Halladay for Hart, Gomez, minor league pitcher

rickh150

I like Corey Hart. I would not want to lose him. In fact, if I had to do some wheeling and dealing, I would try and trade someone elso (Weeks, Gomez, Ramirez) so we could have him playing a great first base for the next three or four seasons and get a bit younger.

I, however, am just floating this out there today. The Phillies need a few more bats in the outfield and to get younger a bit. Perhaps we include Thornburg and/or a double AA type pitcher with some upside.

We're going to be losing Gomez after the season anyway- he's going to want a big contract. Hart is going to want a big extension too. Without trading another big contract, that looks to be impossible. We do have a bunch of young pitchers, meaning one of them could be dealt.

Halladay is still a top 10 pitcher in this league. He is owed 40 million over the next two years. This year, we would have to add just about 4 million or so to our payroll to get him, minus Hart and Gomez contracts.

Halladay/Yo would be our #1/2 with a host of possibles for the rest of the rotation. Aoki could man CF for the forseeable future. I believe he has five years remaining with arby. Gamel has a position at 1B or RF, with Schaffer also getting more time. Hunter Morris's path is cleared, as well to see what he can do. We are then considerated a legit threat for the next two seasons.

The question is still would the Phillies do it? Well, I'm not sure, but it would have to entice them to get a much better OF. Plus, with their money freed up a bit for 2013 and a bunch for 2014, they could re-sign one or both of the current Brewers long-term. Plus, they haven't won with their three horses yet; last year they didn't even make the play-offs.

Wrong forum, and no way Philly does this deal.

Did you not see what Tampa got for Price, or NY for Dickey?

Please make sure you're posting this to the right forum. For a second I read this and my heart actually stopped.

Yes. Could a moderator please move this to the transactions forum?

To the topic, I agree with those who would rather get inexpensive guys with team control instead of an expensive guy for two-years. What it would take to get Halladay is too much for the Brewers to pay.

Aoki could man CF for the forseeable future. I believe he has five years remaining with arby.

No, as an international free agent he is not subject to the arby process. He signed a two-year deal with a third year option. We got a good deal, but not the deal you get with young, pre-arby/arby guys.

I do like the thinking, and I honestly think it might have more legs than some would want to think if Philly would ink Hart or even both to an extension. For two years of Halladay, I think that Hart & Gomez is a very fair starting point and is surely the sort of player who could bridge the two years in between now & the development of even more of our young starters.

I'd actually love to have Cliff Lee and would gladly put together those two guys & a couple high-end prospects to make that deal, unbelievably treacherous as it might prove to be.

Hart would just veto this trade unless the Phillies decide to move their spring training facilities to AZ and on the flip side I believe Halladay also has a no trade clause which the Brewers are on since they have spring training facilities in AZ and not in FL. Unless both the Phillies and the Brewers are switching spring training sites this is a no deal from the start.

Oh, the pesky details of Hart's limited NTC....

It doesn't hurt to dream. That's part of why we spend time here on this board. I still like my idea even if it meant switching the "target" team & potential rotation anchor. Texas? Seattle? I guess those two teams have been tossed around plenty already.

I'm glad you're not the GM of the Brewers. Lee's also getting old, and even though he's under contract until 2015, it won't be long until there's some significant decline.

That was a totally unnecessary swipe. And for goodness' sake, the guy's making a salary the Brewers would appear extremely unlikely to bring in at this point even they could even strike a deal w/ Philly in the first place.

Everyone's getting old. There are always outliers to the "standard" age-based progressions, and some of them defy those patterns significantly for the better. I remember when Nolan Ryan was a FA and rather interested in the Brewers. Harry Dalton was a fool and didn't think the Brewers needed him. The guy pitched another 10 awesome years and won more Cy Youngs. I could just imagine how lit-up this board would've been at the prospect of bringing in one of the games all-time best pitchers, with many inevitably against it because -- Heaven forbid! -- he was already in his mid-30s.

In the meantime, Lee's still an incredible pitcher. And he's also notably better than any pitcher the Brewers have. Like the Brewers couldn't use him?

My whole point was the value of the very few "difference makers" out there. We've seen first-hand the difference Sheets, Sabathia, & Greinke make when they're on the mound. Lee's that kind of pitcher. Those are the types of guys who give you a chance not only to get TO the playoffs but also a legit chance to win it all.

Ah, sorry about sounding a little snarky there. I have to remember not to post on the forums 10 minutes after waking up. But still I'm just a little wary about Lee's age. Although some pitchers actually do really well in their mid-30s and beyond, not many do. And Hart + Gomez + 2 high end prospects seem a lot to give up.

Lee's 34 'til late August & has 3 more years on his contract, so that's one reason he'd be better than the 2-year guys brought in 2 winters ago. Hart + Gomez + 2 high-end guys might be too much, but maybe Gomez & 2 decent prospects wouldn't be. Then again, would Philly even remotely consider taking a deal like that? I'd doubt it.

As nate82 mentioned, Hart's NTC stipulates any team whose ST is in FL is a no-go.

Of course, many, many guys fizzle quickly as they age. But really, any sort of move involves a roll of the dice on some level. Whether the dice get rolled depends on DM's comfort level w/ the risk and the other needs/circumstances at the time.

I do think that if DM somehow landed Cliff Lee, Brewer Nation would collectively flip, & probably mostly for the positive. Sure, he's 34, but he's a year younger than Halladay, signed for 2 years longer, and has 800 fewer MLB innings on his arm.

One of the gurus on this board corrected me once when I commented on Harts no-trade provision. I believe he stated that the provision was only for a year or two, and that it's now gone. I may be wrong.

I thought the same thing but it looks as though it goes until the trading deadline if this year. I swore it was over after last season but I can't find where i read that. Right now all the reports say it is still in effect.

Assuming we are not done with possible additions to the rotation, I could see the Brewers targeting Cliff Lee as long as Philly is willing to pay some of his salary. 3 years @ $75 million left on his deal, with a 4th year vesting option at $27.5 million if he pitches 200 innings in 2015 or 400 innings in 2014-2015. If the Phillies were to say offer $27.5 million to cover the possible vesting option, I would be very willing to part with some talent to get Lee. Going Lee & Gallardo #1-#2 obviously enhances the chances for the Brewers to make the postseason and win. Not sure what Philly would be interested in but they are getting old quick at 1B, 2B & SS.

Scary thought... they still owe Howard 105 million over the next 4+ years.

So MLBTR reports the Phillies are looking for a Corner OF and one from the RH side. Add they have a luxury tax threshold they want to remain under(apparently 7mil to the good at the moment) Oddly enough, a Hart trade for a Roy Halladay could be plausible. As Brewers have thrown the 20mil/yr offers to Prince/Grienke a 20M Halladay for 2years must be doable. Meanwhile, Philly gets their OF/RH bat, reduces their payroll, and they'd have 15mil to work with to replace Halladay. Brewers get the 200IN pitcher looking for.

Not that I want this trade to happen or think it will, but under the Phillies circumstances this idea of Hart to Phillies is plausible.

Again no it is not even remotely plausible as Hart would have to waive his no trade and the same with Halladay. With Halladay if you do not have your spring training facilities in FL you are on his no trade list and for Hart if a team has their spring training facilities in FL they are on his no trade list. So unless the Brewers are moving their spring training facilities to FL there is no way the Brewers can trade for Halladay as he won't waive his no trade clause this is actually the reason why the Brewers were not able to obtain Halladay from the Blue Jays a deal was in place for Halladay but he would not waive his no trade policy because the Brewers have their spring training facilities in AZ. Hart is also not going to waive his no trade clause either to play for the Phillies as they have their spring training facilities in FL.
