam as he struck out Chad Stang and forced Brandon Macias to fly out to right.

David Goforth had a stellar Manatees debut, allowing just two hits and a walk with three strikeouts in five scoreless innings.

With a league-wide off day on Monday, the Manatees won't return to the field until they travel to Joker Marchant Stadium to take on the Lakeland Flying Tigers (2-2) on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. Southpaw Jed Bradley (0-0, 4.50) will make his second start of the season for the 'Tees against right-hander Kevin Eichhorn for Lakeland.

Both Tuesday's game and Wednesday's game against the Flying Tigers will be broadcast on ManateesBaseball.com, with pregame coverage starting 30 minutes before first pitch.

Noche, that is right, typically seeds, gum, etc. At the MLB level it often falls on the rookie to take the bag out to the bullpen. Sometimes it is just a normal bag, but more often than not it is something along the lines of a pink My Little Pony bag.

Stars, Lookouts Split Sunday Doubleheader

Alex Cohen, Huntsville Stars

In the first double dip for either team in 2013, the Huntsville Stars lost game one 8-0 and won game two 3-1 against the Chattanooga Lookouts on Sunday afternoon at AT&T Park.

Game one featured a lack of offense from a Stars team who churned out 22 combined hits and 12 combined runs the two previous contests, as they were shutout and held to just five hits. Lookouts starter Andres Santiago had his way with the Huntsville bats, pitching five shutout innings while giving up just three hits to cruise to a win in his first start of the season. Relieving Santiago in the sixth inning, lefty Kelvin De La Cruz went the rest of the way for Chattanooga, pitching two scoreless innings to finish off the Lookouts first win of the season.

On offense, the Lookouts took the lead for good early in the first inning off of Stars starter Ariel Pena on an RBI single from right fielder Yasiel Puig. For insurance purposes, Chattanooga scored six runs in the fourth inning off of Pena and reliever R.J Seidel, highlighted by a three-run home run by left fielder Joc Peterson, a two-run single by second basemen Rafael Ynoa and an RBI double by first basemen Chris Jacobs.

The Lookouts scored their lone other run in the sixth inning on another RBI single by Puig.

For the Stars, their offense was paced by center fielder Rene Tosoni, who had two of the Stars' five hits. In addition to Tosoni, Kentrail Davis recored a hit for his third straight game with a double in the second inning while catcher Robinson Diaz and second basemen Shea Vucinich each had a single.

In game two, the Stars clinched the series victory behind a tremendous performance by starting pitcher Andy Moye. The 25-year-old righty combined with reliever Greg Holle to one-hit the Lookouts in his Double-A debut.

After giving up a solo homer to Peterson to begin his outing, Moye did not give up a hit the rest of the way as he went six strong innings, striking out four batters in the process while walking just one. Holle then retired the Lookouts in order in the seventh, getting left fielder Bobby Coyle to ground out to notch his first save of the season and finalize the one-hitter.

On offense, the Stars got all the run support they needed in the first inning. After a leadoff walk by shortstop Nick Shaw, Vucinich doubled off Lookouts starter Rob Rassmussen to put runners at second and third. Following a walk by first baseman Jason Rogers, an RBI infield single by right fielder Davis put Huntsville on the board. Later in the inning, a long sacrifice fly by left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard scored Vucinich to put the Stars up 2-0.

Huntsville got their extra insurance run in the seventh inning on a solo homer by third basemen T.J Mittelstaedt.

The Stars and Lookouts will finish their five-game 2013 season opening series on Monday night. Huntsville will send RHP Arcenio Leon (3-2, 4.38 ERA ERA w/HSV in 2012) to the bump to square off against Chattanooga LHP Onelki Garcia (0-0, 0.00 ERA w/RC in 2012). First pitch is at 6:15 CT.

Following the Series against Chattanooga, the Stars will open up their home slate against the Jacksonville Suns on April 10th for a five-game series immediately followed by a five games against the Tennessee Smokies.
