Do any of you collect baseball cards of the Brewers?

The stache
I have a collection of Brewer cards collecting dust in my closet. At one point in time, I had all the regular issue cards from Topps, Fleer, Donruss etc. from the 1969 Pilots on plus a ton of whatever oddball stuff I could find. Then in the early 90's, each company started coming out with a gazillion sets so I stopped. Next to the Yount RC, this one is probably my favorite Brewer card of all time:

That is great! This link includes some video footage of the Bazooka Bubble Gum Blowing Championship.

Thanks for the link! Some pretty cool shots of a 20 ish Robin Yount blowing bubbles (while wearing a Schlitz t-shirt none the less) at the end of the video.

Why don't some of you guys ever post over in the trading post?! We'd love to have you over there!!!! For a long time all I collected was signed baseballs from HOFers and Brewers. Then I got really big into bobbleheads (which I'm starting to lose interest in). Got back into collecting cards about 18 months ago. I'm working on collecting all the Milwaukee Braves in a PSA 6 or 7. I was buying raw and submitting, though I think it's probably cheaper to buy them already graded at this point. I've completed 1954 Bowman, 1955 Bowman, 1955 Topps, and am one card short of 1953 Topps and 1954 Topps. I'll let you guess which card I'm short in the 54 set ;)

I've been buying Brewers team sets as they pop up, but I haven't gone all out in finding them.

I bought two boxes of 2013 Topps and they were pretty fun to rip, I got a few good cards, but I probably didn't break even on them. At about the same time I got 10 packs of the 2013 Topps Turkey, and those were a BLAST to rip. I pulled a 1/10 Weeks signed card and two 1/630 (?) Fiers signed. I'm a few cards short of completing that set and I've really enjoyed getting those. After that though, the Heritage set came out, and that's just a whole new thing (and those cards look pretty ugly anyway).

What I plan on starting to do is getting every Brewers player signed on their first true Brewers card through the mail. Hoping for mostly Topps, but there's some guys that played 12 games in their career that have a card out, and it's Fleer or Donruss. It'd be great to have a Yount 2008 1/1 refractor game used patch/bat signed something or other, but it'd be even better to have his signature on his rookie card. Even if the card would grade at a 4. This will project will take a long time, as there's close to 700 guys, but I think it'll be relatively cheap and a lot of fun.

I'll post some scans of my favorite cards soon.

'stache, thanks for the info. I kind of figured it was like that but I wasn't sure. Good to know that I will NEVER be able to get into that kind of hobby that you are in, as there is no way on God's Green Earth that I would be able to afford more than one card per calendar year.

I know that they have "retail" packs and "hobby" packs and such. What is the difference between the two? And can you even get those 1/1 cards (or whatever ratio) in packs anymore? Is it even possible? I see the "odds" that they put on the wrappers on some packs but does it even happen when most of them seem to be up on ebay or whatever from dealers who just ripped open tons of packs just for those very special cards?

In other words, if I went to Walmart, for example, and bought one pack of cards a day for a year, would I EVER get anything worth anything?

pitchleague,

Hobby packs are sold exclusively at card shops, or from authorized dealers that sell online (Blowout Cards, as an example). Retail boxes are sold at Wal Mart, Target, grocery stores, etc.

There used to be more of a dividing line between the two, but that is closing. There have been exclusives for both retail and hobby, but typically the hobby boxes were better: somewhat better odds of getting a hit in a hobby box, better autographs (on card vs on sticker), additional refractor cards, and even more cards per pack were possibilities. But yes, you can still get cards of value in retail. I know somebody that got a Bryce Harper autograph from a blaster he bought at Wal Mart. The card goes for $250-300 now.

Many of the high dollar cards you see on Ebay will come from people that just buy cases of the stuff, and get lucky because they increase their odds. My answer to that? Let all these guys spend a lot of money to buy a lot of cards, spending hour after hour ripping packs, placing them in top loaders and one touches, scanning them, and listing them on Ebay. I just jump on comc.com, or Ebay, put in what I'm looking for, and if I find what I want, I buy it.

I never expect to get anything great from Chrome boxes. But sometimes I am surprised. It's still fun, because I am not in the hobby for the money aspect of it. I love when I get a Milwaukee Brewer in one of my packs. I'm just as excited to get a blue refractor Ryan Braun Chrome card as I'd be to get your average autograph.

Ok, here are some of my Brewer refractors. I almost like these better than the autos. They're fun to collect, and colorful. By the way, some of these will show some color inconsistencies. Chrome cards are notorious for curling slightly after they've been produced. All of these sit in top loaders, and they still don't flatten all the way out. The guys that collect some of these will understand all too well what I'm saying :tongue

thanks bud! those triples dont come around all that often. i was watching ebay for 2 months+ when i finally decided to take the plunge and shell out the cash for it and it never showed. i finally got one after a friend on the beckett message board put me in contact with the owner of his local card shop. i had to give full beckett value for it but it was worth every penny to me.

Wow! Beautiful collections guys! I have nothing that recent, but I do have a TON of Brewer cards. I have over 50,000 total Brewer cards and I'm guessing 10,000 of those are different. Of the 10,000 different cards, I have 1,200 different Yount cards. Tough thing about collecting Yount is that he actually has more cards issued after his retirement than when he was playing. With the exception of a few 1977 discs, the 1986 sportflics error, and a couple extreme oddball cards, I have just about every card of his from the 70's and 80's. I still grab some Brewer/Yount cards on ebay when I have to scratch that itch, but I primarily stick to my case of Heritage a year now.

Bikeage77, those are beautiful. That's pretty much what I'm going to be doing from here on out. I'll still buy some modern cards, but graded vintage is where I'll be investing heavily.

I just love your collection. God, I love baseball.

Some of the cards I'm looking at picking up first: 1956 Topps Ted Williams (love the one you have! I've always wanted a Teddy Ballgame card!!!), 1953 Bowman Color Stan Musial, 1957 Topps Mickey Mantle, 1958 Topps Roberto Clemente, 1956 Topps Hank Aaron, 1955 Topps Jackie Robinson.

I'm going to look at knocking out a couple per month, trying to stick to PSA 5/6. Nice investment grade without breaking the budget on any one card. Of course that Mantle is going to set me back.

I'll try to mix in the '54 Hank Aaron, '55 Clemente, '53 Topps Willie Mays, etc.

I also want to add a 2005 Bowman Chrome Justin Verlander, a 2005 Bowman Chrome Matt Kemp, a 2002 Bowman Chrome Joe Mauer (all autos). I just got my Harper graded in the mail yesterday. I'll scan that in tonight.

Let's open this up to all baseball cards, guys. I expect this thread will be updated quite a bit over the years. :)

Haha, yeah, I just posted quickly before a busy weekend, didn't get all of the Peraltas posted. I would love to work out a deal for the heritage black Peralta, that is one that I'm missing! Feel free to PM me and hopefully we can work something out.

Thanks Stache! You have some beauties too!!! I don't really know where to start with modern. I'd like to get some higher end Braun, Fielder and Yo cards, but just don't know where to begin. I might be hitting you up in the PM for some info. Do you go to the Gonzaga shows? You going to the National this summer?

I inherited 95% of those from my step dad after he passed away. My mom let me cherry pick through all his sets before my step sister foolishly up and sold them (and got completely hosed, also didn't give me a chance to counter offer...at least I got the good ones!) He didn't have any complete sets, but I still kick myself for not taking all his 52s, 53's or 54's as I'm sure she wouldn't have known, but I was trying to be respectful to my mom's wishes.

So after I had those 100 or so slabbed I couldn't just stop and I began collecting the Milwaukee Braves. My goal is to get each set in the PSA registry sitting between a 6 and a 7. Those 8 commons go for a ridiculous amount of money so you can forget about the stars. I'm trying to acquire the knack for grading on my own since it's cheaper to buy raw and send them in, what I thought were 6 or 7's have a lot of time come back 5's. Yet I've had also nabbed a few 7s. The later vintage commons are cheaper to buy them graded then to send in as the technology to cut was better, and cards became more popular. Unless you REALLY can spot a 9 or something, which I can't do.

After I get these Braves sets completed I wouldn't mind getting into a 53 Topps raw set, or the 53 Bowman colors. Those cards are just gorgeous. The 52 Topps are too of course, but Mantle will kill yer budget before you can even get to Robinson, Mays, and the others.

I also would love to get my hands on all of Jackie Robinsons cards, each one is just beautiful.

I'd love to get to the Nationals, but my travel ability is quite limited until I get my back fixed.

If you've got any questions about the modern stuff, please feel free to PM me. Happy to share the knowledge I've accumulated since coming back to the hobby.

As far as getting the knack for grading vintage on your own, that's something I'm working on, too. For now I'll buy the graded cards, closely examining the card itself before deciding to buy. I've gotten pretty good at judging if the card fits the grade, so that will help protect me against unscrupulous people that would try to sell me a faked card, or a card of lesser quality.

One thing I can recommend if you are going to buy raw. Get yourself a common card for whatever particular year you're about to invest heavily into. Use that as your control. If you buy a raw '57 Hank Aaron (as an example), buy a common '57 Topps card, and compare it to the Aaron under 10 x magnification. Compare the printing, the paper consistency, the feel and smell. That's one of the best ways to defend against fakes.

Alright, I'll throw a few non Brewers from the 'ol PC out here. I'm 1 card (the Mantle Base) from completing my 1958 Topps set :) I'm adding a few signed HOF index cards as well, just for fun. As I stated in my earlier post, I have a pretty extensive HOF collection.

Great collection, rwa12! I love that you have a Roy Campanella auto! I'm also a pretty big Pirates fan, and love the '58 Clemente and the Pops autograph.

That 1958 Topps Clemente might be my all-time favorite baseball card. There's something about it that just grabs me. The picture is perfect, the background is bright and bold, and I love the typography from the '58 set. That one will be in my collection very soon!

Bravo, guys! Keep it coming. This is really getting me pumped about the season!!!!

LOL, and I missed it somehow. Damn. I went right to the '54 Topps Eddie Mathews.

The 33 Goudey Ruth is trimmed, which pretty much crushes the value. That being said, it was about the only way I was ever going to afford to have one in my collection. Worth it to own it. I have a few other 33s, in horrible shape, just to have them. I love the 58 set as well, I started collecting it when I got the Maris rookie. I have slowed down my collection to a stand still at this point. I'm a DoD employee, so I'm going to get treated to the upcoming furlough, instead of cards, I'm now trying to hoard cash! Perhaps my favorite part of my PC, that I don't have pics of, is my collection of 2005 Artifacts Robin Yount Patches. There were 50 made, and I think I have 12-13 of them.
