I get the concern about Davis' defense, but seriously....stick him at first and live with it. He'll get better.

I don't know. He's listed at 5'11", and from watching him this ST I'd say that's even a stretch. He'd make for a pretty small target.

Davis did an interview this spring where he said he tried out first base and it really didn't work for him. Defense is a skill that some players have and some don't, so your statement is kind of like saying "just give Izturis a bat and tell him to hit a HR. He'll get better." Izturis will never hit for power and Davis will probably never be a good fielder. Hopefully he'll be passable as a LF.

Therefore if the Brewers want him as a MLB starter, they'll have to move Braun to RF which he could certainly play. Since we have Aoki for the next five seasons, he'd have to either be benched or moved to CF, where we have Schafer for six years. So, (barring injuries) for Davis to start for the Brewers, Braun would need to change positions and either Aoki or Schafer will need to be traded or moved to the bench.

In other words, Davis really has to prove himself if he's ever going to be a starting OF for the Brewers. Even as a 4th OF, Gindl probably has an upper hand, as he can back up all three OF positions. I like Davis, but he's certainly not in an ideal position, and may end up as trade bait to a team that needs a LF/DH.

Defense at first base can be learned. Field grounders and catch the ball occasionally on a short hop. Power and speed and a 95 mph fastball are God given.

When your only positions are LF and DH, you are much more valuable in the AL. His value could be in helping land Bud Norris or some other AL pitcher.

I hope this does not come true. Davis for Norris would be an extreme overpay for Norris in my opinion.

To me Davis is a Beane type of a player and I wouldn't be surprised if Davis ends up with the A's at some point in his career. If you want to target a Bud Norris type the A's have a young version of him in Ian Krol.

I agree with using Davis as trade bait. He does have talent that should rank him higher than 20th, just not with the Brewers. I would love to see what an offensively challanged team like the Rays would offer for him. Everyone knows they have pitching coming out of their ears, and he could possibly help them this year. An OF of Davis, Desmond Jennings, and Wil Myers would be very exciting for Rays fans for years to come. Regardless, his future would be brighter on a team like that than he currently is for us, and if he could bring back a young stud pitcher to put in the low minors, that could help fill a void we have.

Oh he played 1st base in instructionals for the first time and didn't look good? Well that obviously means he can never play it and will never get better. Meanwhile Alex Gonzalez is going to be our starting 1st baseman for a month. They should be playing Davis as much as possible at 1st in spring training.
