Ryan Dempster to Red Sox, 2 years, $26.5 million

Invader3K
I could see Melvin going for a high-risk guy on a one year deal. Erik Bedard maybe?

Bedard would not be high risk. He was released last August and no one signed him. He could easily be had on a minor league deal. No risk at all.

High-risk in the sense of him being the only SP addition and having the potential to get injured or not perform well. I wouldn't give him a big contract.

I agree... Wow Doug, what a wonderful Off-season plan of doing nothing you have!! BRAVO!! We'll be lucky to finish above the Cubs for last place.

Doing nothing is miles better than overspending just because spending money is the thing some fans think GMs are supposed to do.

This is great news. I haven't been as happy for another team signing a guy since the Giants signed Dave Roberts.

I agree, except I haven't been as happy for another team signing a guy since the Twins signed Pavano.

I guess that is why you are not in charge of MA money. DM will let the music stop and if there is someone out there that he likes without a seat he can bring him in on the cheap and they can compete with: Gallardo, Estrada, Fiers, Peralta, Rogers, Thornburg, Narveson. I'm thinking we end up sending over an inconsequential piece for one of the Dodgers extra pitchers.

I really think the focus should be on getting great pitching and average to above average offense, not the other way around.

This is exactly how I feel as well.

edit. I don't mean to suggest Dempster is elite by any stretch I was speaking more to my general team builing philosophy.... pitching > hitting > relievers.

Pitching is less reliable, more expensive to develop and more scarce than hitting so it isn't as easy as just snapping your fingers. When you combine it with a bad defensive team in a hitters park it gets even less reliable. If you have great defense the quality of pitching means a ton less as well so for my money I'd just assume start with a base team that plays good defense and can hit and then I can fix the pitching and bullpen while spending a lot less.
