I like this deal for the Twins. I like Revere as well but I think that is giving up a lot for him.

Great trade for Minnesota as Revere is highly overrated as a player. No power whatsoever and doesnt walk much. He is really fast but to get a starting pitcher and another pitcher with high upside is really a good deal. Just odd they also traded Span

I don't think May is as highly rated as he once was. He wasn't even rated in the top 20 in the league he played in at the end of the season.

 

And speaking of a bit overrated, Vance Worley fits that bill.

Even if he isnt I am not sure what the equivalent of this trade from the Brewers perspective would be - Fiers and Nelson for Revere. Worley is better than Fiers but we dont really have anyone in that mold. Even Fiers and Nelson would be way too much in my mind for Revere

No, I understand your point, but that's sort of apples and oranges. The Phils are/were desperate for an everyday CF. The Brewers would never be put in a position to have to make that same deal.

 

The Phils don't want to sign Bourn to an albatross contract. So they got Revere for Worley to give them $$$ flexibility. They also seem to have other pitching prospects that they feel better about than May.

I guess if you want to trade for a center fielder instead of paying big to sign one, you call the Twins.

I don't see how Twins fans can get that upset about this. This looks like a pretty solid trade. Very different from the Marlins' latest fire sale.

Briggs, how closely are you looking at the Twins? The Twins were really good 3 years ago but putrid the past 2. How is that relevant? The GOOD team of '10 was largely there from what Terry Ryan built. Bill Smith's ineptness as a GM is largely what put them in the tank. Now Terry Ryan's the GM and clearly has a solid plan for how to build the Twins back into contenders.

 

If this were a sell-off, Mauer, Morneau, Willingham, Doumit, & anyone else making big money would be gone. They didn't trade their highest paid players. They traded from strength (top couple Twins prospects are OFs including Aaron Hicks who may be given a chance to be the starting CF) to fill a long-festering need (good pitching).

 

Worley has as much or slightly more MLB experience than Revere. Plus the Twins got another strong young pitcher in the deal.

 

Unlike the Marlins, the Twins want to keep identifiable "core" players and use other assets to shore up weaknesses. Otherwise Joe Mauer would've already had his "welcome to town" press conference in Boston (ignoring, of course, his no-trade clause).

overreact much? The difference is they still have their franchise player and they are active on the pitching free agent market. The only difference between what the the Twins are doing now compared to what the Brewers did two years ago with the Marcum/Greinke trades is instead of trading their young affordable position prospects for pricey veteran starters with only a couple years of control they are trading them for young affordable pitching prospects. Obviously, this is riskier but the posibility if it works out is that their future rotation could stay together a lot longer than the 1-2 yr window the Brewers rotation had from those trades.

That would've been a horrendous deal from MKE's perspective. IMO, Gomez has (or should have) way more value than Worley and May.

It would have been horrendous for the Phillies. I think Gomez is better than Revere, but it's 1 year of team control (Gomez) versus 4-5 (Revere).

 

Worley is a very solid pitcher who is cheap and under team control, not sure why you don't think he's worth anything. I would certainly rather have Worley than any free agent not named Zack Greinke.

So who is playing center now for the Twins? I know they have a pretty good CF in AA but i would hope they find a stop gap and just don't hand over the CF duty to him? Personally love the trade for the Twins and i think that Worley could actually pitch better at Target Field.

 

As for trading Gomez for that package. I'd think about it but i'd still be trying to sign him to a long term deal if he has anything close to the season he had last year he will be wanted on the FA market!

Gomez is looking at $15 million or more a year in free agency if he repeats his season. Look at what Upton and Victorino got.

It's another Phillies Big Spender vs Small Market Twins deal. Both Span/Revere are gone. but they both didn't offer much beyond speed. Getting Pitching in return under control and likely to be used now/within end of next season is a great deal for Min. Let's face it. Bourne-Span-Revere. Do you see much difference in the three? The biggest is price. So it's a good deal for Philly too.

 

Now would I let go Gomez for Worley/May? Considering how our pitching stands and having Aoki/Schafer. Yes I'd do it in a heartbeat. For 1yr of Gomez though Philly wouldn't throw in May, and May just may have been the only piece to take Gomez away no Worley. It's a scary thought of Gomez going on FA next year and like above said having 13-15mil thrown at him. I really hope the Brewers can trade him by the deadline. I fear a QO may get accepted by Gomez and the money spent then on him would be devastating to the payroll. These trades by Minnesota obviously make a Gomez deal less likely before ST so I don't see my hopes being fulfilled. I don't know what it is but Gomez just rubs me the wrong way.

If you think this deal is about being a big spender it shows you are completely biased going into the discussion. There is no big spending when you talk Span or Revere.
