Look for Nashville and Wisconsin media notes at the links just prior to their game times.

Huntsville is posting theirs more consistently (and did so for their most recent game). Rest your pointer under the "Roster" banner on the Stars' home page shortly before game time to see the link.

My (and our) sincere thanks to the staffs in Nashville (Doug Scopel and his crew), Huntsville (Jill Cacic), and Brevard County (Kyle Smith and Frank Longobardo) -- behind the scenes, they really allow us to make this forum as timely and informational as possible.

Jeff Hem and Alex Cohen, hope you enjoyed your first seasons with the Crew. Hoping your big league broadcast dreams are fulfilled down the road, but we'll be more than happy to link to you both again in 2013.

Wisconsin and Helena, you have to wait for your thanks ;).

Sounds Drop Season Finale To Memphis, 2-1

Burgos Hurls Another Quality Start, Halton Homers For Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds closed out their 2012 season with a 2-1 loss to the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds in a Labor Day matinee in front of 3,599 fans at Greer Stadium.

The Memphis win completed the Redbirds' four-game sweep of the Sounds, marking the fourth time that Nashville was swept in a series this season.

Nashville (67-77), which went 4-4 on its season-ending homestand after sweeping Iowa during the first of the two series, finished the season with just the 13th losing record in the club's 35-year history.

Three Memphis hurlers held Nashville to only two hits in the contest, a second-inning Sean Halton homer and a third-inning Logan Schafer single. The Redbirds retired the final 19 Sounds batters in a row following Schafer's single.

Right-hander Hiram Burgos continued his strong season with another quality start for the Sounds, scattering five hits over six scoreless frames. He departed with a 1-0 lead but took a no-decision following a blown save by the bullpen.

With the effort, Burgos lowered his organization-leading ERA to 1.95 (37er/171.0ip) in 28 minor league outings. He twirled six quality starts in his eight outings for Nashville, posting a 2.91 ERA at the Triple-A level.

Memphis starter John Gast (9-5) matched Burgos' quality start effort with one of his own, picking up the victory after holding the Sounds to one run on two hits over seven innings of action.

Halton -- the 2012 Nashville team MVP -- gave the Sounds a 1-0 lead when he led off the bottom of the second inning with his team-leading 17th home run of the year, a solo shot off Memphis starter John Gast.

Nashville third baseman Andy Gonzalez kept the one-run lead intact in the fourth inning when, with runners on second and third and one out, he fielded a Jose Garcia grounder and fired plateward to cut down Brock Peterson, who had opened the inning with a single.

Immediately following Burgos' departure, Memphis rallied for a pair of runs against Amaury Rivas in the top of the seventh inning to grab a 2-1 lead.

With one out, Gast singled and moved to third on an Adron Chambers double to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Ryan Jackson slapped a game-tying groundout to second to plate Gast before Steven Hill put the visitors on top with a two-out RBI single to left.

Rivas (5-8) drew the loss for the Sounds after giving up a pair of runs in his lone frame of work.

Jorge Rondon worked 1 1/3 perfect innings of relief for Memphis, striking out three of his four batters faced, before Barrett Browning closed out the victory by retiring the final two Sounds hitters to notch his first save of the year.

Baseball returns to Greer Stadium in April 2013 when the Sounds begin their 36th season of competition. Season tickets are available now by calling 615-690-HITS or visiting the Greer Stadium box office.

Nashville Box Score

Did everyone catching this pitching article from JSO last week?

One of the better stories in the Brewers' farm system this season has been right-hander Hiram Burgos, a sixth-round draft pick in 2009 out of Bethune-Cookman University. The native of Puerto Rico had a so-so year at high Class A Brevard County in 2011, going 6-8 with a 4.89 ERA in 24 games (22 starts).

Things immediately clicked this season for Burgos, 25, upon being returned to Brevard. In seven outings (six starts), he went 2-1 with a 1.90 ERA, taking a no-hitter into the ninth inning against Clearwater before taking a very tough 1-0 loss.

Promoted to Class AA Huntsville, Burgos continued to shine, going 6-1 with a .194 ERA in 13 starts. That showing earned him yet another promotion to Class AAA Nashville, and Burgos has continued to do well, going 2-2 with a 3.35 ERA in seven starts.

Overall, Burgos is 10-4 with a 2.02 ERA in 27 games (26 starts) with only 123 hits allowed in 165 innings. He has walked only 48 while striking out 127, and opponents have batted .210 against him.

Lee Tunnell, the minor-league pitching coordinator now filling in as the Brewers' interim bullpen coach, is a big fan of Burgos.

"This year, he figured out how to use his fastball," said Tunnell. "He won't blow it by you but he'll get it under your hands and hit his spots. He just knows how to pitch."

What a year for Hiram and I'm thrilled he put an exclamation on his season by finishing so strong. Unfortunately it wasn't enough as Amaury Rivas' horrid campaign continued right to the end. The good news is that the Brewers have plenty of relief options from this AAA pitching for next season, Rob Wooten finished strong for the Sounds after some rough outings early. I'm hoping Jesus Sanchez gets a taste of the big life this week.

As I bow out of the LR for the 2012 season I'd just like to pass along some thanks.

First and foremost I'd like to thank Jim (Mass Haas) for all his extra work getting the LR started and finished each day, without him this forum wouldn't be what it is. His work initially drew me to bf.net in the first place, he's just a tremendous resource for all of us.

To all my fellow Link Reporters, thanks for a tremendous season, it was fantastic working with all of you, and at times I found myself skipping the stories and reading your comments first, it was a pleasure to read all of you all season.

I'd also like to thank everyone else who takes the time to stop by and read on a daily basis and contribute their own thoughts and observations on the Brewers' farm system, from the User Power 50, to the LRs, to the general threads in the MiLB forum.

Finally a special thank to the families of the players, I'm sure it's not easy to read negative opinions about their loved ones from internet geeks who post on a message board, but over the years we've very rarely had a family member lash out publicly on the message board. It speaks to quality of the conversation here and the quality individuals the Brewers have been bringing into the organization. It's truly a pleasure to follow and root for players who are also fine young men.

Final: Wisconsin 6 Burlington 1 (Game One)

Rattlers beat Bees in game one, clinch home field in first two rounds of playoffs

BURLINGTON, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers defeated the Burlington Bees 6-1 in game one of a doubleheader on Labor Day at Community Field. The victory let the Rattlers clinch best overall record in the Western Division of the Midwest League. Wisconsin will have home field advantage through the first two rounds of the postseason.

Wisconsin (77-61 overall, 33-36 second half) got another fast start with a first inning run. Ben McMahan doubled with one out. A two-out single to center by Cameron Garfield drove in McMahan for a 1-0 lead.

Burlington (67-71, 35-34) answered in the bottom of the second inning. Max Muncy started the inning with a double and was moved to third on a grounder to the right side of the infield. A sacrifice fly by John Wooten tied the game 1-1. The Bees loaded the bases with two outs on a pair of walks and a single but did not score again in the frame.

McMahan put the Rattlers back in front in the top of the third inning. He clobbered a two-run home run deep to left for a 3-1 lead. One out later, Cameron Garfield lined a 1-0 pitch down the left field line. The ball cleared the fence and was ruled fair for a solo homer and a 4-1 advantage.

Rattlers starting pitcher Chad Thompson allowed a pair of one-out singles in the third inning. Then, retired the next eight batters he faced to carry the 4-1 lead to the sixth inning.

He would walk the leadoff batter in the sixth and an error brought the tying run to the plate. Thompson would get the first out of the inning before turning the game over to Brent Suter.

Suter got the second out of the inning with a strikeout, but walked the next hitter to load the bases. Suter escaped the jam with a grounder to second and the Rattlers maintained their 4-1 lead.

Nick Ramirez provided some insurance in the top of the seventh inning. Macias and McMahan started the inning with singles. Ramirez followed with a double to the right field corner to drive in both runners for a 6-1 lead.

Suter closed out the Bees with a scoreless seventh inning.

Earlier in the day, Peoria beat Kane County 6-2. That allowed Burlington to get into the Midwest League playoffs as the second half Western Division Wild Card. Wisconsin will face the Bees in round one of the Midwest League playoffs. Game one of the best of three series will be in Burlington on Wednesday night.

Final: Wisconsin 8 Burlington 3 (Game Two)

Rattlers sweep twinbill from Burlington

Wisconsin and Burlington will meet in First Round of MWL Playoffs starting Wednesday

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

BURLINGTON, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers closed out their regular season with a doubleheader sweep of the Burlington Bees at Community Field on Monday afternoon. Chadwin Stang hit a pair of homers and Mike Garza chipped in with a homer in the nightcap for an 8-3 win. The two wins in the twinbill gave Wisconsin a three-game series sweep of the team they will face in the first round of the Midwest League Playoffs.

Stang blasted his first solo shot in the first inning. His one out home run was his ninth of the season and the third of the afternoon - the Rattlers hit two homers in the first game of the doubleheader - for Wisconsin hitters.

Burlington (67-72 overall, 35-35 second half) scored twice in the bottom of the first inning. Addison Russell doubled to knock in the first run. A sacrifice fly from Wade Kirkland made it 2-1.

The Bees almost blew the game open in the bottom of the third inning. They had the bases loaded and one out with Douglas Landaeta at the plate. Landaeta sent a line drive to the gap in right-center field that appeared headed for a bases clearing extra base hit. But, Max Walla made a spectacular diving catch to rob Landaeta of a hit. A run scored from third on the sacrifice fly to put Burlington up by two runs, but it could have been worse.

The Rattlers offense took advantage of some sloppy Burlington defense to take the lead in the fourth inning. Stang walked and Walla singled to put runners at the corners with no outs. Cameron Garfield's grounder to third was booted for an error to let Stang score. A one-out double by Yadiel Rivera drove in Walla to tie the game 3-3. Lance Roenicke put the Rattlers in front when his broken bat grounder to third base drove in Garfield and put Rivera to third base. A wild pitch later in the inning let Rivera score for a four run inning and a 5-3 lead.

Wisconsin (78-61, 34-36) added another run in the fifth inning when Carlos George scored from third base on an errant pickoff throw to first.

Michael White came out of the bullpen for the Rattlers and kept the Bees in check. Then, the Rattlers put the finishing touches on the Bees in the top of the seventh inning. Mike Garza hit a leadoff homer - the fourth long ball of the day for the Rattlers - in the top of the seventh for his first Midwest League home run.

Stang went deep again, his tenth home run of the season, with two outs in the seventh for an 8-3 lead. The Rattlers finished the year with five players reaching double digits in home runs. Nick Ramirez (16), Ben McMahan (15), Cameron Garfield (11), and Stang.

White worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh for his first save.

Wisconsin's offense hit 107 home runs during the 2012 season. That broke the previous high of 101 set by the 2005 Timber Rattlers.

The teams will be off on Tuesday before meeting in Game One of their best-of-three first round Midwest League playoff matchup on Wednesday at Community Field. Game time is 6:30pm.

The Rattlers will have Jacob Barnes (4-7, 3.84) as their Game One starting pitcher. Burlington has tentatively announced AJ Cole (6-3, 2.07) as their Game One starter. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10.

Game Two of the series will be at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Thursday night at 6:35pm. Chad Pierce (7-5, 3.47) is the scheduled starter for the Rattlers when the series returns to Grand Chute. Tickets for Game Two are available at the Timber Rattlers Box Office, by calling (800) WI-TIMBER or (920) 733-4152, or through timberrattlers.com.

Billings (Reds) 5 Helena 2

Box Score

Taylor Wall, who has reportedly been touching the mid-90's, got his final start of the season. It didn't go the greatest (2 IP 2 H 2 R 2 ER 2 BB 2 K), but there are some nice sharp tools to work with in the Taylor Wall toolbox. Remember, he is basically a converted college SS. Keep an eye on him. Mike Francisco pitched the next 2 innings and was great leaving zero's behind along with a of K. Martin Viramontes had his best appearance of recent memory. Unfortunately, that includes giving up the go ahead run in the 9th inning. I'm pretty sure Viramontes leads the entire minor league system in K/9 still. Jono Armold had to come in for Viramontes. Armold promptly allowed two more Viramontes runners across and that was it.

Jose Pena and Adam Giacalone both hit triples and Raul Mondesi Jr. ripped a double.

Chris McFarland was pulled after a 1st AB popout. Ra Ra Jenkins moved over to 2B in his absence.

3 more games for Helena.

Huntsville Stars' season mediocre, but individual achievements stand out

By Mark McCarter, The Huntsville Times

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- For a season that would seem so mediocre on the surface, 2012 will go into the books as one of the most memorable in Huntsville Stars' history.

The Stars, who closed out the year with a rain-out at Montgomery on Monday night, finished at 65-74, the eighth-best record in the 10-team Southern League.

The Stars haven't reached the playoffs since 2009 and haven't finished about .500 since 2008. In the 14 years of Huntsville's affiliation with Milwaukee, the Stars have finished above .500 only five times.

However, there were individual performances that left indelible imprints.

-- First baseman Hunter Morris was named the Southern League Most Valuable Player and led the league in homers, RBIs, hits and total bases.

-- Second baseman Scooter Gennett was named to the Southern League All-Star team and was runner-up to Morris in most hits.

-- Josh Stinson had 11 wins and a 3.16 ERA, quietly becoming one of the league's most effective pitchers.

-- Pitcher Hiram Burgos had 13 starts here on a season that saw him promoted from Class A Brevard County, then ultimately to Class AAA Nashville on a fast track to the majors. He was 6-1 with a 1.94 ERA for Huntsville and was 10-4 with a 2.02 ERA for the whole season.

Four previous Huntsville players were named Southern League MVP before Morris, who is the first Huntsville-born player to grow up and play for the Stars.

Jose Canseco was MVP in the Stars' inaugural season of 1985, despite playing only 58 games (during which he hit 25 homers, drove in 80 runs and batted .318). Catcher Terry Steinbach followed as the MVP in 1986.

Outfielder Ben Grieve, part of Huntsville's most explosive offense ever, was named 1997 MVP and third baseman Corey Hart was 2003 MVP. All four reached the majors, with Canseco, Steinbach and Hart having extended careers.

Morris had 28 homers, tied the team record with 40 doubles, 158 hits, 113 RBIs, a .303 average, 294 total bases and a .563 slugging percentage.

It's arguably the third-best offensive season ever for a Huntsville player, behind Canseco and Mike Coolbaugh's 1997 season (30 homers, 132 RBIs, 303 total bases, 172 hits) on a team that still ranks as the most productive offense in Huntsville history.

Morris is second to Coolbaugh in total bases, third behind Coolbaugh and Rob Nelson for most homers in a season and fourth behind Steinbach, Coolbaugh and D.T. Cromer for most RBIs in a season.

Billings beats Brewers 5-2

Helena Brewers

In the Brewers last home game on August 27, the Brew Crew sent the home faithful home with a walkoff victory.

For a moment on Monday night, it looked as though Helena might find the same fortune against the Billings Mustangs, before Jesus Adames struck out Raul Mondesi Jr. to earn the 5-2 victory.

The game got started off with a bang as four runs were scored in the first two frames. However, that would be all the scoring out of either squad for six consecutive frames.

In the top of the ninth, the Mustangs found a groove at the dish and plated three runners. Shortstop Zach Vincej started the rally with one out on a single into left field, but Jon Matthews had the big hit when he smashed a double over the head of outfielder Ruben Ozuna.

Despite trailing by three entering the bottom of the ninth, the Brewers refused to go quietly into the dark Labor Day night. With two outs, infielder Renaldo Jenkins gave the Brewers life with a double to right-centerfield. Ozuna then reached on a fielding error by second baseman Robert Ramirez. This brought up Mondesi with the opportunity to tie the game. Unfortunately for the Brewers, Adames got the punchout and recorded his first save of the season.

The series finale against Billings is Tuesday night. First pitch is slated for 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).
