Kyle Heckathorn was the best pitcher on the evening, he wasn't charged with a run in his 1.1 IP. Josh Stinson got worked over in the 2nd inning for 4 runs including a 3 run HR. Josh Butler couldn't last 1 inning and make it through the 5th, he was charged with 6 runs, 3 earned. Tim Dillard continued his season long slide giving up a run over the final 2 innings... PCL hitters hit .418 against Tim but SL hitters are only tuning him up for a .308 average prior to today's action, nothing has worked for the side arm slinger this year.

 

Hunter Morris (3-4,2B,HR) continues to crush the ball though he had a costly fielding error (6), Brock Kjeldgaard (2-3,BB,2B,HR) added some fireworks of his own, and Kentrail Davis (2-3) tallied the final multi-hit game of the contest.

Sounds Drop Second Straight Game To Redbirds

 

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds defeated the Sounds for the second straight evening, recording a 5-4, 10-inning victory over Nashville in front of 7,888 fans on Saturday evening at Greer Stadium.

 

The loss was Nashville's second in a row following the club's season-best five-game winning streak.

 

In the top of the tenth, Steven Hill got things started when he drew a one-out walk from Sounds reliever Juan Perez (4-2). Brock Peterson followed with a potential double-play grounder to shortstop but Edwin Maysonet airmailed Taylor Green at second base to allow runners on the corners with just one out.

 

After Eugenio Velez drew a walk to load the bases, Lou Montanez lifted a 3-1 Perez offering to left-center for a go-ahead sacrifice fly that plated Hill in unearned fashion.

 

Victor Marte closed out the game by retiring the Sounds in order in the bottom of the tenth to earn his third save of the season.

 

The contest was Nashville's league-leading 17th extra-inning game of the season (6-11).

 

Nashville outfielders Khris Davis and Caleb Gindl each departed the contest early after suffering unspecified injuries. Davis was removed after grounding into a double play to conclude the third inning while Gindl was replaced on the basepaths following a single in the bottom of the sixth.

 

The Sounds got off to a quick start against Memphis right-hander Brandon Dickson, recording four straight hits to open the first inning en route to a 3-0 lead.

 

Logan Schafer led off the Nashville first with a single to center and moved to second on a Corey Patterson bunt single before both runners scored on Davis' two-run double down the right field line to give the Sounds a 2-0 advantage. Davis later scored the frame's third run on a Humberto Quintero double-play grounder.

 

Memphis cut the Sounds' lead to 3-1 in the second when Velez singled with one out against Sounds starter Brian Baker, stole second, and raced home on Jose Garcia's two-out double off the base of the left field wall.

 

The Redbirds pulled in front in the third with a three-run outburst against Baker. Peterson evened the score at 3-3 with a two-out, two-run triple to right then scored the go-ahead run on a Montanez single to center.

 

Baker took a no-decision after he allowed four runs on seven hits over five innings. He recorded his first professional hit in his final at-bat of the season, a single in the bottom of the fifth inning.

 

Shortstop Edwin Maysonet knotted the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out solo homer to left off Dickson, his third roundtripper of the year.

 

Sounds infielder Taylor Green extended his longest hitting streak of the year to nine games with a first-inning single.

 

The teams continue the homestand with another 6:35 p.m. meeting on Sunday evening. Right-hander Tyler Thornburg (2-2, 2.65) will man the bump for the Sounds and face Memphis right-hander Nick Greenwood (3-3, 4.58).

That's a tough loss... starting the game with a 3 run first and not being able to make it hold up. Gifting away runs in extras is never a recipe for success, but of greater concern are the injuries to Davis and Gindl, both had a shot at being Sept call-ups. Khris already missed a ton of time with his leg injury (hamstring? I forget), hopefully this is a minor injury to a different part of the body.

 

Unfortunately I didn't listen to the game so I don't have any further insight into either injury than what's in the game story.

Andreoli blast paces Cubs in 4-2 win

Daytona Beach, FL The Daytona Cubs topped the Brevard County Manatees 4-2 on Saturday evening at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

 

After going 488 plate appearances this season without a homerun, Cubs CF John Andreoli crushed the first pitch of the ballgame from RHP Brandon Williamson over the scoreboard beyond the left field fence to give Daytona a 1-0 lead.

 

Also in the first, 3B Christian Villanueva blooped a one-out single to left-center, stole second and came around to score on a DH Nelson Perez two-out double off the right field wall to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead.

 

Matt Loosen (W, 11-5), who earned his team-leading 11th win of the season, worked five very strong innings, and allowed just a run on two hits with six strikeouts.

 

Daytona scored individual runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 4-1 lead on the Manatees.

 

In the seventh, Manatees RF Franklin Romero JR. laced a two-out RBI single off LHP Jeff Lorick to cut the Cubs lead to 4-2, but that was the conclusion of the scoring on the evening.

 

RHP A.J. Morris came on in relief of Lorick to start the eighth inning, and shut the door on the 'Tees. Morris' two perfect innings of work earned him his seventh save of the season, all of which have come in his last 11 appearances.

 

In the game, Andreoli stole two more bases to add to his leage-leading total (55), and Villanueva stole two as well. The first of Andreoli's two marked the 200th base the Daytona Cubs stole in 2012. They ended the game with 201.

 

Perez finished with two double, a run, a walk and the RBI.

 

With the win, the Cubs have won back-to-back scheduled games for the first time since 8/7 and 8/9 when they defeated Lakeland.

 

The two teams will play the season-finale on Sunday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. First pitch on Fan Appreciation Night is scheduled for 5:35p.m., which fireworks to follow the final out.

Saturday marked "Front Row Joe's" 1,200 consecutive Daytona Cubs game attended at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, dating back to 1995. Joe was honored when Cubs Manager Brian Harper asked him to dress in uniform for the game, and sit in the Cubs dugout at the Assistant Pitching Coach for the game.

So, this game stunk. It just eats at me that the Cubs are going to be the ones pounding in some of the final nails. Gotta turn it around now boys.

 

Brandon Williamson started and did some inexplicable things, such as serving up a homer to John Andreoli. That was his first in almost 500 AB's this season. Eric Arnett was much better this time out as he no-hit the Cubs over the final 2 innings with 2 K.

 

At the plate, no one had multiple hits but Nick Shaw, Mike Walker and John Dishon all were on twice with a H and a BB. Shaw's hit was a double and Dishon stole his 17th BC base.

The hitters were again led by surging Jose Pena (2-4). Still 0 BB's for Jose in over 60 AB's. Paul Eshelman had another 2 H and chipped in a BB.

 

This might seem skimpy, but there wasn't much to talk about. Chris McFarland needs work on D. Ruben Ozuna had the only XBH, a 2B.

Why He's Here: 1-0, 0.00, 10 2/3 IP, 7 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 13 SO

The Scoop: Few farm systems this year have improved as much as the Pirates, and that's even without having signed first-rounder Mark Appel. Much of that is due to the emergence of young Dominican talent, such as outfielder Gregory Polanco and shortstop Alen Hanson at low Class A, but Locke has steadily raised his status with his mastery of Triple-A hitters. Opponents don't have to get their bats started early against Locke's fastball the way they do against Gerrit Cole or Jameson Taillon, but the lefty's ability to locate his fastball to the edges of the plate and keep hitters off balance by mixing a solid array of offspeed pitches has made him effective. He could step into Pittsburgh's starting rotation next season with a chance to be a solid starter in the middle or back of a rotation.

The Scoop: While many players tend to fade down the stretch during a long, hot summer, Ha has steadily improved. He hit .300/.398/.429 in July and has been on fire so far in August, batting .316/.422/.500 for the month. A catcher as an amateur, Ha has turned himself into a fine defensive outfielder and did his damage this week while spending time at all three outfield positions.

Why He's Here: .682/.708/.864 (15-for-22), 3 R, 4 2B, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 SO

The Scoop: The peskiest leadoff hitter in the minors was promoted to Double-A Springfield two weeks ago. The Cardinals watched with interest to see if O'Neill would be able to work counts, hit line drives and draw walks against more advanced pitchers. So far, so good. O'Neill has walked seven times in 12 games while striking out twice. He's also stolen three bases in three tries. For the season, O'Neill now has 77 walks and 26 strikeouts, a nearly 3-to-1 ratio that is the best in the minors over the past five seasons

After his prospect stock appeared to be tanking a year ago, Brewers 1B Hunter Morris has rebounded with a big year in Double-A Huntsville. With another big week, Morris, 23, is now hitting .295/.350/.548 in 133 games with 26 home runs, the most in the Southern League . . .

Brewers RF Caleb Gindl hit .307/.390/.492 in 126 games last year as a 22-year-old in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League, but he hasn't hit as well (.262/.318/.425 in 125 games) upon his return to the league. He pulled off a rare feat this week by collecting more extra-base hits (seven, including a homer and a triple) than RBIs (six) while going 10-for-22 with a walk and four strikeouts. Already a member of the Brewers' 40-man roster, Gindl's hot second half (.294/.351/.494 with six homers in 170 at-bats) ought to earn him a September callup to Milwaukee . . .

Reds RF Yorman Rodriguez's past two years have been filled with more low lights than highlights. He showed little effort in the outfield and struggled at the plate last year before an injury ended his season, and then he did much of the same in high Class A Bakersfield early this year. But a demotion back to low Class A Dayton seems to have helped him straighten out. The 19-year-old hit .321/.345/.679 this week with a pair of home runs and a triple. On the triple, rehabbing Joey Votto may have run a little further on his repaired knee than he had planned, as Rodriguez drove him from first . . .

After going homerless in the first half of the season, Brewers RF Kentrail Davis has enjoyed a solid second half at Double-A Huntsville. The 24-year-old hit his seventh homer of the second half last Friday against Birmingham and went on to post a .429/.500/.857 (9-for-21) week, adding in four doubles and a triple . . .

Itto (Aguadilla PR): Do you think that Jorge Soler could start the 2013 in AA Tennessee with a Sept call up to the majors?

 

 

Ben Badler: A Florida State League assignment is more likely. The Cubs know they're probably not going to contend next year, so there's really no reason to rush him to Chicago.

Liam (Dallas): Who has had the more impressive season? Luis Heredia or Victor Sanchez? Would Sanchez crack your top 100?

 

 

Ben Badler: They both have a chance to sneak in somewhere toward the end of the list, with Heredia over Sanchez.

daniel (houston): best pure hitter in the minors?

 

 

Ben Badler: Oscar Taveras. Maybe "pure" is the right word for what he does in the box, but it works, and it works better than anyone else.

Bobby (Pittsburgh): Is Gregory Polanco a top 50 prospect? What's his ceiling?

 

 

Ben Badler: Very good chance to be there. Potential all-star with five average or better tools.

David (LA): Higher upside Wong K or Didi?

 

 

Ben Badler: Wong. Gregorius is going to give you more defensive value and he'll hit enough to be an everyday guy in the big leagues, but Wong's offensive upside is bigger.

Michael Stern (Rochester NY): With Rizzo the future at 1B in Chicago, what do the Cubbies do with Vogelbach? Can he play anywhere else? That's a big power bat to have to give up.

 

 

Ben Badler: He's in Boise, so they don't have to worry about that for at least a few years. Vogelbach is getting great reviews this year, but that's not a body you want anywhere other than first base or the batter's box.

Chris Nelson (Boston MA): What is your take on Red Sox AAA pitcher Will Inman? Seems to have put up great numbers this year out of the pen. He's a guy that has not had a shot in the bigs yet. Is this year the year?

Along with Eric Farris' call-up, the injuries to Caleb Gindl (awful timing for him) and AFL-bound Khris Davis (hope it's not a re-occurance of the calf injury), the Sounds' bench was down to just backup catcher Dayton Buller. Maybe it's an unwritten Brewers' coaching policy that you can't expose a squad to potentially needing to use an emergency catcher, but Mike Guerrero went with Mike McClendon over Buller in the 10th.

 

The Nashville bench is down to zero, then, for the final two games of the season. That's awkward as there's no designated hitter vs. the Cards' squad, so there are no pinch-hitters available.
