2012-2013 College Basketball thread

Not sure what happened yesterday, after the hot start, it was like someone flipped a switch and it was over. Purdue is not a good team and they completely outworked and out hustled the Badgers in the last 25 minutes. UW simply doesn't have enough talent for that to happen. Bad, bad loss. Ends the Big Ten title hopes, definitely hurts their seeding as Purdue is under .500 and it COULD drop them out of the top 4 of the Big Ten if some other games don't go their way. Surprising to say the least.

We'll see how they perform at MSU, hopefully they compete. Hopefully they didn't peak too early.

What happened was UW's best three scorers couldn't get their hands on the ball in position to score. Jackson started hogging the ball, and turning it over, and Bo yanked Marshall twice almost immediately after he came in.

I'm pretty sure Dekker only had 1 second half shot before the final minute or so, and that was on an offensive rebound. I don't think hustle had anything to do with it, it was horrible defensive adjustments (Yes, when they ball screen 10 feet from the basket, you need to switch and step up and contest the shot Ryan Evans) and once again showing the inability of anyone other than Dekker to throw the ball into the post (seriously, why is that?).

It was not Jackson's fault no one moved to receive the ball. They missed a ton of open shots. It was just a lazy effort all around. Chalk it up to not being ready to play and thinking you can coast when you've got a lead.

An average offensive team was hot early then went cold. That's why they are average. What really killed them is not stopping the lane penetration in the second half. It seemed like the Purdue possession was either a floater in the lane or a Byrd three.

Still about 16 minutes left but Marquette is playing some awful basketball tonight. It's reminding me exactly of the WI game on Sunday. They just like they are going through the motions against a very bad team...Rutgers is under .500.

Edit: Unlike the Badgers, Marquette got it together and came back to win and avoid the embarassing loss. Indiana just lost to OSU at home. Had the Badgers not blown it against Purdue or Minn, they'd have real title hopes. Bummer. Also now need a win at MSU or an upset to keep the top 4 streak alive.

Not really expecting a win, but I'm still really getting excited for the UW-MSU game tonight. I'll be very interested to see how Dekker plays in his first visit to the Breslin.

Between the Purdue game and this; it is getting hard not to see the badgers as a ripe 1st round upset in the NCAA tourney. When they are playing well they can beat anybody; but if they are playing like this they could easily lose to any team not a 16 seed. I was actually worried that they might not break 30.

Yeah, that GB game was a brutal way for a season to end. Up 4 with 10 seconds left. Ouch.

Marquette won a share of the title, yes. Still pretty impressive regardless. The team was barely picked to finish in the top half of the conference this year. Great job by Buzz Williams. They do still seem to struggle closing out games. I can think of at least 3 times now....the game at Pitt, yesterday and the game against Georgetown where I thought for sure the game was over, only to have them basically hand it back to a team. Two of those went to OT and they were fortunate enough to win, but I'd like to see them finish teams off. Still a big win.

Hopefully the Badgers can remember how to put the ball in the basket today.

I think I have this Badgers team figured out. When you expect nothing out of them, they will come through. When you expect something out of them, they will fail. I'm expecting either a first round NCAA Tourney loss or an Elite 8 appearance.

The fact that Jackson made a tough shot really covers up the fact that Mike Bruesewitz once again screwed up an inbounds pass with the game on the line....TWICE.

He traveled on an in bounds against MN, when we were up 2 with 20 seconds left. They tie it, we lose. Today, he throws it clear out of bounds up 2, they tie it. Then on the ensuing inbounds, he rolls it when Jackson was clearly expecting a hard pass he could run with, and we were exceptionally lucky to still have the arrow.

He's a senior, with plenty of experience and these types of mistakes just simply can't happen.

It's hard for me to cheer for IU right now, but it would be nice to finish top 4 again, get the bye and avoid a rematch with PSU, who very clearly could have beaten WI today.

What's even worse about the Brusewitz play is that in the post game press conference Bo talked about how they practice that end of game play quite often. I'm really getting sick of Brusewitz getting playing time, he doesn't really bring anything to the table.

Bo can't not-play both Bruiser and Evans. He has no one else to man the 4, really... unless he goes crazy small and plays Dekker there. Bruiser rebounds and plays good defense. The problem is he has no idea he can't make 3's and he keeps on taking them.

It's been 11 years for Bo, and they still can't run an inbounds play. I don't know why that is, but his teams have always been that way.

Evans should play the 4. He should also realize he is the 4th best option on the court offensively. If he just played defense and rebounded they would be better off. Slide Dekker into the 3. His defense needs work but he can score. Bo is extremely loyal so it wont happen, but I would like to see Bruiser stay the starter but sub out at the first media timeout and then return to spell Evans or Dekker when needed

And Marquette wins the Big East in their rebuilding year. Nice.

Three-way shared title, correct?

Were you asking because you didn't actually know or because you wanted to diminish their accomplishment?

Not that sharing the title does. It would have been nice to see them win that last game outright, but you have to be impressed with what they have done this year.

Because I thought I caught that on the ESPN ticker, but wasn't sure.

IMO; the next 2 weeks are the best 2 weeks of sports all year. Then right after that it is MLB opening day. Doesn't get much better than this.

I am going to stay the heck away from UW in all of my brackets; Marquette it completely depends on match ups. I know UW will probably end up making the Sweet 16 like they always do do this years team has way to many flaws for me to have any confidence in them.

This years bracket is just going to be a complete crapshoot. There are probably 15 teams that could win it all and every single one of them could probably lose the 1st weekend too. Should be fun

I have never been so happy to see a senior class graduate and leave a program as I am for this WI Basketball class. I have never been a believer in the "this is the year Ryan Evans breaks out" that is supposed to happen every year, he is a bench/role player at best. Evans and Bruiser should never be on the court at the same time. Bergerran is solid defensively but has never really blossomed on the offensive side, and the other 2 seniors never see the court unless a blowout and one of them was found via open try outs.

Seeing Decker and Jackson taking over at the end showed where the real talent on the team lies and it isn't in the senior class. Thankfully the incoming freshman class looks like they have some guys who actually want to score and aren't just gritty dive on the floor guys.
