No way would I want us to have grabbed any of the players that have been grabbed so far.... would not have been the right move for the cost.

You think 2/8 for Burnett was a bad cost move? I think that's been one of the best value signings of the FA period. (JMO)

That's a valid example for sure! Maybe my previous statement was a bit aggressive. I just don't know if it's a wise move for us, that's all. I'd rather save the little extra money we have and grab a starter (as I've stated before, I'm all for going after a couple high risk, low cost guys to see if we can strike gold to go along with our young guys). Just my opinion as well :)

No, I agree with you completely. Definitely. And Monty's made a great point. My post was more of a passing thought/question. I thought that was a great contract for the Angels for what Burnett can do. But while that contract (IMO) was a good value - in context of the salaries we are seeing - it still appears to be more than the Brewers can handle. Monty broke it down nicely, pointing out that even 4 million would represent 5% of the overall payroll.

Has any team put an offer out to Krod? I haven't seen his name anywhere.

Guys that beat up women tend not to be too popular on the free agent market.

Guys that beat up women and can't find an open hospital to take her -- all the more apropos after spending most of the season not finding the plate often enough (i.e., putrid walk rate) -- aren't coming back to MIL and maybe not to any other MLB team, either.

Why? At some point, character flaws can't be ignored, and with respect to K-Rod, to quote great philosopher Forrest Gump, "Stupid is as stupid does."

Brett Myers seems to do ok. I think I recall his name even being brought up on BF.net recently as a FA SP to possibly target.

front office should have put out 14 press releases and a 25 min highlight video of the 17 year old Dominican kid they just signed to appease the grumpy brewer fan masses and cover up the fact that doug has been sitting in his basement waiting for the phone(which probably has the ringer turned off) to ring. its still pretty early guys.

The more I think about things the more I believe that doing 'nothing' is probably the best thing for the Brewers.

The offense is mostly set, but pitching is so full of question marks. I don't even think the Crew really knows what they have in most of their pitchers. Axford, Fiers, Estrada, Peralta, Thornburg, Henderson, Rogers, Kintzler, Narveson - it's a list of guys who have all had success - even if limited - in some fashion over the past year or two. But they've also struggled. (And there's a host of minor league young power arms that we've picked up over the last year that could produce an arm or two in the bullpen). But what are they going forward? There's a lot of promise here, but I don't think anyone would be shocked if any of these guys did poorly in 2013. But I don't think anyone would be shocked if any of these guys did well (or even just average, which is all we need in some cases) - even exceptional. It's simply a tough group to predict.

Lots of things have to come together for the team to do well in 2013. It's not impossible. And it doesn't have to be perfect. Not everyone has to succeed. This team can take a couple of months and see how guys perform and see where we are at in the standing. By not overspending now, we can then make roster adjustments if we feel we can make a run at the playoffs.

Odds are that some guys will succeed, while some will fail. We just have to have more success stories than failures. But having the financial flexibility will be invaluable if we do see an opportunity.

I think we can still make a few moves in the off season. A back end starter at a reasonable price would help mitigate some of the risk of using two rookies in the rotation. And hedge against injuries (which will likely happen at some point). A right handed bench bat with a little pop would be nice. And relievers are so volatile, it wouldn't be bad to add some low cost guys.

But for now, doing nothing is really just waiting for some guys to fall into the bargain bin. That's the time to make a move. It then leaves the club open to further roster moves, depending how the first 1/3 of 2013 goes.

The key for the Brewers is to keep roster flexibility as much as possible - be able to add a piece or make roster changes without worrying about payroll significance. Had the Brewers already signed a FA pitcher for the money the ones who've signed have commanded, the Brewers would have found themselves with no room to add other pieces in trades that would add payroll.

The current roster, as constructed, has several positions that the Brewers could trade from in order to acquire pitching. I'd argue their offense is more than good enough to contend, and their defense is better than it's been previously. The glut of OF/corner IF players on the Brewer 40-man along with a pile of young pitching could be used by Melvin to add quality relief or a veteran starting pitcher to improve the roster. That's how Melvin needs to improve this Brewers team, and he's needed to wait for the FA dominos to start falling before getting started with trades.
