Rebel's bat yells at 'Tees in walk-off Is that a weekly headline or has Robbie been saving that all season?

Daytona Beach, FL - The Daytona Cubs crushed the Brevard County Manatees' playoff hopes in a 4-3 walk-off win at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Friday.

 

In the bottom of the ninth with 3B Christian Villanueva on first and two outs, 1B Rebel Ridling drove an offering from RHP Greg Holle (L, 3-7) into the left-center field gap, which plated Villanueva and won the game for the Cubs.

 

Trailing 3-2 in the seventh, Ridling smacked a game-tying line drive homerun over the left field fence for Daytona. Ridling finished 4-5 with the homerun and game-winning double.

 

LHP Matt Iannazzo, who was making only his third appearance for Daytona, tossed three scoreless innings of relief for Daytona, and allowed only one hit with a walk and two strikeouts to keep the Cubs in the ballgame.

 

RHP Scott Weismann (W, 3-5) followed Iannazzo with two shutout innings of his own to finish the game and earn the win.

 

LHP Kyler Burke started the game for Daytona and allowed three runs, all earned, on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts over four innings of work.

 

Cubs RF Vlad Frias finished 3-4 with an RBI, his first for Daytona. Friday was Frias' first three-hit game for the Cubs.

 

Villanueva and DH Nelson Perez both stole bases for the Cubs, who are now three stolen bases shy of 200 on the season with two remaining games.

 

The one-run game marked the ninth time in 18 games this season that the two teams have played contests decided by one run. Daytona and Brevard County are 9-9 against each other this season.

 

The two teams will square off on Saturday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. RHP Matt Loosen (10-5, 4.18) is scheduled to start for the Cubs, and his mound-foe will be RHP Brandon Williamson (4-9, 5.73). First pitch on Fireworks Saturday is scheduled for 7:05p.m.

With the game tied at 3 in the bottom of the 9th inning, Greg Holle allowed the winning run to cross the plate. The loss is not ideal for the playoff hopeful Manatees. Taylor Jungmann started and he was pretty darn good again. He recorded 15 outs, gave up just 5 H 1 R 0 ER 4 BB while notching 6 K and a 7:1 GO:FO. Tommy Toledo joined Holle as relievers that gave up too many runs.

 

The hitters fell short in the end, but they stayed in the game the whole way. Nick Shaw had 3 more hits and sports a .417/.500/.556 line over his last 10. Mike Walker had a 2B and a BB.

What a great pitching performance against Great Falls. The four Brewers pitchers, Damien Magnifico, Ryan Fasano, Taylor Mangum and Connor Whalen, combined to throw 9 innings giving up 4 H 1 R 1 ER and 6 BB while notching 7 K and 13:3 GO:FO. Great job fellas!

 

At the plate, Raul Mondesi Jr. had a H and BB while Jose Pena and Paul Eshelman (HR) each smacked 2 hits. It is pretty impressive that Pena is already hitting 3rd for Helena. Must have impressed the coaches.

Snappers sweep Wisconsin

 

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers had an early 4-0 lead, but the Beloit Snappers would score ten unanswered runs and beat the Rattlers 10-4 Friday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The bottom third of the Beloit order did in the Rattlers as the Snappers earned a three-game sweep of the Rattlers.

 

Ben McMahan started the scoring for Wisconsin (75-61 overall, 31-36 second half). He blasted a solo homer with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. Nick Ramirez would hit a leadoff homer in the bottom of the second inning and Wisconsin was up 2-0.

 

Those two round trippers gave the 2012 Timber Rattlers 102 home runs for the season and set a record. The previous record of 101 homers by a Rattlers team had been set by the 2005 team.

 

Wisconsin added two more runs in the third inning. There were runners at first and second with one out and a grounder to short looked like a double play. But, the flip to second was wild. Lance Roenicke scored all the way from second base as the ball was tracked down. Yadiel Rivera drove in the second run of the inning with a single and the Rattlers were up 4-0.

 

Beloit (74-63, 36-31) rallied for three runs in the top of the fourth. A single and an error let Eddie Rosario to reach third to start the frame. A sacrifice fly by Kennys Vargas got Beloit their first run. Then, back-to-back singles by Drew Leachman and Wang-Wei Lin put two runners on base for the Snappers. AJ Pettersen, the #7 hitter in the Beloit lineup, followed with another single and Leachman scored on the play. There was a slight bobble in the outfield on the play and Lin tried to score from first. He was out at the plate.

 

Jairo Rodriguez, who hit eighth in Beloit's batting order, would pick up the fourth straight hit with an RBI double to score Pettersen and cut the Rattlers lead to a single run.

 

The Rattlers maintained that lead until the eighth inning.

 

A walk, a bunt single, and a sacrifice bunt started the Beloit eighth inning. Wisconsin intentionally walked Pettersen to set up a potential double play. But, Rodriguez knocked in the tying run with a sacrifice fly.

 

Tyler Grimes was next and he lined a 2-1 pitch down the left field line. The ball stayed fair as it cleared the wall for a three-run homer and a 7-4 Beloit lead. Grimes, the number nine hitter in the Beloit lineup, also hit a home run in Beloit's win on Thursday.

 

Beloit tacked on three more runs in the top of the ninth inning and it was the bottom third of the order that did the damage again. Pettersen knocked in a run with a ground out; Rosario had an RBI double; and Grimes singled in the final run.

 

The 7-8-9 hitters in the Beloit order went 6-for-12 with nine RBI on Friday night.

 

Wisconsin's lead for the best overall record in the Western Divison fell to 0.5 games over the Snappers. There are three games left in the season.

 

The Timber Rattlers hit the road for the final three games of the regular season and they will take on a possible first round playoff opponent on Saturday night. Wisconsin takes on the Burlington Bees at Community Field. Chad Pierce (7-5, 3.47) is the scheduled starter for the Rattlers. The Bees have Drew Granier (11-9, 3.10) as their scheduled starting pitcher. Game time is 6:30pm.

The Rattlers late season slide continues as they've lost 7 of their last 8 now. Not the way you want to go in to the playoffs. Mark Williams gave up three runs over five innings and Stosh Wawrzasek pitched two scoreless, but things got ugly from there. Santo Manzanillo got shelled. He gave up three hits and three walks to allow four runs to score in the eighth inning. Michael White then gave up three more in the ninth on three hits and a walk. White's runs were unearned following an error by Carlos George.

 

Nick Ramirez hit his 16th home run of the season and doubled as part of a 2-5 night. Ben McMahan also homered, his 14th of the year. George and Chadwin Stang both had 2-4 nights at the bottom of the order. The defense did manage to get a few outs with their arms as Stang had a pair of outfield assists, and Rafael Neda gunned down two or four runners attempting to steal.

Another disappointing outing tonight for Ariel Pena -- his fifth such start of seven since joining the Brewers. One knock I recall reading about Pena at the time of the trade was that he has a tendency to leave the ball up -- he recorded six flyball outs tonight to zero groundball outs... and of the six hits he allowed, he gave up a 2B, two 3Bs, and a HR. Beyond just leaving the ball up, when he's off, it seems like he has very little idea of where the ball is headed once it leaves his hand. In addition to three BBs, he had two HBPs tonight. Hopefully Lee Tunnell can help Ariel reign in his command, because he certainly has a live enough arm to hack it at the MLB level, and I'm really getting the impression that his struggles are very much mechanics-related.

 

With all that said, Pena was able to limit the damage against him to single runs in the 2nd-4th innings (a testament to his raw stuff & ability), and the score was tied 3-3 when he was lifted. The Stars scored all three of their runs in the 3rd, with a two-RBI 2B from Brock Kjeldgaard and a RBI 1B from Hunter Morris.

 

That was the extent to which Huntsville was able to get to Biscuits starter Kyle Lobstein, a 2008 2nd round pick out of high school by TBR. He actually worked 6.2 IP without allowing any ER, as all three runs in the 3rd came after an error.

 

Johnny Hellweg, much like his former Angels organization-mate, struggled mightily with command. In addition to the hits he allowed, he managed both a BB and a WP in each of his two innings of work. The Biscuits scored two runs off of him in the 6th, but he was able to keep them scoreless in the 7th.

 

Brian Garman didn't fare any better, allowing a 3B to lead off the 8th, followed by a SF and a 1B before he retired the side. Heading into the 9th, Huntsville trailed 6-3.

 

Anderson De La Rosa got the Stars dugout thinking rally, as he led off the 9th with a HR. Lee Haydel followed with a 1B, but the only other contribution the would-be rally got was a one-out BB from Scooter Gennett. Gennett was back in the starting lineup tonight, but as a DH, so there must've been something injury-related (however minor) to his removal from last night's game.

Sounds Fall To Redbirds In Opener, 5-1

Peralta Takes Hard-Luck Loss In Quality Start

 

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Shelby Miller struck out nine over six strong innings as the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds handed the Nashville Sounds a 5-1 defeat in the opener of a season-ending four-game series.

 

The 21-year-old Miller (11-10) scattered five hits and walked none for his eighth quality start and eleventh victory.

 

The loss to the Redbirds snapped a season-best five-game winning streak and six-game win streak at home. The top three hitters in the Memphis lineup went a combined 9-for-13 with four runs scored.

 

Outfielder Logan Schafer and Khris Davis each had multi-hit games for the second straight game. Taylor Green doubled to extend his hitting streak to a season-best eight games.

 

The Sounds scored their lone run in the bottom of the first inning. Schafer hit an infield single and came all the way around to score on a Green RBI double down the right field line.

Memphis took the lead at 2-1 in the visiting half of the sixth and didn't look back. After Adron Chambers and Steven Hill singled, Brock Peterson hammed a two-run double down the left field line.

 

Three consecutive one-out singles combined with a pair of errors extended Memphis' lead to 4-1 after reliever Mike McClendon entered the contest in the next frame. With runners on first and second, Ryan Jackson singled to center, which was bobbled by Schafer to allow both runners to advance. After Schafer's throw to third to gun down the lead runner, third baseman Taylor Green airmailed a throw to second.

 

The Redbirds tacked on an insurance run in ninth with three singles, highlighted by a RBI base hit by Hill.

 

For his team-leading 10th quality start and hard-luck loss, Sounds starting pitcher Wily Peralta (7-11) gave up a couple of runs on five hits and three walks in six innings. The 23-year-old fanned two and induced a pair of inning-ending double plays with 100 pitches (64 strikes).

 

McClendon was charged with two runs (one earned) on three hits in an inning. Mitch Stetter struck out one in 2/3 of an inning. Amaury Rivas closed the game with a run earned in 1 1/3 innings.

 

Nashville and Memphis continue the Tennessee Lottery I-40 Cup Series at 6:35 pm CT on Saturday night at Greer Stadium. Sounds right-hander Brian Baker (4-4, 4.23) takes the mound against Redbirds righty Brandon Dickson (5-11, 3.55).

As I mentioned earlier Wily Peralta wasn't at his best but limited the Redbirds to just the 2 runs in his final inning. If Tonight was Roger's last MLB start as Mark A. apparently alluded to during the broadcast fortunately Peralta is lined up perfectly to step right in and finish the season with the big club as this was his last AAA start. It wouldn't hurt Wily at all to bump up to 160-170 innings this season so look forward to seeing him in Milwaukee next week.

 

Whatever Amuary Rivas once had it seems like it's all gone now. I was so high on him after his back to back A+ and AA campaigns but he's basically fallen off a cliff. Scouts never liked him very much and we could never really find out why, but the results are pretty telling.

 

Look for Shelby Miller in STL's rotation next year, he appears to be straightened out as he dominated the Sounds tonight and check out his last 10 games... damn. In case you didn't click or missed it that was 70 strike outs in just over 51 innings... Part of me wanted him to go all Manny Parra and give the Cards nothing for the rotation, though I was conflicted because I really don't feel right rooting for anyone's prospects to fail, but it doesn't look like I'll have to worry about that anymore.

Brevard's winning streak snapped on walk-off

Manatees playoff hopes all but over in 4-3 loss to Cubs

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees had their five-game winning streak snapped and their playoff hopes were all but ended as they fell 4-3 on a walk-off hit against the Daytona Cubs on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

 

With the game tied 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth, the 'Tees (34-31 second half, 63-70 overall) were one out away from sending the game into extra innings. Christian Villanueva extended the game for the Cubs (27-36, 57-74) as he singled off of Greg Holle, who was in his second inning of work. The game would end just one batter later as Rebel Ridling doubled to center to plate the winning run in Villanueva.

 

Brevard County had a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh, but it was Ridling who tied the game for Daytona with a one-out homer to left off of reliever Tommy Toledo.

 

Taylor Jungmann (11-6, 3.53) started on the hill for the 'Tees and went five innings and allowed just one unearned run. He yielded five hits and four walks, while striking out six.

 

Daytona's lone run off of Jungmann came in the second inning on a single from Vladimir Frias that scored Nelson Perez, who led the inning off by reaching base on an error by Brevard first baseman Jason Rogers.

 

The Manatees tied the game in the top of the third and it started with a two-out single by Rogers. Mike Walker would then drive in Rogers with his 24th double of the season. Walker is hitting .305 (11-for-36) with ten RBI in his last ten games.

 

Brevard County strung together a two-out rally in the fourth to take the lead. It started with Juan Sanchez being hit by a pitch and then stealing second with Franklin Romero Jr. at the plate. Romero Jr. would drive Sanchez in on a single to right to give the Manatees a 2-1 lead.

 

Reggie Keen then singled to put two on with two outs and Nick Shaw would then drive Romero Jr. home on a single to left field to make it a 3-1 game in favor of the 'Tees. Shaw has been Brevard's hottest hitter as he was 3-for-5 on the night and is hitting .529 (9-for-17) with six RBI over his last five games.

 

Keen and Shaw would each advance a base on a balk, but Brevard was unable to capitalize as Rogers flew out to end the inning.

 

With Jungmann out of the game, Toledo came in and he allowed a double to the first batter that he faced as Rafael Lopez led off the sixth with a two-bagger. Two batters later, Frias singled to put runners on the corners. Lopez would then score on a balk from Toledo to cut the Cubs deficit to one run.

 

Brevard County and Daytona will continue their four-game set on Saturday night at 7:05 PM (6:05 Central). Brandon Williamson (4-9, 5.73) will get the ball for the 'Tees. Williamson is 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA in his last four starts.

Brewers top Voyagers as Fasano earns first win

 

Paul Eshleman’s two-run homer in the first inning started things off right for the Helena Brewers. Connor Whalen’s four strikeouts finished off the Great Falls Voyagers.

 

Helena won 5-1 Friday night at Centene Stadium, the Brewers second win over Great Falls this season. Helena got multi-hit games from Eshleman and Jose Pena, and reliever Ryan Fasano earned his first professional win on the mound. Fasano tossed a one-hitter through three innings out of the bullpen, following a short outing by Brewers starter Damien Magnifico. Magnifico went two innings, giving up one run on a pair of hits.

 

The Brewers pounded out eight hits and never trailed in the contest, doing most of their damage against Voyagers starter Keegan Linza. Linza (5-3) was peppered with four runs on seven hits, but did strike out six through five frames.

 

Helena’s defense did its job, turning three double plays. Alfredo Rodriguez and Adam Giacalone were in on all of the twin killings. Giacalone also had an RBI double in the contest, one of three extra-base hits for the Brewers.

Morris and Gennett Named to Southern League Post-Season All-Star Team

MARIETTA, GA – Huntsville Stars first baseman Hunter Morris and second baseman Scooter Gennett have been named to the Southern League Post-Season All-Star team for their respective positions.

 

Morris is hitting .297 (151-for-509) in his first full-season with the Stars. He leads the league in home runs (26), doubles (39), slugging percentage (.550), extra-base hits (71) and total bases (280). He’s in the top five in a handful of other categories: batting, games (2nd - 133), at bats (2nd - 509), hits (2nd - 151) and runs scored (5th - 73). The Huntsville native has the fourth-best home run to at-bat ratio with one homer per every 19.58 at-bats. The 23-year-old was named to the Mid-Season All-Star team and was named the Southern League Player of the Week on June 16 and July 9. He was also the Southern League Topps Player of the Month for June and July and the Brewers Minor League Player of the Month for April and June. Morris was drafted by the Brewers in the fourth round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft.

 

Gennett currently holds the fifth-best batting average in the Southern League at .296. He leads the league in at bats (521) and hits (154) and is in the top five in games played (tied for 3rd – 130), doubles (4th – 30) and total bases (5th – 203). He also boasts the fifth lowest strikeout per plate appearance ratio at 7.99. The 22-year-old was named Southern League Player of the Week on April 23. He was also selected as a Mid-Season All-Star and selected to play in the Futures Game.

 

The Stars most recent Post-Season All-Star selection was second baseman Brett Lawrie in 2010. The last time the team had multiple players represented was in 2008 with Angel Salome, Mat Gamel, Alcides Escobar and Michael Brantley.
