Random MLB News And Discussion 2013

Gibbons refers to him as an above average 3B defensively.

In terms of physical tools, I'd agree with that. Not sure he's going to fit well at 2B.

I think that's a terrible idea. I've always been a huge fan of Lawrie and thought he should have been a 3rd basemen right out of the gate instead of a 2nd basemen. He doesn't have the quickness IMO needed for 2nd base. He's got good hands, he has good range and a good arm. 3rd seems perfect for him.

At 2nd base I see him struggling with the DP balls a bit and his range. Plus, his arm strength isn't nearly as valuable.

Nope, obviously I didn't forget that. I said I don't think he'll translate well to 2B. I think he was always a bad fit there, like Coulter is at catcher, but it's the Brewers -- square peg/round hole defensive assignment strategy...

I agree with you on Lawrie, but where is this almost non-stop criticism coming from directed towards the Brewers regarding players positions?

Coulter at the ripe old age of 19 can't play catcher because? Why? His size? He was a HS wrestler, and a very good one, a state champ. I don't see why we'd give up on him at catcher THIS early. If he's struggling defensively when he's 22 or so, you can make a relatively easy adjustment.

Why take guys off of premium positions before you've even given them a chance to develop at them?

This ALL seems to stem from the Weeks/Braun/Prince/Hart period in which there weren't a whole lot of choices available.

2013 Hall of Fame inductee fun facts!!!

Deacon White is said to have still believed the earth to be flat.

Jacob Ruppert bought Babe Ruth from the Red Sox for a hundred grand.

Hank O'Day presided over Merkle's Boner. Now that is just fun to type.

Was looking for some relief help on my fantasy team and saw that Caleb Thielbar was having a pretty good year with the Twins, a .68 ERA in 26.1 innings. Looked further and saw that he was drafted by the Brewers in 2009 and then released in 2010. Any insight on why a lefty arm was released so soon after being drafted? The Brewers could have had the only two Caleb's in the majors since 1871.

That was a disgrace. The player was obviously arguing the call but was in no way over the top or out of line. That umpire should be fined and suspended for that. Just terrible and an embarrassment to professional umpires.

It's so awesome watching the Pirates play well with PNC Park filled.

I've got to agree with this. Their fanbase is so overdue for some genuine excitement. This does not mean I'll be rooting for the Pirates during their last two series with the Brewers, but I'll go right back to rooting for them after September 4. (It's not just that the alternative is STL, either.)

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

I love the pirates are winning (still) for more than the fact that I love baseball, but it also means that radio shows dont have to talk about the steelers until mid august. it RULES.

Mike Trout turns 23 on Wednesday.

Mike Trout ranks 12th in WAR in the 2010's. Mike Trout has been in the majors for only about half of the games in the 2010's.

He's posting a 175 wRC+ this season. Last season he posted a 166 wRC+.

He hits for average. He hits for power. He fields a difficult position well. He's a great baserunner. This season, he's struck out in 17% of PA's and walked in 13% of PA's.

However much faith you put in advanced metrics shouldn't even influence how awesome you think he is. Any way you slice it, he's simply a phenomenal player.

I know he plays on the West Coast, but I need to find more time to watch this guy play. He's probably one of the 5 or so best players in MLB history through age 22.

I think it's time to sit back and enjoy watching what this kid can do. I've had enough of this Biogenesis crap.

Gabe Kapler with an interesting article about how pre-game batting practice works in Japan. Seems more beneficial than how it is done in America.

Wow, he is an excellent writer. Great read. Thanks!

Wow, just looked at some stats and Prince Fielder is only hitting .260/.355/.434 this year.

Prince is hitting just .219 in his last 50 games and during an interview yesterday Tori Hunter alluded to the fact Prince is going through some things off the field. Apparently the off the field issues turned out to be filing for divorce.

Not just “at Night” anymore.
