NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Right-hander Johnny Hellweg turned in an impressive Triple-A debut, hurling five scoreless frames and combining with a pair of relievers on a four-hit shutout in the Nashville Sounds' 6-0 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs on Saturday evening at Greer Stadium.

Hellweg (1-0) allowed only two hits in his five frames, striking out three batters and walking one in his 69-pitch effort. The fireballer retired the first 11 batters in succession before Bryan Petersen doubled with two outs in the top of the fourth inning.

Chris Jakubauskas and Travis Webb followed Hellweg with a pair of scoreless innings apiece to close out the shutout. Both hurlers made their Sounds debuts in the contest.

Offensively, Scooter Gennett continued his strong start to the season with a 3-for-4 effort, Sean Halton also went 3-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs, and Cole Garner went 2-for-4 with a homer and a double to lead a nine-hit attack.

The Sounds struck first, plating an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning against Z's starter Jacob Turner. Gennett led off the frame with a double to right-center, advanced to third when shortstop Wilson Valdez mishandled a Caleb Gindl grounder, and scored on Halton's RBI single through the left side of the infield.

Garner doubled the Nashville lead in the second when he led off with his first homer of the year, a blast to left-center on the first offering he saw from Turner.

Nashville stretched the lead to a comfortable 6-0 margin by plating four runs with two outs against Turner in the third.

After Gennett singled and stole second, Halton delivered his second knock in a run-scoring situation, plating the second baseman with a two-out single to left. After Stephen Parker drew a walk, Garner upped the Sounds' lead to 4-0 with an RBI ground-rule double that hopped over the right-center wall. Blake Davis followed with his first hit of the season, a two-run single to right.

Turner (0-1) absorbed the loss for the Z's after giving up six runs (five earned) on seven hits over four frames in his season debut.

The Sounds and Zephyrs wrap up their season-opening four-game set with a 2:05 p.m. matinee on Sunday afternoon. Left-hander Zach Kroenke will make his debut for Nashville when he toes the slab to face New Orleans right-hander Mitch Talbot.

The Sounds will don their camouflage jerseys for the first time this season as a salute to all members of the armed forces on Military Sunday.

I won't post them all here, but do yourself a favor and read through Hellweg's first four innings. The only adjective that comes to mind for me is "buzzsaw." He labored in the 5th, but even then was able to pitch out of trouble.

-Scooter Gennett doubles (1) on a line drive to center fielder Kevin Mattison.

-Stephen Parker grounds into a double play, shortstop Wilson Valdez to first baseman Ben Lasater. Sean Halton out at 2nd.

-Cole Garner homers (1) on a line drive to left center field.

Manatees doubled up by Cubs

Three-run fourth for Daytona dooms 'Tees in 4-2 loss

By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - In another close game at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, it was the home team that got the win as the Brevard County Manatees fell 4-2 to the Daytona Cubs on Saturday night.

The fourth inning saw the Cubs (2-1) take a walk and a hit by pitch to start things out, then a sneaky bunt by John Andreoli forced a throwing error by Brandon Macias. Jorge Soler scored on the miscue, with Stephen Bruno coming home on a groundout. Micah Gibbs capped off the frame with an RBI single.

Soler battled a stiff wind and smashed his first home run of the season over the left field wall, extending Daytona's lead to 4-2 in the seventh inning.

Despite getting on the board early with single runs in each of the second and third innings, the Manatees' (1-2) bats couldn't do enough for their second road win in as many tries. A two-out rally in the ninth failed to push across any runs. Chad Stang extended his season-opening hitting streak to three games and Macias took a ball off the back to put runners on first and second, but Nick Ramirez went down on a big swing to close out any hope of a comeback.

Brevard County starting pitcher Brooks Hall (0-1, 4.50) gave up three runs - two of them earned - on four hits and two walks, while fanning four in four innings. Jacob Barnes piggybacked on the start and only threw two innings, allowing three hits and two walks but he was able to get himself out of trouble twice with runners on the corners and bases loaded situations.

Three Daytona pitchers shared the load, with starter Austin Kirk being charged with two runs, surrendering four hits and two walks while also fanning two. He took the no-decision as Yao-Lin Wang (1-0, 0.00) came out of the bullpen with three one-hit frames, walking one and sitting down two batters on strikeouts. Frank Del Valle got the three-inning save with an impressive six strikeouts, also only allowing just one hit and one walk.

The Manatees and Cubs return to Space Coast Stadium for a 5:05 PM (4:05 Central) contest to close the season opening series on Sunday evening. Live audio will be started on ManateesBaseball.com and the game will be joined in progress on AM 1300 WMEL following the conclusion of the Tampa Bay Rays broadcast.

David Goforth (10-8, 4.66 in 2012) will make his 'Tees debut on the hill, while P.J. Francescon (8-7, 3.01 in 2012) will toe the rubber for Daytona.

Jungmann Hurls Stars to Second Straight Victory

Alex Cohen, Huntsville Stars

In his Double-A debut, highly-touted Brewers pitching prospect Taylor Jungmann gave up just a run on two hits through five innings of work to help lead the Stars to a 5-4 victory on Saturday night at AT&T Field.

The only run the 23-year-old righty gave up was an RBI single to Lookouts first basemen J.T Wise in the first inning. Following the rocky initial frame, Jungmann settled down and retired 12 of the last 13 batters he faced to improve to 1-0 on the season, including a 4th inning where he struck out the side.

Offensively speaking, the Stars put Jungmann in line for the win in the third inning. Third baseman Mike Walker and catcher Adam Weiseburger began the frame by reaching base via a walk and single respectively off of Lookouts starter Chris Reed. After a walk drawn by shortstop Nick Shaw loaded the bases, first baseman Jason Rogers singled home Walker to tie the game up at one. The next at-bat, right fielder Kentrail Davis brought home Shaw and Rogers with a two-run single to put the Stars up by two. Davis scored later in the inning on an RBI single by left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard to make the score 4-1.

In the fifth inning, the Stars added their insurance run when Shaw reached base on an error by Lookouts second basemen Rafael Ynoa to begin the frame. Shaw then advanced to third on a single by Kjeldgaard and scored on a wild pitch by Chattanooga reliever Hector Nelo to give the Huntsville pitching staff all the run support they needed.

As the game went on, the Lookouts began to chip away at the Stars' lead. In the seventh inning, a two-run double by pinch-hitter C.J Retherford off of Stars lefty Thomas Keeling cut the Huntsville lead in half. Then, in the ninth inning, Lookouts right fielder Yasiel Puig greeted closer Casey Medlen with a mammoth home run well over the left-field wall to make the score 5-4.

Fortunately for the Stars, Medlen settled down. The 23-year-old righty retired the next two batters he faced and stranded the potential game-tying run on first by striking out pinch-hitter Blake Smith to end the game. The save for Medlen was his second in as many games.

In addition to Jungmann and Medlen, Huntsville reliever Santo Manzanillo threw two scoreless innings of relief, giving up just one hit and striking out one in the process.

Once again, the Stars offense was paced by the middle of the order, as Davis led the way with three hits (all singles) at the dish. Both Kjeldgaard and Rogers had their second multi-hit game in as many nights, each going 2-for-5 with an RBI single apiece.

Huntsville has now won their first two games to begin the 2013 season.

The Stars and Lookouts will play a doubleheader on Sunday, in which the first of two, seven-inning games will begin at 1:15 CT. Huntsville will send RHP Ariel Pena (0-2, 7.24 ERA w/HSV in 2012) to the bump for game one and follow that up with RHP Andy Moye (5-3, 5.13 ERA) for game two.

Following the Series against Chattanooga, the Stars will open up their home slate against the Jacksonville Suns on April 10th for a five-game series immediately followed by a five games against the Tennessee Smokies.
