i'm not a big techno fan but with all the hype i've heard of this guy i figured i should give it a chance. i have to say..... he's not changing my mind. what is the appeal of this stuff? if it was just about dancing i'd understand but people actually seem to like to listen to this. i'm only 26 so i doubt its because i'm too old for this stuff. what am i missing?

Skrillex!

That's the only other guy I know. What is dub step? I am old.

I was at the graduation party of a friend's son, and the kids were listening to dub step. One of the other parents looked at me and said "when our fax machine makes that sound, we know it's time for a new one". That fairly well sums up dubstep for me.

I checked out skrillex a few months back and they are just as bad. The kid ftom skrillex was in an awful punk/hardcore band called From First to Last. They opened up almost every concert i saw one summer and he danced around like a peacock. Doug Benson made a joke once saying that is favorite dubstep is any kind that is playing in a room that he is not in- pretty much sums up my thoughts on dubstep as well.

I actually feel sorry for the youth of today and the so called music they are being forced to accept as "good" or "groundbreaking."

So glad I grew up when I did, when rock and roll was actually rock and roll...

The music of today, including dub-step, disappoints me very much.

I much prefer listening to the likes of Led Zeppelin, Queen, and Pink Floyd over any of the "popular" crap of today.

There are some good rock bands out there right now. I really like Five Finger Death Punch, Halestorm, Stone Sour, and Staind.

Lzzy Hale from Halestorm reminds me a lot of Pat Benatar but with a better voice (my opinion).

Huh, that's a pretty good song. Wonder how some people believe that dubstep, Justin Bieber, and One Direction are any better than stuff like this.

Yeah, I don't think we need to argue about this...

There are few better female rock voices than Pat Benatar. Like her music or not, her voice is stellar, flawless, and very powerful. Still is to this day.

You can think what you want though, it is a free country.

I remember catching a little of the Grammys earlier this year and commenting that I can't believe I live in a world where "3-time Grammy Award winner Skrillex" is an actual thing.

But that might say more about the Grammys than anything else.

The last sentence, because 20 years ago there was no such Grammy for "Best New Electronic Artist", "Best Electronic Album", etc. There are so many different Grammy categories now that it seems like everyone and their brother gets one.

Skrillex I'm hot and cold on. He's authored two of my favorite tracks to come out the last two years ("Bangarang" and "Breakin' a Sweat (Zedd remix)"), but that may be more of a statement about what the general state of music is right now. Some of his stuff I find annoying ("Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites"). Knife Party is kind of the ultimate hot/cold with "Bonfire" - half of the song I love, half I can't stand. So I put into Goldwave and make my own edit.

Dubstep is what it is... can be used as dance music, party music, pump-up music, drug music, whatever. And it's pretty good for that. Not for everyone, of course, but no genre is.

Comparing it to Led Zeppelin and Queen is just silly, that would be like comparing Popcorn by Hot Butter to Vivaldi. (Well, maybe not that bad, but still.)

And to categorically throw all new, popular music in the trash bin is just an ignorant/old man on a stoop thing to do. If you think it's all been reduced to house music, dubstep, and autotune, you're just not paying attention. Not that you have to, I'm a huge classic rock fan, but don't knock new stuff if you haven't given it a chance and looked around a little. I happen to think that after a considerable lull from the 90's to early-2000's, the music industry has returned pretty strong.

Hopefully the radio can make a comeback. I am sick of all the 70's, 80's, and sometimes 90's rock stations first they all play the same dang songs and there are just way to many of them. I can only listen to a repeating list of KISS, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, AC/DC, and Ozzy for so long and then my ears start to bleed.

Get on Spotify or Pandora. Leave the terrestial radio behind.

The problem with that kind of programming is that they play the same 2 or 3 songs by those bands over and over instead of opening up the library and playing their entire catalog. Those bands have a lot more to offer than "Rock and Roll All Nite", Stairway to Heaven", "Shook Me All Night Long", and "Crazy Train."

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm 30 and this is the first time I've ever said to myself "I'm finally disconnected with the youth musically". Every post in this thread reads like that. I've tried to listen to various "musicians" producing this style of music and it just doesn't inspire me. I'm happy for the kids who are having a good time listening to it, and I know a lot of people who have converted to this style of music, but for me it just seems funny to be crammed in a room staring at a guy with a laptop waiting for a drop.

I remember an older generation saying similar things when I was growing up with grunge and then with hip hop. Now I'm the old guy. :embarrassed

Ya I agree I've kind of turned in to the old guy. If it wasn't for my wife, I would prob be full go in that category. It's a lot of work to find new stuff that is not made by suits or isn't way too crazy for me. I do have to say there is good new music out there, people are fighting against the industry machine, doing things their own way. I agree using things like pandora are great ways to find new music that is similar to what you like. You aren't going to find too much "real music" on the radio these days unless it's a station that supports the little guy and local artists.

I really really dislike bands that are made in the boardroom and then pimped out to make a buck.

I remember when the first popular rap song came out in 1979 or 1980. "Rapper's Delight" by The Sugarhill Gang was a bit of a novelty, but still had a nice beat to it and it was just a "fun" little song.

In the mid 2000's, my stepsons were listening to "gangsta rap" and my comment was "That's not even music", which absolutely horrified me as soon as it came out of my mouth, because those were my mother's exact words about the music my friends and I listened to as teens. Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, KISS, etc.

So, yeah... you've become your parents.

I think there should just be a few categories that we compare people in.

Musicians

Entertainers

Singers

Idiots? Just joking....but seriously

You can obviously be more than one of these things, but it's hard to compare Frank Sinatra to David Gilmour to Miley Cyrus.
