Should we bring back K-Rod next year?

HiAndTight

I wouldn't bring him back. His last 6 weeks of good work doesn't erase the first 20 in my mind. He did prove that he's not done, and worth a shot for some team, but I just can see a couple tough outings early next year becoming a "here we go again" scenario. I can see them bringing him back though. He's clearly a favorite of Roenicke.

Henderson and Kintzler showed enough that they don't need wholesale changes. The need a guy to replace K-Rod, and they need a quality lefty like a J.P. Howell. That's where I'd concentrate my resources. Let K-Rod, Loe and Parra go elsewhere and be someone else's problem.

I would be shocked of Loe or Parra are back. Axford, Kintzler, and Henderson all have a better than decent shot of staying on next year; after that it is really a crap shoot.

Given how this season went I would be shocked if Melvin didn't go out and overpay for a reliever or two.

While I agree for the most part with your post, I just can not get behind having Henderson and Kintzler in the bullpen as late inning releivers. They will be fine in replacing Loe, Parra, and Veras but thats about it.

I agree with Howell being a good piece to get for next years bullpen. I would like to see the Brewers take a chance on either Madson or Wilson. I think the Giants might let Wilson go after this season.

I'd bring K Rod back. Relievers are volatile beasts. If he was on another team he'd be exactly the type of guy Melvin would target as a buy low scrap heap candidate. I think Loe is fine in a ROOGY role as well, but I wouldn't hesitate to upgrade.

The one guy I'm done with is Parra. I have to believe we could find a better lefty arm out of the bullpen. I realize he's actually been better than most including myself will give him credit for this year, but I'd move on.

I have heard a couple people (maybe the same guy) say that Henderson and Kintzler wouldn't be good in the later innings. I'd like someone to explain why...

Some may do this but I have other reasons.

Henderson needs to cut down on his walks and I am not all that impressed with his off speed pitches. I wouldn't mind Henderson taking over what Veras job was earlier in the year it wouldn't be ideal for me but still better than Veras.

As for Kintzler I just don't see him as being a late inning reliever his stuff is just not all that great. A nice bullpen arm but I wouldn't put him in a high leverage situation.

To me either Madson or Wilson would be more ideal as the late inning pitcher. Try to strike it rich with a bounce back type of a year player. If they don't work out you cut them no big loss as neither Madson or Wilson are going to get anything more than a 1-year deal around $1-4m. This is basically the Rays way of doing things pick up a player either through a trade or FA for the bullpen and throw them at the wall and see if they stick. Fernando Rodney, Joel Peralta, and a few others that I am forgetting right now are prime examples of this. Both Rodney and Peralta were FA signings by the Rays and they both sucked or had bad years prior and the Rays just took a flier on them. If the Brewers could do a Rodney like contract with either Wilson or Madson that would be ideal.

The biggest addition should be Howell though the Brewers should try and get him as I believe he could be the guy the Brewers need in the bullpen.

3.9 walks per 9 innings isn't great but not too bad when you combine it with 40k's in 27 innings.

No walks in 23 of 33 outings and only twice has he walked more then one.

If he is our 7th inning guy we should have an excellent bullpen and I would have no problem with giving him 8th and 9th inning chances. He has shown he can handle it.

Won't Madson and Wilson be demanding too much money to consider for an 8th inning type guy? I would think they both go in the 10 million per year range... Madson possibly a little less.

Or, I may not know what I'm talking about...

Both have been injured this year. The Giants are not going to offer Wilson arbitration as Wilson is going to get a lot in arbitration and I don't see the Reds picking up his option. I also don't see any team giving Madson or Wilson 10 mil a year after they didn't even pitch a full season this year. I believe both got injured early on in the year.

Madson will be lucky to get a deal around $2-5m a year let alone $10m a year. There has been speculation that teams may stay away from Madson and he may only get a spring training invite from teams due to his injury.

I hope they don't keep K-Rod simply because I can't stand watching him pitch. For $2M for 1 year, of course it would be a good baseball move, but I'd still be upset because I'd have to watch him for another year.

At any rate, I don't see him staying. I think he'll get more money than the Brewers are willing to pay.
