Sanchez will be 29 on opening day. I'm not sure why 5 years is so ridiculous. Obviously injury is a risk but age shouldn't catch up to him too badly before the contract runs out.

Not going to argue Felix or even Sabathia, but you can very-much make the case that Gallardo has been on par, or even better in certain areas than Matt Cain. And Gallardo being two years younger, I'm betting he'd top what Sanchez just got from a number of clubs.

Anibal Sanchez - S - Tigers

 

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the Tigers have upped their offer to Anibal Sanchez.

What's not clear is if they've sweetened their four-year offer or given the fifth year that Sanchez wants. The Cubs have offered the right-hander a five-year, $75 million deal, but he'll re-sign with the Tigers if they agree to match the offer. Sanchez seems likely to make a decision sometime Thursday.

Absolutely! Imagine this pitching staff without Yo.

 

While Yo is not a #1, Greinke, who certainly wasn't significantly better or worse than Yo when he was in Milwaukee, just got 6/$147m. I would be doing backflips if it was announced tomorrow that Yo signed a contract extension for 5/$75m.

This is a bargain for the Cubs. The guy has been as good as Greinke over the last 3 years, and he just signed for 60$ of Greinke's annual salary. Good signing for the Cubs...it pains me to say that

If he were a free agent, I'd do 5/$75MM for Gallardo. Dude's will hit 27 in a few months and has made at least 30 starts for 4 straight years. I guess, if you have to go 5 years for a pitcher, that's the type you'd do it for.

That said, I still don't like more than 3 years for pitchers.

Gallardo would be an easy sign at that price and I agree with the guy who said he compares very favorably to Matt Cain. You have to always keep in mind Gallardo plays in a hitters park, in a hitters division with a bad defense behind him so the ERA is going to be higher than the talent.

I would do that deal for Gallardo in a heartbeat. If the Cubs get Sanchez for that it is nice deal. I know his numbers are nice but for whatever reason I dont flip over Sanchez as a top end starter, but everything say I am wrong

Gallardo >> Sanchez, in my opinion, so yeah, I'd extend Gallardo at that price in a heartbeat if he was foolish enough to accept it.

 

Doesn't Sanchez already have a surgically repaired labrum? The 15 million per year I can understand because that seems to be the going rate for pitchers of his caliber, but the length of the contract is the issue I have. He's a good starting pitcher, but I wouldn't want to hitch my wagon to him for half a decade's worth of guaranteed money.

 

Free agency has officially entered silly season, IMO. Big market teams are completely blowing small and mid market teams out of the water, even moreso than prior offseasons.

My point on asking if posters here would do 5/75 for Yo was in response to the posts that said this was a silly deal for the Cubs or Tigers since Sanchez's numbers compare very favorably to Gallardo's.

Only if you believe they are very comparable. Sanchez has a career 4.07 xFIP compared to Gallardo's 3.50, the Sierra is also 0.40 higher. Sanchez has played in a park that eats a lot of his mistakes for him which has led to comparable ERAs but the skills aren't the same. Gallardo is also 2 years younger. If Sanchez is really worth $15 a year than Gallardo is worth at least $20 a year right now.
