Gamel for Pitching

Recommended Posts

Gamel's basically become Bryan LaHair. I don't think he's got that much trade value until he starts putting up numbers in the big leagues. To do so, he now needs someone else to get injured. Nobody is going to give him an everyday job, with less than 250 major league AB's 4 months short of his 28th birthday.

i would love to trade him for norris but what would the astros do with him? they just signed carlos pena yesterday to split 1b and dh duties with brett wallace. i love the awesome catching depth(for once but maldy might be one of our best trade chips. tampa bay NEEDS help at 1b and catcher badly. maybe flip them for alex cobb and a bp arm like frank de los santos, enny romero, or brandon gomes. or maybe both for hellickson(!)

I really like Gamel. The thing I was looking forward to more than anything else about the Brewers 2011 season was that he was finally gonna get his chance and he was gonna get 600 plate appearances to either sink or swim. And then what happened happened. And as much as I still believe in the guy I just can't see how he has any value around the league.

One of the toughest jobs in baseball is coming off the bench and producing. I don't see a ton of AB's for Gamel with this lineup. Maybe a day here and there giving A Ram or Hart a rest or the usual 8-10 games when Braun tweaks something on a swing plus some DH'ing in AL parks. The rest will all be pinch hitting. Overall, maybe 200 or so AB's. I'm not expecting much, maybe .250 to .270 with 8-10 HR.

He's probably at best looking at a Greg Dobbs type career.

John, I think you're about right.

I can see Gamel getting 10-20 games started at 1B. 10-20 at 3B. Add in some DH opportunities - maybe another 10-15 starts. That's 30-55 starts. Plus pinch hitting. Mat (or someone in his place) could easily get 200-250 ABs (assuming he produces). A significant injury would only increase those numbers. If he could hit .270 and get 8-10 HR in that setting, he'd be really valuable. Ishikawa and Green combined to have 255 ABs, 7 HR and a .227 BA.

I'd also like to point out that getting Gamel some decent at bats will give us a better feel for if he could handle 1B full time in 2014, when Hart is a potential free agent. How Mat plays (as well as Hunter Morris at AAA) will influence if we want to give Hart a contract extension.

If Gamel is the primary backup at 1B, 3B, LF, RF, the odds that someone gets hurt at one of those positions is pretty high. The question would be, while Gamel may be the day-to-day backup at those positions, would he be the everyday backup? For instance, would the Brewers trust his defense at 3B for a month or two, or would they go with Green or Bianchi. Same in the corner OF, would Gamel play over Schafer?

Plus, we have the obligitory "it's early in the offseason and anything can happen" point. I doubt Gamel will be traded, because as others have said his trade value is basically zero. However, the two most logical players the Brewers could trade (should they go that route) would be Hart or Gomez. If either of them go, Gamel should get additional playing time.

The stats speak for themselves regarding the Brewer offense but from my point of view the Brewer lineup can be pitched to (except for Braun). I think its a big mistake to assume just because we were ranked what #1 or #2 in runs last year that we'll do that again. If you can upgrade an offensive position you definitely do it you don't have to trade or buy the farm.

I highly doubt he gets anything good in return, but they should probably just trade him at this point. He's always had a reputation as being a horrible defender, so I don't see how he's going to be useful as a supersub, and he just doesn't seem to be a great hitter at the MLB level to justify a full-time bench role.

If they literally can't get anything in return, then obviously might as well keep him in the system, but I would consider trading him for an upside guy at A+ or something.

Bench players in MLB don't hit nearly as well as Gamel.

He has a career .296 wOBA, which is pretty bad for a 1B/OF. Granted it's still a small sample, but he has had brief chances across four consecutive seasons and just has never looked that good, imo, not even in small bursts. Yeah his minor league numbers are solid, but that doesn't always translate.

In contrast, for example, Ishikawa has a career .320 wOBA and is a plus defender at 1B.

But no Gamel should not be the 3B back up over Green. That is just insane.

Green is no lock to make the team. Bianchi had a better year than Green did at AAA, and can play all 3 infield positions. They already have 2 LH hitting bench players in Gamel and Schafer. Obviously you don't start Gamel at 3B when Narveson is starting, and he wouldn't be a guy you'd want out there over an extended period but they can get by playing him there occasionally to rest Ramirez and get Gamel's bat in the lineup.

I think endaround was responding to my earlier post where I pondered who would be the long-term answer should a player get injured. If Ramirez needs a day off, then Gamel could probably fill in at 3B. If Ramirez gets hurt for an extended period, then it may make sense to play Green as the everyday 3B until Ramirez returned, even if this means calling him up from AAA.

As much as it stinks for Green, you are probably right that from the Brewers perspective it will make sense to send Green back to AAA to play everyday. I just hope that when/if Weeks or Ramirez gets hurt Green is given an everyday shot with the Brewers to see how he handles it. All things staying the same as they are now, Bianchi will probably make the roster over Green, largely because he could backup SS. If Gonzalez returns as a backup, it would be interesting to see how the bench lines up.
