Do any of you collect baseball cards of the Brewers?

The stache

I've been back collecting sports cards (baseball and football) for about two years, concentrating on prospects in baseball. I'm about to expand my collection to include vintage greats of both games, but my Brewer and Packer personal collections will continue to grow no matter what else I do.

Reillymcshane suggested to me a while back that I share some of my collection, so I'm going to do so here, posting some of my Brewer certified autograph collection. I'd like to see what you guys have collected over the years, either Brewer baseball cards, or sports memorabilia.

Some of these guys are of course members of the team now; most of them are in the minors working their way up to the Majors. I'm just getting started out, but now that my car and my medical bills are paid off, I have more money to play with for my hobby.

Eventually, I'm going to rescan all of these without the magnet cases. The gold refractor Khris Davis auto I have at the end looks much better as there are no scratches, or imperfections from the plastic case to interfere with the scan. I just got that in a few days ago.

I'll start it off with Wily Peralta. I hope you all enjoy my little collection. :)

i have waaaaaay too many baseball cards from the 80's and 90's which are worth nothing...

but, i like torts, also have a book of molitor cards that covers about 98% of his cards through his retirement (like 300-400 cards)

as well as an autographed card from basically everyone who has been on the team since about 1998 or so...even the random relievers..

what i like the most though, are personal autographs...so for a few years, when i didn't have three kids, i used to go to about 40 minor league games a year and get my Baseball America Prospect handbook signed by every player I saw that was in it...so I've got a lot of the Brewers current roster in those, as well as on balls and things like that...my favorite was the 2006 Brevard All stars---which includes Braun and Gallardo---I was at both of their last game with the Manatees...that was a cool one

Yup, those were always my favorites. My family and I used to go to baseball card shows every weekend to meet players, get their autographs, and have our (mine and my brother's) picture taken with them. It was mostly scrub Brewers, but I didn't care. It was great. I had the pictures all over my bedroom.

And I didn't care that someone personalizing the autograph made it worthless. It was fun. Hell, I have a totally devalued Mickey Mantle autograph because it is on a Little League baseball along with Mike Hegan, Pete Vuckovich, and Ken Sanders. I mean, I got to meet Mickey Mantle! Who cares if it's not worth anything?

One of my random favorites is actually a Don August autograph. My brother and I got our picture taken with him once and then the next year we knew he was going to be at a card show, so my dad brought the picture and he signed it. He thought that was pretty cool.

That is cool---

my favorite autograph is a Michael Jordan I got on a tiny scrap of folded up paper...the reason it's awesome is because of how I got it:

on March 6th 1990, We went to the Bradley Center to watch the Bucks play the Bulls, which had special significance for me because it was the first and only time I got to watch my cousin, Will Perdue, play in the NBA. it was also my brother's 10th bday, if you are wondering why i remember the date. Well anyway, after the game, Will invited us to come into the press area in front of the locker rooms and i got my roster from the program signed by all the bucks (jay humphries and Ricky Pierce ftw), but Will could tell we were disappointed that the Bulls players hadn't come out. So while we were talking to the random early 90's Bucks players, Will disappeared. When he came back, he had two tiny scraps of paper signed by Jordan---MJ wouldn't come out bc he would be mobbed, but Will wanted to make sure we got his autograph.

It isn't worth anything as far as autographs go, but to me, it's the coolest piece of sports memorabilia I've got...worked out for Will too, as he won a fistful of rings between the Bulls and the Spurs without every really being a key player on either team...even got traded for Dennis Rodman at one point

I've got to coordinate scans/photos, but I have a pretty good Brewer Auto collection. Most of it from 05-09. Had a really sweet Sheets collection, but some of it has been parsed out. Off the top of my head; I have multiple nice Certifieds of Sheets, Fielder, Braun, Weeks, Overbay, Hall, various busted prospects. I think I only have 1 of Jenkins, Hart, Gamel, Doug Davis, and a lot of the other semi stars. I do have a pretty impressive Jake Odorizzi collection as well. My main focus for a while was Yount. I have a ton of patches and autos, as well as a 1/1 or two. I shifted my collection to hockey, as I like the cards better and they hold more value. In the process of selling off my non-personal collection. Just keeping Brewers, STL Blues, Packers and my Baseball HOF Auto collection (I think I'm near 100, and have the majority of the living members).

Here's a small sample of what I have. I am working on obtaining every Wily Peralta card, I think I'm somewhere around 90 different cards and color variations of his. I've got some more that I don't have scans of currently, but this shows off some of them.

Nice stuff guys!

jrodbrewcrew-I've been wondering for a while where that Peralta superfractor went. Now I know. :laughing

I got really lucky finding the atomic. I looked everywhere for it, couldn't find one to save my life. On the off chance, I brought up sportsbuy.com, and one was on there. I couldn't buy it fast enough. I've got most all of his 2009 Chromes-the base, refractor, xfractor, blue and orange refractors. I'm looking to pick up one of the golds now, and I'm always on the lookout for a red.

I also need to pick up a couple Hellweg chromes. I think he's going to be a big time reliever for us. I need to add an Odorizzi or two, also. Most of my funds have been going to my Bowman Chrome prospect auto collection. I just picked up a 2011 Bowman Chrome base Bryce Harper auto, BGS 9.5 with a 10 auto, and all 9.5 subs. That cost me a pretty penny.

Do any of you guys keep your graded cards/high ends in a safe? I'm shopping for a fire safe right now, and looking for suggestions. I want at least an hour protection against fire, and water proof. I'm getting my collection insured, but I want to keep the cards at home, and not have to drive to a bank to see them in a safe deposit. I might end up doing that for the vintage cards I buy.

okay, I have a question for you guys. I understand (well, sorta not, actually) the need to have 13 different color variations on a single player's card as it creates scarcity. Is it safe to assume that you guys, for the most part, buy all your autographed insert cards and such as posted in your photos rather than lucking into them through opening packs? And if so, how much are you paying for these cards? (i.e. how much did you have to pay for a card that is listed as "1/1" or "1/45"?) I never realized that the Bowman cards had become SOOOOO specialized that they offered a bazillion different variations/colors/refractorisms/etc. Kinda makes it pointless, to me, as a former collector and one who now a days buys a pack here and a pack here just for the fun of opening a pack, not for "investing" in.

Just kinda curious what kind of coin one spends on, for example, each card that has been posted thus far.

I have thought about getting back into collecting the last year or two, but I'm intimidated and don't even know what's out there anymore. For example, is it true that there is pretty much Topps and Bowman that make the officially licensed MLB cards at this point? I thought I read somewhere that there are no other companies anymore that can use the MLB logos and stuff.

If so... is Bowman just prospects or do they make full team sets like Topps does?

I'd like to try and figure out more about this stuff and maybe get back into it... but I would be more interested in buying packs than buying single cards...

pitchleague-95% of the cards I have I buy directly, either from Ebay, comc.com, or from another collector on one of the forums where trading/selling is done (sportscardforum for one). I will still open an occasional box because it's fun, but getting a really high end card is more the exception than the rule. It's far most cost effective to buy individually. I can see the card I'm getting, and look it over. It takes chance out of the equation. You can easily spend $70-100 or more on a box, and get nothing of high value. As far as how much I pay for these cards, it really depends on a number of things-who it is, which set the card comes from, the condition of the card (either raw or graded), and the scarcity. Then there's other factors, like the card having an artifact (part of a game worn uniform or jersey patch, bat, button, shoe, laundry tag, etc), or does the card have a certified autograph (and is it on a sticker, or on card).

The 2011 Bowman Chrome Khris Davis gold refractor I bought cost me about $55. There were 50 of those cards made. He's not a really high profile prospect yet, so this is a good time to jump in. The Tyrone Taylor 2012 Bowman Chrome auto next to it cost me about $15. There's no serial number on the card. he's not real well known yet, and they're widely available. Most of the ones I've posted here are pretty affordable, with the 2005 Bowman Chrome Ryan Braun and 2005 Bowman Sterling Ryan Braun being the most expensive at a little over $100 each. The Wily Peralta Topps Chrome atomic refractor (third card from the left in the second row) cost me about $80. Only 10 of those cards were made. The Segura 2011 Bowman Chrome blue refractor auto I got the day he was traded to the Brewers for Greinke. I think it cost me $45.

When you start looking at the more high profile prospects, they're much more expensive. I bought a 2009 Bowman Chrome Mike Trout base auto before the start of last year for $100. Now they're selling for $5-600 raw. My most recent high end expenditure was $400 on a 2011 Bowman Chrome Bryce Harper base auto, Beckett graded 9.5 out of 10, with a 10 auto, and all 9.5 subs (centering, edges, corners and card surface). Of course if you start looking at the rarer auto cards, like blue refractors (typically 150 made), gold (50 made), orange (25 made), red (5 made) or a superfractor (1 made), you're looking at a lot more money. Those can go into the thousands easily. I typically buy Bowman Chrome prospects more than anything, working on Baseball America and MLB.com's top 100 lists. Average price I spend? On lesser known prospects, $20-25. Higher end prospects, $100 plus easily. For more established stars like Clayton Kershaw, Matt Kemp, Joe Mauer, a nice Chrome base (non serialized) auto can go $150 or 200. I typically stick with base, refractors (serialized to 500 cards), and occasionally blue refractors. If you go much higher than that, they start getting really expensive.

chadomac-Topps bought out Bowman, so both Topps or Bowman line cards will have the MLB license (meaning the cards can depict the team logos). Other card companies, like Panini (used to be Donruss), Upper Deck, etc cannot. They might have an agreement with the MLBPA (players association), but without the MLB license, you're going to see a lot of pictures of players cropped so you don't see their uniform, or cap. Those are less appealing, obviously.

You can still buy packs, just know in advance what the odds are of getting a particular card, and set your expectations accordingly. If you buy something like Topps Triple Threads, you're guaranteed to get a few relic cards, or relic + autograph cards. They can be really nice, and they're not restricted to current players. You can get really high dollar cards, with relics from players like Williams, Clemente, Ruth, Gehrig, Foxx, etc. Those are typically 1 of 1's, or very low productions (like /5 or /10).

rwa12, really nice cards! I like the Younts especially. I want to get more of his autographed cards, but right now I'm starting on his vintage cards. I'm looking for a nice PSA 8 or 9 1975 Yount to upgrade over my raw (which is still pretty nice):

I'm really wanting to get more heavily into high value vintage. The new cards are a little too much, as it seems a new line comes out every week. Too much saturation (why I stick to just Bowman Chrome for the most part).

But as far as I'm concerned, no modern card touches the charm of the old vintage cards:

When I get my safe at the end of the month, I'm going to start filling it with vintage graded like this:

Not the most expensive vintage card I'll own (it only cost me about $60. The Mickey Mantle I want will cost me $600), but I sit there and stare at this card for seemingly hours on end. 1953 Bowman Color is my favorite set of all-time. As somebody who has an absolute passion for the history of the game, this is a connection to a bygone era, before my time.

'stache, thanks for the info. I kind of figured it was like that but I wasn't sure. Good to know that I will NEVER be able to get into that kind of hobby that you are in, as there is no way on God's Green Earth that I would be able to afford more than one card per calendar year.

I know that they have "retail" packs and "hobby" packs and such. What is the difference between the two? And can you even get those 1/1 cards (or whatever ratio) in packs anymore? Is it even possible? I see the "odds" that they put on the wrappers on some packs but does it even happen when most of them seem to be up on ebay or whatever from dealers who just ripped open tons of packs just for those very special cards?

In other words, if I went to Walmart, for example, and bought one pack of cards a day for a year, would I EVER get anything worth anything?

I have a ton of what you guys posted too. My best cards though are my 54 Hank and Jackie Robinson. Both graded PSA 8.5 and I have that 05 Chrome Braun but mines the X-Fractor one (graded a 9.5 PSA). I have an entire are of my basement dedicated to my collection, and probably could be debt free if I decided to sell everything independently.

Theres a monthly show at Gonzaga Hall in West Allis you guys should check out.

I have a collection of Brewer cards collecting dust in my closet. At one point in time, I had all the regular issue cards from Topps, Fleer, Donruss etc. from the 1969 Pilots on plus a ton of whatever oddball stuff I could find. Then in the early 90's, each company started coming out with a gazillion sets so I stopped. Next to the Yount RC, this one is probably my favorite Brewer card of all time:

In all my years on this board, this is officially the coolest thread I've ever read through! Sweet collection!!! I collect as many different card of Cirillo and Jenkins as I can as those were my 2 favorite guys growing up, therefore being jealous of those 2 Jenkins printing plates! haha. I also like to get a Topps set each year and have every Brewers Topps set including the 1969 Pilots. Keep the scans coming!

I don't specifically collect Brewers cards but I do have minor league cards of 725 of the 730 players who have appeared with the Huntsville Stars. I have cards of all 53 Seattle Pilots (although the Billy Williams card is as a coach for the 1989 Canton Indians). I have cards of players from favorite teams I pulled for in the Series in my youth - '65 Twins, '66 Oriloes, '67 Red Sox, '68 Tigers, '69 Mets, '70 Orioles, '71 Pirates, '72-'74 A's, etc.

I have full Topps sets put back for my son starting with the year he was born ('77) until he turned 20. I figured he could get them himself after that ... Now I'm doing the same thing for my grandson, born in '02. My other son was born in '81 and I got Fleer sets for him starting that year until they dropped out of the full-set market.

I've got lots of Huntsville Stars souvenir stuff - bats, helmets, caps, mitts, schedules, team pix... Many cards signed by Stars players, a couple of team signed mini-helmets, a team signed program and more.

All of my autographs are personal. My favorites from Huntsville are Braun, Gallardo, Sheets and some favorite players that never made it big (Jared Mathis, Derek Lee, etc.). I've not even tried to get any the last few years.

I've also been lucky enough to meet and get cards signed by Brooks Robinson, Lou Brock, Earl Weaver, Dale Murphy and others. I met Nolan Ryan in the museum at Arlington, Tx Stadium. I didn't have a card with me but he signed the museum pamphlet I had.
