2012 brewers postseason roster eligibility

djoctagone

i've been wanting to post this thread for a while, but held off until the brewers got really close to being "in it".

this is based on my understanding of postseason roster eligibility rules as of last year, so the rules may have changed.

players had to active on the brewers 25-man roster as of 31 august in order to be eligible to play on a postseason roster. if they were on the disabled list as of 31 august (15-day or 60-day) and were activated at some point before the regular season ended, they were also eligible to be on the postseason roster. (for example, last season, both rickie weeks and carlos gomez came off the disabled list in september, and they were eligible for the postseason roster).

if a player from the 31 august 25-man roster is injured and is unable to appear in a postseason series, another player within the organization as of 31 august is eligible to take his place.

as of 31 august, the brewers had three players on the disabled list. the only one with a chance to return before season's end is alex gonzalez.

that's my understanding of how postseason roster eligibility works. pretty simple.

until you bring mark rogers into the equation. rogers was on the 25-man as of 31 august, and he's eligible to be on the brewers' postseason roster. i can't imagine that he would be included, unless they started stretching him out right now.

let's assume that no other brewers are injured between now and the end of the regular season, and that corey hart returns to form. would the brewers have to put mark rogers on the disabled list if they wanted a 25th player on their postseason roster? would that replacement have to be one of the three (chris narveson, mat gamel or alex gonzalez) if one or more was able to be activated before the regular season ended, or could it be any player in the organization as of 31 august?

this discussion could also apply to the nationals and their shutting down of stephen strasburg . . . but note that the nationals activated chien-ming wang from the disabled list this month (as well as mark derosa) so one of those two could take strasburg's spot.

obviously, when the brewers decided to shut down mark rogers, 2012 postseason eligibility wasn't on their radar. this new wild card format is really going to force teams to rethink their roster planning for years to come.

Rogers would have to be put on the disabled list and then any pitcher on the 40 man roster at August 31 can replace him, I don't believe he can be replaced with a position player, maybe Gonzalez can take his spot since he was on the disabled list at August 31 but not sure.

could rogers be placed on the disabled list without a legitimate injury? do we need to create a gift registry site for him with nothing but salad tongs?

if rogers gets put on the disabled list, can't the brewers select any player in their organization as of 31 august (regardless of 40-man status at that time, provided the player's on the 40-man roster as of the postseason)?

Actually rule 40 now states Players who are on the 25-man roster, the major league DL, Suspend, Military, or the Bereavement List within a given organization on August 31 are eligible to be on that team's playoff roster. Other players are generally not eligible to be on the playoff roster. However, if a player in the organization is on the DL on August 31 and still on the DL at the end of the regular season, that player may be replaced on the playoff roster by any player that was in the organization as of August 31.

Therefore it does not appear that the roster rules are as strict as they used to be. For example Chris Narveson is eligible to be on the playoff roster but will not be so a guy like Kintzler could be added since he was in the organization at August 31. Basically they can have whatever 25 man roster they want as long as they were with the organization at August 31.

They can put Rogers on the DL with a dead arm. Many pitchers have gone on the DL for that in the past.

Outlander - Very interesting posting. This means we can basically pick any 2 active guys and replace them with anyone else as Gonzalez and Narveson are on the 60 day DL? That seems... odd.

Well...not exactly. The way I read it. For example if they wanted to replace Nyjer Morgan (not a suggestion...just stating this as an example) with someone else within the organization, they could not do that since he was not on the DL on August 31st. What I'm trying to understand and maybe it was already explained in a previous post but I just am not seeing it is what if a player that was on the 25 man roster on August 31st gets injured after August 31st and is still injured at the end of the season? Can you replace that player?

No they could replace Morgan but not sure why they would. They pick 25 from a pool greater than 25. In theory Bianchi could be picked instead of Morgan because he could take Gamel's spot.

Edit: Bianchi was on team on August 31 so bad example, but still remains that Morgan or anybody else on the team on August 31 could be left off the playoff roster because the pool to choose from is greater than 25.

my understanding is yes . . . but it needs to be a player that was part of the organization as of 31 august.

isn't that how k-rod made his debut with the angels? they purchased his contract (added him the 40-man roster) on 15 september 2002, and he appeared in the postseason for the anaheim angels.

i'm not certain of the circumstances that allowed the angels to add k-rod, but i seem to recall it was due to a player injury that occurred in september/early october.

To try to make it simple the Brewers pick their 25 man roster from a pool. The pool = 25 man roster at 8/31 + any 3 players because of Gamel/Narveson/Gonzalez on DL at 8/31 + replacements for injured players on DL after 8/31 like Rogers.

The reason I say they can have whatever 25 man roster they want is because they have three open spots for anybody in the organization if they so choose. It probably won't even matter if Rogers officially goes on the DL or not because they already have three open spots that they can use.

Ok, I think I understand now. This part that is a little confusing: However, if a player in the organization is on the DL on August 31 and still on the DL at the end of the regular season, that player may be replaced on the playoff roster by any player that was in the organization as of August 31.

Shouldn't that read: If a player is on the DL at the end of the regular season who was on the 25 man roster OR on the DL on August 31st, that player may be replaced on the 25 man playoff roster by any player that was in the organization as of August 31.

interesting read thanks to joe block's tweet. i don't have espn insider, so i don't know if the article elaborates on player eligibility, but it sounds the brewers could opt to carry up to four extra position players for the single wild card game instead of four extra starting pitchers.

The article says nothing about eligibility. Just talks about not having the WC roster carry over to the NLDS, so teams won't carry their other starting pitchers and will instead carry specialists and extra position players. Not sure how this will be possible due to eligibility reasons, so I'd like to know the actual rules on that. However, from everything I've read, it sounds like we'll be able to add 1 pitcher and 2 position players to replace Narveson, Gamel, and Gonzalez. Not sure what the rule would be if Rogers is placed on the DL also.

from tweets by tom haudricourt and mike vassallo, it appears that roster rules are special for the wild card playoff game. gives each team greater flexibility in setting the roster for that single game. i'm certain that by morning, a clear report will surface on jsonline.com.

peralta would be eligible to replace an injured player (but whether it's a position player or a pitcher apparently depends on the level of postseason play). any player in the brewers' organization as of 31 august (peralta included) could be eligible for postseason play, provided he's replacing an injured player.

presumably, an injured player is defined as being on the disabled list as of 31 august, on the disabled list by the 162nd game of the season, or deemed unavailable due to injury for an entire postseason series (i.e. isn't eligible for the division series, but could be available for the championship series).

if aoki went down with an injury, corey patterson could be a replacement in the postseason. let's pray that doesn't happen.

the tweets talked about not having to carry an entire starting rotation for a one game playoff. still waiting for a full explanation from the brewers' media, but one would think that a player like eric farris could be on the wild card playoff roster (instead of a starting pitcher) and be used as a late base stealing threat.

With Rogers shut down, Peralta not eligible, Fiers on fumes and Marcum ineffective...going to be an interesting rotation if they make it. Gallardo, Estrada and pray for rain?

You might have heard Tom Haudricort on the radio saying Peralta was not eligible but he corrected himself on Twitter. As stated already in this thread there are three spots available for anybody in the organization at 8/31 because of Gonzalez/Gamel/Narveson being on the DL.

  • 3 weeks later...

sadly, the brewers didn't get to set a postseason roster in 2012. i wanted to bring up in this thread what the four wild card teams have set for their one game roster:

cardinals: 10 pitchers, 15 position players

braves: 9 pitchers, 16 position players

rangers: 11 pitchers, 14 position players

orioles: 11 pitchers, 14 position players
