Divisional foes, for comparison

CHC: 18, 20, 36, 54

CIN: 14, 78, 91

PIT: 3, 11, 44, 53, 66

STL: 2, 16, 43, 45, 56, 90, 94

Jake Odorizzi is #83. Billy Hamilton is almost comically overrated imo in this list; 14th-best prospect in the entire league? Come on.

St. Louis is just really stacked with good prospects. It's depressing considering they don't have top draft picks. You look at Pittsburgh and the Cubs and you'd expect some top guys because of the high picks the two clubs have had the last few years. St. Louis has done it without that luxury, making their haul even more impressive.

The more time that passes, & the more I think about it, the more I come to the conclusion that Bruce Seid has to go. The damage has already been done; I just hope it doesn't get much worse. The lack of success on the farm isn't exclusively his fault, but he's atop the chain of command.

The Brewers have done a good job at building up the depth but over the next two years really need to focus on ceiling. He also needs to diversify the draft a little. He drafts way too many outfielders and not nearly enough shortstops and third basemen. I realize that you don't necessarily draft for need but at some point you have to address glaring weaknesses.

If Jed Bradley can turn things around, and it seems like he at least has an idea about what went wrong last year, and Taylor Jungmann can progress a little more Seid's results will look a lot better. I think last year's haul of Coulter, Roache and Taylor may end up being pretty good, though I was not a fan of the Mitch Haniger pick.

The Brewers also need to be more aggressive with their players. It seems like no matter good a player is doing they absolutely will not make promotions until around the all star break.

I think Hamilton is easily one of the top 15 athletes in minor league baseball but because speed seems to very undervalued in modern baseball I'm not exactly sure where to project him as a prospect.

He's never going to be a power guy and his best tool will degrade rapidly as he ages, he's not always going to be the fastest player in the game. On the right team in the right situation his abilities on the bases would allow his offense contribution to play up having a greater impact than the .700ish OPS I'd project him at. With his speed in the right situation he's a top 30 maybe even a top 20 guy. However if he's playing for a station to station type team then he's not going to have the impact that his athleticism would suggest, but he's still a top 50 guy regardless.

Hamilton could be an extremely valuable player through his late 20s if used properly, but I wouldn't look to sign him past his arbitration years if I was CIN or a team that may ultimately land him through a trade.

To me Hamilton is closer to Juan Pierre with a bit better defense but not by that much. If Hamilton stays with the Reds I fully expect Baker to have him hitting lead off and he will probably hit around .235 to .250 in the majors with a very low OBP with an extremely low OPS. While his speed is nice he has a few holes in his swing which will get exposed in the majors and I wouldn't be surprised if he is a complete flop. I expect him to have a career close to what Pierre has had. Hamilton to me is just not a top 50 prospect as he is lacking in a lot of other tools besides his speed.

Bruce Seid has been the scouting director since 11/10/08. That's what, 4 years? Is that enough time for him to prove himself? I'm not so sure. I look at the farm system and it's potential to break out this year and should that happen there will be fans saying he's doing a pretty good job; especially with all the pitching breakthroughs to the majors that happened last season. Even though he didn't draft some of these guys, he's likely had some input on them that might have had an effect on how they were handled. I just think it's too soon.

I think that we'll be able to start judging the Seid years around this time next year. We'll know more about some of the potential impact players that were drafted last summer and will see if the general draft trends shift at all. It is really disappointing to me that we don't have more people up there with the decent draft slots that we have had over the past couple of seasons.

.

I've seen Hamilton with my very own eyes in a spring backfield game against the Manatees.

I still don't believe what I saw. He scored from 2nd on a ground out to Scooter. I have no idea what to make of it.

Juan Pierre he ain't.

I just want to add some friendly perspective that the Cardinals farm system in recent years has typically been rated toward the bottom of all teams. That's obviously different this year, but the point being that they still managed to develop talent from within even if that talent wasn't viewed as can't-miss in the minor leagues.

I agree that the Brewers system is in rough shape, and that last year's draft class needs to step forward this year, but there are enough players in the system that will be looked upon to contribute this year and next. Since the playoffs are still on the Brewers radar, they're going to be turning to quite a few of these kids along the way to shoulder some of the load. We got a little taste of that late last year.
