Donald Driver's future

prophet
With Donald Driver retiring this week as a Packer (hopefully for good), I was just wondering where he sits in Packer lore. Does he get a street? Packer HOF (no question)? Ring of Honor? Number retirement? Just wondering what people think. I realize being a Brewer fan doesn't automatically make you a Packer fan, but most people cross over. I think, with everything he's done on and off the field, he should get every honor the Packers and Green Bay can bestow on him.

Packer HOF, and thats it.

I would agree with this. I guess it could be because of his Dancing with the Stars appearance but people have really overreacted to how great he was as a Packer. Amazes me that people think his number should be retired when the guy the stadium is named after doesn't even have his number retired. If the Packers are thinking of retiring numbers maybe they should give Paul Hornung a call before he dies.

Ron Wolf is the only person not in the HOF whose in the the Ring of Honor.

Only 4 players have had their number retired. #5 has not been issued for regular season play since Hornung retired. I'm pretty sure #4 has not been issued since Favre had left.

5 have had it retired (3, 14, 15, 66, 92). Hornung is the "Fake 6th" and Favre will be the official 6th.

The Packers have nothing to do with naming streets though, and considering the work that Driver has done in the community and the state, I could see the city naming a street after him in the future. And as far as people overreacting about how great he was as a packer, he's the all-time leader in receptions and yards for a franchise that's been around for a hundred years. Two out of three of the categories that recievers are measured on. That's greatness no matter how you slice it.

I think, if anything, people are underreacting to how great he was because he wasn't a primadonna look-at-me wideout like ochocinco, keyshawn, or many others. He didn't get the press, but he put up the numbers that an elite wideout does.

He played for a really, really long time. I don't think he was ever a top 5 guy at his position.

Driver was never an all pro, he never lead the league in Rec yards, catches, TDs, or any other important stat. He never had a 100 catch season, or had double digit TD year. By comparison, Sterling Sharpe played half as long as DD, yet Driver only has 150 more catches than he does. Driver was never the #1 option while he was here, with the exception of maybe 1-2 years. Ahman Green is the Packers all time leading rusher, that doesn't make him great in my mind either. If you play long enough in a league that is more offensive(specifically passing) minded than ever before with one sure fire HOFer, and one probable HOFer, you will climb up the all time charts too. Don't get me wrong, i love DD. But he is VASTLY overrated by our fan base. He will be, and should be in the Packers HOF. But that is where it stops.

Also #1, which has only been worn by Curly Lambeau.

He's a Packer HOF member for sure, but I don't think he's ring of honor worthy. His longevity and consistent production helped him get the counting stats, but he was never an elite talent. Heck, he wasn't even the best player to wear #80 in franchise history. James Lofton was. He's pretty comparable to a guy like Hines Ward, but Ward has one more ring and more impressive stats, but neither should seriously be considered for Canton.

we tend to lionize people when they leave, whether it's in death or a favourite player retiring. i think any thought of him going in the Ring of Fame is just that. Driver was a good player, sure, but if you were a fan of another team you're not going to look at Driver's numbers and think of him as a particularly special player, but more as one who was good and happened to have a very long career.

you look at the Ring of Fame and those are players you wouldn't trade for all the gold in the world. i don't look at Driver's career in the same light. if i had to compare him to a Brewers player, i think Geoff Jenkins would be appropriate. they both gave their all to the team and were definitely good players, but i don't think anybody is looking back at Jenkins' career and wanting to paint him in any extra-special light.

This. I know Driver as a good receiver, McDonalds, and dancing. I don't think he's someone to celebrate for all time.

I don't think that Driver will be on the ring of honor, I was just posting the question to have the discussion. I'm probably biased since i've met him several times around town and he's such a great guy to talk to. I will stand by that I think it's possible the city gives him a street. His community work off the field goes a long way for that. I'm not saying it's likely, but it's certainly possible. speaking of ring of honor though, congrats to Dave Robinson on the Hall of Fame voting yesterday. I guess the Pack will have to add a name after all.

Absolutely. I would be in favor of putting his name up there. Not quite a hall of fame player, but definitely a hall of fame person. If I had to pick one athlete least likely to be in the news for a 'transgression', it would be him. That has to count for something, especially if a guy like James Lofton is in there.
