Road Trip Question for: @BAL, @PIT, @WAS

Bombers

A group of 4 of us are considering flying to Washington/Baltimore - probably out of O'hare as flights are really cheap. I am wondering for those who have knowledge of the DC area and/or the Pitt area.

We are thinking of doing:

1. Fly in Saturday morning June 29th - Attend NYY @ BAL

2. Wake up early Sunday June 30th - Make 4 hour drive to Pittsburgh. (The group is all early birds so we would be on the road no later than 7) ... Would attend 1:30 game of Brewers @ Pirates.

3. Stay in Pitt and drive back to DC on Monday July 1st and attend the Brewers @ Nats that night.

4. Fly home on Tuesday.

Is a 4 hour Sunday drive to/from Pitt to/from DC a good idea? ok idea? or horrible idea? Any tips?

Torts is the guy to give you PIT tips. Someone else on the board lives down in the BAL/DC area. But here's my thoughts from living near Harrisburg, PA and frequent visits to both BAL and DC:

The 4 hour drive to PIT on JUN 30 should be pretty easy, just a matter of wanting to drive. You may encounter some heavy traffic coming back on JUL 1, depending upon the amount of people headed east on the PA Turnpike. But you'll hit the interchange toward DC before getting near any real mess. [it's the holiday week, and the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg happens that week also.]

Do note that you will be taking the PA Turnpike, so remember to have cash money for the tolls. I'm assuming you won't have an EZ-Pass.

It's helpful to have a hotel that is a short drive to a Metro stop for attending anything in DC. Nationals Ballpark is right off the Navy Yards stop on the Green Line. You won't have to deal with driving in DC and trying to find a parking spot. [i'd suggest something near Greenbelt, MD, where the Green Line ends. It's not too far from BWI--assuming you're flying in there. It won't be that far for driving from BAL after your game at Camden Yards. Driving and parking down in BAL isn't much of an issue; it's a pain in DC.]

Hope that helps. Others can give their thoughts.

To echo Brewmaster a bit.... definitely utilize the subway in DC. Even if you are not used to or comfortable on subways it is very well marked and you will likely see a ton of people heading to the game. (Not trying to be condescending, just not sure how much experience in DC you have.) Taxis are outrageously priced in DC and you'll save money by taking the subway without giving up a ton of time taking city traffic into consideration. There is not a ton to do around the ballpark, except for one road leading directly to the stadium which has a fenced in outdoor area with bands and bars if that is your thing.
