When do minor league rosters come out? Latest -- the Tweets begin...

When do minor league rosters come out for each minor league team? I have been using the JS Online Brewer page to click into each minor league team and then to the roster page. They seem somewhat inaccurate. Does anyone have any better ways to get more accurate data?

The earliest rosters will be released is next Saturday the 30th, more likely a week from this Monday (day after Easter). We can speculate, but that's all it would be. The first year Taylor Green won Organizational Player of the Year, he was literally a last-minute "can you play third base" addition to the Brewers' then-West Virginia Power A-ball roster.

You can't go by the MiLB roster pages until the regular season begins.

The Brewers will give authorization to the four full-season affiliates when it's OK for them to post their rosters. Next Thursday or so, we'll kick off the four "Your 2013 _______" threads within which we'll link to feature non-game stories of farmhands all season. Each affiliate honors the Brewers request (naturally) and won't link to the full rosters until they are given the go-ahead. It's a sensitive time because several players will be given their release as well.

To be honest, your best chance for confirmations are early tweets from one of the 97 Brewers now on Twitter. Add this list timeline to your favorites.

Huntsville Stars opening-day roster to be finalized soon, manager Darnell Coles says

By Mark McCarter, Huntsville Times

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- When the Huntsville Stars go to work in their spring training game today, it'll be between 82 and 88 degrees.

Which means they could have nearly as much adjustment to chilly Huntsville as Huntsville will have to the Stars when they arrive next week.

Manager Darnell Coles' Stars are in the final days of spring training, and final cuts still remain. Coles said early this morning that "I'll know my team in the next 24 to 28 hours."

The Stars' first appearance of the year at Joe Davis Stadium will be a 6 p.m. exhibition game against Alabama A&M on April 2. The Southern League season opens April 4 at Chattanooga.

Huntsville's first home game is April 10 against Jacksonville, beginning a 10-game home stand.

Though Coles could not commit to any names before the Milwaukee Brewers' minor league staff makes its roster decisions today and Thursday, it does appear the 2013 roster will likely be full of players who are new to the club or who had only brief appearances last season.

Taylor Jungmann, the Brewers' top draft pick in 2011, with a reported $2,525,000 signing bonus, is expected to anchor the pitching staff. He was 11-6 at Class A Brevard last year, with a 3.53 ERA. He's listed by Baseball America as the Brewers' No. 3 prospect.

Based on last season's Class A Brevard team, it would seem first baseman Jason Rogers, second baseman Nick Shaw and Florida State League All-Star third baseman Mike Walker would be most in line for a promotion, and the versatile T.J. Mittlestaedt (44 games in Huntsville after a late call-up) would in the lineup.

Brock Kjeldgaard will be a familiar name. The big outfielder played in 48 games with Huntsville last year before breaking a finger, then suffered a broken foot in the Arizona Fall League, in which he was off to a .385 average with four homers and nine RBIs in seven games.

Adam Weisenburger, rated by Baseball America as the organization's top defensive catcher, would seem in line to be the No. 1 catcher in Huntsville. He was with the Stars for 47 games in 2012.

The top three 2012 Stars position players -- first baseman Hunter Morris, second baseman Scooter Gennett, outfielder Josh Prince -- will start the season in Nashville, barring unforeseen circumstances.

Morris was given a look at first base by the Brewers this spring, but batted only .120 with one homer.

Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke told reporters, "when you look at a guy coming from Double-A, if he just goes off in the spring, you may think, 'You know something? Maybe he can handle this.'

"He was definitely a name that we thought of, but it's not like I was thinking he was going to be our guy.

"He needs to go to Triple-A and continue to improve on his defense, and then have another big year offensively."

Outfielder Khris Davis, who played in only 44 games for the Stars because of injury, is making a strong bid to stick with the Brewers, batting .296 with a team-high six homers and 15 RBIs in 24 spring training games.

"You know how he was when he was tearing it up for us," Coles said, referring to a stretch in which he had four homers in four games in late July. "He's been doing that all spring in big-league camp."

It's been a more disjointed spring than usual, complicated first by the World Baseball Classic in which a number of Brewers and Milwaukee farmhands were participants (Ryan Braun, Jonathan Lucroy, Yovani Gallardo, Hiram Burgos among others), then by injuries.

So freakish is the injury list, general manager Doug Melvin had to be treated for a scorpion bite.

Corey Hart, the Southern League MVP in 2003 for the Stars, had knee surgery in January. Mat Gamel, with a star-crossed career, is lost for the season after tearing his ACL. Infielders Jeff Bianchi and Taylor Green have both had hip injuries; Bianchi missed the Classic because of his injury and Green was just placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Also going on the DL Tuesday was pitcher Mark Rogers, who had been in line for one of the starting rotation jobs. He is having problems with his right shoulder that has cost him velocity the last couple of weeks. The Brewers' top pick in the 2004 draft, he's only had eleven big league appearances (four in 2012) and missed 2007-08 after surgeries.

As mentioned in the post above, Kyle Heckathorn (not on the 40-man) got an unexpected bump up from AA to AAA, and Josh Stinson was the reason why, as noted by Josh himself in this twitter conversation.

And someone will get a bump up to AA, High-A, and A, all because of this waiver claim.

Just goes to show how fluid the final rosters can be right up to the final moments.

Noche, please explain your logic. Heckathorn hasn't gotten out A, A+, or AA hitters yet. Why would he be in line for a MLB bullpen job when there are at least ten guys ahead of him?

I don't think it is out of the question that we will go through 10+ guys in the 'pen this season. Besides that, he is a decent candidate for a September call-up as well.

I don't think it is a sure thing, but I would not be surprised.

Thanks for supplying the updates as they occur, Mass. The T-Rats come across the street where I work in 2 weeks so I'm pretty excited to see so many aggressive promotions/placements. I might just have to go to all 3 games.

And the Twins affiliate here in Cedar Rapids should have some impressive names as well (like Byron Buxton).

While not roster assignments yet, I did ask our friend Chris Mehring if any of the players from the Dominican Summer League were stateside. He let me know that Francisco Castillo, Milton Gomez, Jorge Ortega, Carlos Pena, Elvis Rubio, and Juan Santiago were all in camp.

Obviously don't know much about any of these players. Francisco Castillo is a switch hitting center fielder and appears to have good speed but no power. 19 years old and this will be his 3rd season in the Brewer organization

Milton Gomez, also 19 and starting his 3rd season in the organization. Seems to be a ground ball pitcher with a rate of 2.98 G/F over the last 2 seasons and only 2 total home runs allowed in 83.2 innings. Primarily has been used as a starter.

Jorge Ortega will turn 20 later this summer. Also starting his 3rd season. A right handed starter, Ortega pitched 78 innings last season without allowing a home run. He had allowed 5 in his previous season. Ortega posted a 2.06 G/F rate and a 4-1 K/BB rate.

Carlos Pena is the 2nd "Carlos Pena" the Brewers have had. Coincidently, both were catchers. This will be the 20 year olds 4th year in the organization.

18 year old Elvis Rubio will begin his 3rd season in the organization. 6'-3" and 215 pounds. Hopefully that stature can translate into some power from the outfield.

Juan Santiago is a 22 year old left handed pitcher. Only 5'-11" and 176 pounds. He seemed to really take a step forward cutting his walk rate from 8 per 9 innings in 2011 to 3.6 in 2012. He also posted a 3 G/F rate and 10.77 K/9 while nearly doubling his inning total from 2011-2012. 2013 will be his 4th professional season.

I would guess Arizona would be the most likely destination for these players this season.

That's good news that Ortega will be stateside, but what about our man of mystery Gian Rizzo who put's up video game stats but only appeared in 11 games last season? What does this kid throw? Is he healthy? So many questions and so little information for these DSL player.
