Reds Acquire Big League Choo

Rumors were Choo and Donald to the Reds. Didi Gregorious going to the D'Backs and Stubbs and one of Patrick Corbin or Trevor Bauer going to the Indians.

The Reds plan on playing Choo in CF, which has disaster written all over it.

Love this deal from Cleveland's perspective. Bauer is going to be a very good pitcher and Choo is an aging/poor defending/inconsistent outfielder. Stubbs has a great glove, but could benefit from some coaching. He strikes me as a slightly more powerful Gomez. This clearly adds to the Reds 'all in' goals right now, but I just don't think they've made wise moves over the past 12 months and it will come back to bite them.

Can anyone tell me why the Dbacks have soured on Bauer so much? Like the trade for the Indians...

They have makeup issues with him or something. Seems like that would be something you look at before you draft a guy. Of course the D'Backs seem to have problem with all of their players' makeup.

Give me Segura! SS is hard to come by and rumors are that Bauer may have "some issues" While i like him i'd much rather have what we have right now at SS!

The only issue is that Bauer doesn't want to change his pregame routine that is the issue with the Dbacks and Bauer. I would still rather have Segura than Bauer.

I don't trust Bauer, especially since they were trading him after the injury. Choo in CF is a pretty bad idea so I don't see how this helps the Reds all that much. If they had a real CF and he was playing in a corner OF I like him a lot more than Stubbs.

arizona is crazy for doing this trade! didi is a nice prospect but is nowhere near the impact talent that bauer is. unless they know that bauers arm is about to fall off, they could have gotten someone at didis level for less. they probably would have been better off working la into the trade and gotten dee gordon. they didnt need lars anderson at all and the bullpen arm they got is way worse then the two they gave up. even though stubbs is crap this is a total win for the indians. i hope jay bruce, heisey and ludwick have been working on their cardio because with choo in center there is going to be a lot of ground to cover.

Dee Gordon will be out of baseball in 4 years~. He has no value. Having said that Stubbs is living off of a year where he massively overproduced and doesn't have a lot of value himself. This deal is swapping a bunch of mediocre overrated players for each other.

I like this for the Indians. I think Bauer will be a stud. Just because Arizona was looking to get rid of him doesn't necessarily mean they know something the rest of the league doesn't. Could just be that they don't have enough patience to work with the kid. Perhaps they've forgotten he's all of 21, and hasn't really faced an ounce of failure as a baseball player.

I don't get it. So Bauer was hotheaded within the organization? You trade him away for a guy the GM relates as Jeter? But will likely never see .300 in any season.

It almost seems questionable Didi is of ML caliber. Defensively reads yes, Offensively though is another story. Bauer a guy drafted in 2011, pitched for your team 2012, and you deal him away? This has Cliff Lee all over it for Cleveland. Only Arz got nothing in return! Heck, if you're going to get nothing in return, why not ask for an exception to put Bauer back in the draft for a compensation 1st rd pick? Not that is allowed but Bauer would go #1. Arz would get a 40s-60s pick that may actually make the team....well Didi has to play now...when its awful...man Arizona is just going to burst in flames from within. The turmoil will ruin the club for a few seasons....who knows and beyond? With all these 1-sided trades this year how can the Brewers not possibly get in on this?

Choo in CF is gonna be hilarious. Although the Reds lineup is incredibly good now from top to bottom.

Bruce played more CF in the minors than RF so he could well end up there. They gave up defense but with a rotation that includes Latos, Cueto, Bailey and now Chapman, there are not going to be a lot of ball smoked into gaps, and GAB is a small ballpark any way. Choo is an enormous offensive upgrade over Stubbs.

Cleveland made out like bandits in this deal. They gained a good defensive CF, who could still see some improvement in his offense. Stubbs has posted some solid WAR in his career and is still cheap and controllable. Stubbs could post a better WAR in 2013 than Choo, and it wouldn't surprise me in the least. Cleveland getting Bauer is just icing on the cake. I think they would have been happy just getting Stubbs for Choo straight up when factoring in cost and controllable years.

Choo does give the Reds a much needed high OBP to put near the top of their lineup so I can understand their reasoning for the deal.

I have no idea what Towers was thinking. I understand the need for good defense, but this just seems like a terrible deal for the D-Backs.

If Baker went

Choo

Phillips

Votto

Bruce

That's a rough 1-4 for any pitcher to face. If Ludwick can get close to his numbers of last year while batting 5th, the Reds will score lots of runs.
