Manatees fall 4-2 to Daytona

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees fell behind early and couldn't come back as they were doubled up by the Daytona Cubs, 4-2 on Saturday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach.

Brandon Williamson (4-10, 5.65) got the start on the mound for the Manatees and allowed a homer to the first batter that he faced as John Andreoli took him deep to lead off the top of the first. Two batters later, Christian Villanueva singled to left and he would score later in the inning with two outs on an RBI single from Nelson Perez.

The 'Tees (34-32 second half, 63-71 overall) would get one run back in the top of the fourth as Shea Vucinich drove in Jason Rogers with a two-out RBI single. Daytona (28-36, 58-74) though would extend its lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the inning thanks to an RBI single by Rafael Lopez that drove in Perez. Perez led off the inning with a double off of Williamson.

The Cubs would score one more run off of Williamson in the fifth with two outs as Villanueva reached on an error by third baseman Mike Walker, that allowed Andreoli to score.

Williamson threw six innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits, while walking two and striking out two. Eric Arnett held the Cubs scoreless the rest of the way as he threw two shutout innings and fanned two hitters.

Brevard's best chance to get back into the game was in the top of the seventh as Parker Berberet started the rally with a one-out double to right. Berberet advanced to third on as John Dishon reached on a bunt single and then Franklin Romero Jr. singled to center to plate Berberet and cut Daytona's lead to two.

With Nick Shaw at the plate, the 'Tees were successful in executing a double steal as Romero Jr. went to second and Dishon to third. Shaw would eventually draw a walk to load the bases with one out. The rally though would end with Reggie Keen at the plate as he grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to end the threat and the inning.

The Brevard County Manatees will close out the 2012 season on Sunday evening at 5:35 PM (4:35 Central) against the Cubs. Nick Bucci (2-2, 1.90) will get the start and Drew Gagnon (1-2, 2.82) is scheduled to follow him out of the bullpen in the season finale.

So, this game stunk. It just eats at me that the Cubs are going to be the ones pounding in some of the final nails. Gotta turn it around now boys.

Just in time for the finale Sunday ;).

The Manatees have been eliminated in the postseason chase. Daily followers can look back at so many painful close losses in the 2nd half. This division was there to be had -- this was probably the most frustrating of the clubs to follow in 2012...

Road game summary from the Independent Record --

Three different Great Falls Voyagers recorded three hits apiece, and catcher Angel Rosario finished with five RBIs in their 11-3 win over the Helena Brewers on Saturday night at Centene Stadium.

Rosario had two doubles in his 3-for-5 performance. The Voyagers’ electric offense — Great Falls finished with 13 hits — helped reliever Andrew Virgili earn his third win of the season.

Helena had nine hits and was 4 for 9 with runners in scoring position, but stranded eight men on base. Two errors also proved costly for the Brewers, who have defeated the Voyagers just twice in 2012.

Jose Pena was 2 for 4 and Paul Eshleman 2 for 3 for the Brewers. Helena starter Tyler Wagner was tagged with the loss, after giving up seven runs — six earned — on 10 hits through 4 2/3 innings.

The Voyagers broke the game open in the sixth, pushing four runs across. Despite the dominating final score, Great Falls finished 6 for 18 with runners in scoring position.

Huntsville watched as Montgomery celebrated with champagne after knocking them off. It's been a pretty dry association with the Stars in recent years -- as much as the Brewers organization may have disdain for Joe Davis Stadium, Stars' followers haven't exactly been rewarded with playoff glory via their Milwaukee connection (nor has Nashville, Brevard County or Helena -- and us! -- for that matter.)

Chris Mehring will be providing further details, but it appears that Burlington, the Rattlers' opponent this weekend, still has a magic number of one to clinch a wild card spot of one over Kane County.

If that is still pending after Game One on Labor Day, Saturday's game will need to be played.

Also, the Rattlers have only a percentage point lead now over Beloit in the race for overall season record, which determines home field advantage in the second round of the playoffs. The way are Rattlers are limping home, that may not be an issue regardless, but we'll see.
