It's also funny that Greinke is getting this boatload of cash to be a #2 starter behind Kershaw. Imagine what someone like Verlander or Hernandez would get on the open market right now. The Dodgers also apparently haven't ruled out also signing Anibal Sanchez, which would be absolutely ridiculous.

Can we please stop being fooled every time we hear a player is "different" about where he wants to sign?

"It's not about the money with Zack, he doesn't want to play in a big market."

It's always about the money. It's always about getting top dollar for the top free agents. That's why they go to free agency. It was that way with CC, it was that way with Prince, it was that way with Greinke, and it will be that way with the next top FA to leave Milwaukee.

This contract being given to Greinke is just ridiculous. $24.5 million a year....for him? He's a really good pitcher, but that's ace money.

King Felix and Justin Verlander are smiling somewhere. Both will see offers of near $30 million. Just insane.

Well, things can sure change in a day. The best part of this news is that Hamilton will now likely return to Texas, so those rumors can end. Also, the Dodgers payroll is now close to $225 million.

Considering their TV contract, they should still have funds available to get Hamilton also? Not sure if they will, but they probably could.

well bye bye some people always expected this all along.

well now it time for our young arms to prove theri worth.

Still think DM will add a veteran near spring training looking for a job.

I also glad DM was not stupis to go 3 years with a guy like Dempster.

Just to play devil's advocate, but there are other factors that could have influenced Greinke going to the Dodgers, like a pitcher-friendly stadium, not having the "ace" pressure, playing for a historic franchise. Certainly the money doesn't hurt, but I'm not aware of any competing offers that were leaked anywhere either.

The Dodgers are not exactly a high stress environment. I honest believe he would have chosen this deal for the Dodgers over a slightly higher cash deal from NYY or BOS. Players do sign for more than money but the money does have to be there. Not like he was going to take 2 years at $15 just because he likes Milwaukee. We would have had to be in the same ballpark to have a shot.

I think most people were pretty realistic once we hit mid-season and he hadn't been re-signed yet. I didn't hear from many fans claiming we could re-sign him this winter either.

The bad news depending on how you feel about him is now the Dodgers have Greinke, they won't have any interest in Dempster. I think Dempster held out for 3 years because he was waiting on the Dodgers. He had made it clear when the Cubs shopped him last year that LA was his preference (his best bud is Ted Lilly) Now he'll likely settle for 2 years and the Brewers seem to be in the prime position.

Speaking of Lilly, I'm sure he'd be available cheap. He's owed $12 million, but Dodgers would have to eat a lot of that to move him. I don't think the Brewers need 2 old guys, but Lilly's presence might enable them to land Dempster at a bit of a discount. Narveson for Lilly with Dodgers picking up half his salary? Both guys coming of shoulder problems and said to be healthy.

Dempster's very attractive on a 2-year deal. I'd project a 3.75 ERA or so in about 200 innings, which would slide him into the rotation behind Gallardo and maybe Fiers. If he can be had for 2 years and about 20 million or a bit more that's a very good deal for the Brewers.

That's a major chunk of cash for a guy that isn't anywhere near as valuable as a Verlander or a Hernandez. I don't think it's necessarily a bad deal for the Dodgers but it would be a terrible one for the Brewers.
