Rule 5 Draft

Anyone appeal to you guys? Josh Fields and a couple of the RH bats caught my eye.

Fields, mostly. It seemed like half the bats are 1Bs, which at this point wouldn't do us any good.

 

Mainly I find myself really hoping we don't lose Heckathorn, though if they rank him that highly on something like that, I'd guess the odds are pretty good he gets taken . . . though of course he'd still have to stick on the drafting team's 25-man or he's ours again.

Losing Heckathorn is my main concern as well. I'm still bitter about losing Luetge a year ago...

I'm not sure why Heckathorn is a concern. It concerns me that he's lost 7 mph off his fastball since college, can't strike guys out, and continually gets shelled. If another organization can turn him into a big leaguer--or even AAA/AA fodder--then he's better off in the other organization. He's behind so many other pitchers here that his chances of seeing the big leagues are probably less than 5%, and his chances of being effective are less than that. Manny Parra has a much better track record, much better stuff, and throws lefty, and he's being phased out. Heckathorn likely will never be as effective as Parra, Loe, or Veras, seeing as he has had little minor league success to speak of. I'm more concerned about Wooten being taken, as I think he has a legitimate shot to be an effective big league reliever.

Living in San Antonio, I've watched Freiman play. Great bat, really great pop, pretty good D at first. He's tall (6'6, I believe), but I don't see the Brewers really having interest, as he's only a first baseman.

I think the Brewers if they make a pick it will be an arm that they can fit into the Pen.

Brewers have a big powerfully built 1st baseman with some pop, who kept Morris at AA all last year, the overlooked Sean Halton. If he's not taken in the Rule 5, the Brewers will have to decide whether to deal him or move him to another position (he played one game at 3B last year) to make room for Morris in Nashville.

I'd think they've got to take a chance on one of the harder throwing relievers, preferably a lefty. They have plenty of open spots in the pen. Unless I'm forgetting about somebody, it seems like a long time since the Brewers have had a hit on the Rule 5, probably 20 years ago when they snagged Graeme Lloyd. The only two that I remember since then have been Al Reyes and Enrique Cruz.

Yeah, I don't care about Heckathorn. He's been extremely underwhelming since being drafted.

 

I'll be interested to see if a scrub team takes Destin Hood for a test drive. His tools were off the charts when drafted, and he could be a very useful player if he ever figures it out (unlikely I know, but a decent gamble IMO).

For some reason Matt Ford always sticks out in my mind as well. If I recall correctly he was able to stick around in the bull pen the whole season and actually got a decent workload.

He started the year in the bullpen. Was moved to the rotation. Made a few terrible starts. Was placed on the DL and was never heard from again.

I believe Jose Mercedes was a rule V pick as well. I remember Matt Williams, but don't think he appeared for us

Matt Ford and Enrique Cruz were both on the 2003 team. We were so bereft of talent that two Rule 5 picks made it to the 25 man roster. Ford did pretty well in mop up duty and ended up in the rotation. I can remember sitting through one of his starts after making the 3.5 hour drive to Milwaukee.

 

I think that Matt Williams was Dean Taylor's Rule 5 pick. He made the team out of spring training as a lefty specialist but couldn't throw a strike and got shipped back to the Yankees.
