Monday's Brevard County/Lakeland game postponed

Teams will play doubleheader on Tuesday

LAKELAND, Fla. - Due to unplayable field conditions and continual inclement weather stemming from Tropical Storm Isaac, the scheduled game on Monday, August 27 between the Brevard County Manatees and the Lakeland Flying Tigers at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland has been postponed.

 

The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Tuesday, August 28 beginning at 5:00 PM (4:00 Central). Brevard County and Lakeland will play two seven-inning games.

Mike Walker named FSL Post-Season All-Star

Marysville, Calif. native leads 'Tees in both hits and total bases

VIERA, Fla. - Florida State League president Chuck Murphy announced on Monday that Brevard County Manatees third baseman Mike Walker was selected to the 2012 Florida State League Post-Season All-Star team. The team was selected by field managers, official scorers and club sports writers representing the twelve teams in the league.

 

As of Monday, Walker has played in 123 of Brevard County's 129 games and is sixth in the Florida State League with 68 RBI and eighth in the league in hits with 122. He also ranks second in the Brewers' minor league system in RBI.

 

The Marysville, Calif. native leads the Manatees in both hits and total bases with 173. Walker is second on the team in both runs (59) and home runs (9).

 

Earlier this season, Walker reached base in 21 consecutive games from June 22 to August 12. In that stretch, he hit .386 and had an on-base percentage of .482.

 

This is Walker's second All-Star selection in his professional career as he was named a Mid-Season All-Star in the Midwest League with Class-A Wisconsin in 2011.

 

Walker is in his third professional season and was drafted by Milwaukee out of the University of Pacific in the 14th round of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

Caleb Gindl Named PCL Batter Of The Week

Outfielder Led League In Hits, RBIs While Batting .533 In Seven Games

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Nashville Sounds outfielder Caleb Gindl has been named the Pacific Coast League's Batter of the Week for the August 20-26 period.

 

The 23-year-old posted a .533 average (16-for-30) with a league-leading 10 RBIs in seven games over the seven-day span. Gindl rapped eight of his league-high 16 hits for extra bases during the week (five doubles, one triple, two home runs).

 

Gindl, who recorded five multiple-hit efforts and hit safely in six of the seven games, set several season highs during the week.

 

On Tuesday at Omaha, he clubbed a pair of homers, just his second career multi-homer effort, and became the first Nashville player to record four RBIs in a game this season. On Friday at Round Rock, he went a season-best 4-for-4 and legged out a Sounds season-high three doubles. On Sunday at The Dell Diamond, he drove in three runs while finishing a homer short of the cycle (3-for-5).

 

Overall, Gindl has batted .263 with a team-high 27 doubles and ranks second on the club with 11 home runs and 49 RBIs in 122 games for Nashville this season, his second straight campaign at the Triple-A level. He leads the Sounds with 185 total bases entering tonight's action.

 

Gindl's award is the third accumulated by a Sounds player during the 2012 season, following infielder Brooks Conrad (May 21-27) and starting pitcher Wily Peralta (July 2-8).

 

The award is the third weekly honor of Gindl's six-year career. He was previously honored by the Florida State League in April 2009 and by the South Atlantic League in August 2008.

 

Gindl and the Sounds begin their final homestand of the season tonight at Greer Stadium, where they'll host the division-rival Iowa Cubs in the 7:05 p.m. opener of a four-game series.

Rattlers drop fourth straight

PEORIA, IL - Starling Peralta and the Peoria Chiefs sent the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to their fourth straight loss by handing Wisconsin a 7-3 defeat Monday night. The Chiefs took charge with some early runs while Peralta and two relievers kept the Timber Rattlers hitters in check.

 

The Chiefs (62-70 overall, 27-36 second half) scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead. The first Peoria run scored on a throwing error. Tim Saunders stole third and scored with the throw sailed into left field. Later in the inning Jacob Rogers hit a two-run homer to right field for a 3-0. An error kept the inning going and eventually led to an unearned run scoring on a single by Bijan Rademacher.

 

Wisconsin (74-58, 30-33) got their first base runner of the game in the fifth inning. Cameron Garfield spoiled Peoria starting pitcher Starling Peralta's string of 12 straight batters retired with a leadoff single in the fifth. Garfield took second on a wild pitch and third on a ground out. Mike Garza drove in Garfield with a sacrifice fly to put the Rattlers on the scoreboard.

 

In the sixth, Max Walla's fly ball to center was lost in the lights and dropped behind the centerfielder for a triple that scored Chadwin Stang from first base. That pulled the Rattlers to within two runs.

 

Peoria scored a run in the bottom of the sixth and the Rattlers lost Garfield on the same play. Rademacher singled to left with two outs and Rogers headed to the plate. Lane Roenicke's throw was in time, but Rogers dove for the back part of the plate. Garfield went around with a sweep tag and Rogers was ruled safe. Both Garfield and pitcher Chad Pierce vehemently argued that Rogers had missed home plate. Manager Matt Erickson came out to protect his players and make his points. Garfield and Pierce had moved away from the manager and the umpire when the base umpire ejected Garfield.

 

The call stood and the Chiefs led 5-2. That was the final run allowed by Pierce, who tossed six innings and struck out five for the Rattlers.

 

Peralta struck out eight and allowed two runs over six innings before turning the game over to the bullpen. Peralta would win his fifth game of the season.

 

Peoria tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. A sacrifice fly by Chadd Krist and an RBI single by Rogers put the Chiefs up 7-2.

 

Wisconsin got a run in the ninth. Garza doubled to start the inning. He took third on a grounder. Lance Roenicke's sacrifice fly drove in Garza for the final run of the game.

 

The Chiefs have beaten Wisconsin in six of the last seven meetings between the teams..

 

Wisconsin and Peoria play for the final time this season on Tuesday night. David Goforth (9-8, 4.93) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. The Rattlers have now dropped 6 of their last 7 to Peoria and 7 of their last 10 overall. They managed just five hits in tonight's loss. Cameron Garfield was 1 for 2 with a walk prior to being ejected in the 6th inning. Max Walla was 1-4 with a triple. Michael Garza went 1-3 with a double. Brandon Macias and Chadwin Stang had the other two Wisconsin hits. Garfield and Adrian Williams each committed an error.

 

Chad Pierce was the Timber Rattlers starter. He went six innings and gave up five runs, four earned, on six hits. He walked two and struck out five. He also hit a batter. Stosh Wawrzasek pitched two innings of relief. He gave up two runs on three hits and struck out three.

Sounds Open Homestand With 4-3 Win Over Cubs

Brian Baker Tosses His Fifth Quality Start

 

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds opened their final homestand of the season with a 4-3 victory over the division-rival Iowa Cubs on Monday at Greer Stadium.

 

The one-run victory was Nashville's PCL-leading 28th of the season. Iowa suffered its 32nd one-run defeat. Seven of the 13 games between the two clubs in the series have been decided by one run.

 

Nashville starter Brian Baker pitched well to collect his fourth victory of the season. The 29-year-old allowed one run on a solo homer in six innings of work, fanning six in 82 pitches (60 strikes). Baker has posted a 2.62 ERA (18er/61.2ip) in his last 12 PCL outings (10 starts).

 

First baseman Jordan Brown went 3-for-4 to lead the Sounds offense. Second baseman Taylor Green added two hits, including a double. Shortstop Eric Farris also singled to extend his hitting streak to a season-best 11 games.

 

The Sounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against former Sound Seth McClung. Outfielder Khris Davis worked a two-out walk, moved to second on a single from Brown, and scored Green when blooped an RBI single to right field.

 

Reigning PCL Batter of the Week Caleb Gindl went yard in the next frame off McClung for a 2-0 advantage. The long ball from Gindl was his 12th homer of the season, which landed just beyond the right field wall.

 

Iowa cut the lead in half at 2-1 in the fourth as Greg Rohan crushed a solo homer down the left field line.

 

Nashville added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 4-1 lead. With the bases loaded and two out, catcher Dayton Buller lined a two-run single over the second baseman and into right field to score both Davis and Brown.

 

After a Rohan had two-out single in the ninth, Dave Sappelt hit two-run homer over the left field wall to bring the Cubs within one run at 4-3. Robert Wooten then got James Adduci to ground out and end the game for his sixth save of the season.

 

Reliever Brandon Kintzler fanned three over two scoreless innings. Wooten was charged with two runs in an inning.

 

McClung scattered eight hits for four runs while walking four and striking out five in five innings for his league-leading 15th loss of the season.

 

The Sounds and Cubs continue their series at 7:05 pm CT on Tuesday night at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Tyler Thornburg (1-2, 2.79) takes the mound for Nashville against Iowa southpaw Horacio Ramirez (0-0, 1.38).

Beat! The! Cubs! After listening to Brad Nelson beat the hell out of Nashville pitching all season I was worried that Seth McClung would get the best of the Sounds as well, but thankfully that didn't happen. Brian Baker is making an interesting late season push... in his last 10 games he's only had 1 poor start (5R in 5.2IP on 7/28) and has pitched to a 2.72 ERA over that span allowing 51 hits, 22 walks, and 17 earned runs over 56.1 innings. He's been HR prone, giving up 7, but he's also struck out 51 batters.

 

Tyler and his 85 pitch limit is up next, and I'm not cracking on him, it just is what it is... he has 2 more starts left in the season with Nashville. He's only pitched 118 innings so far this season after pitching 136 last year. I would have liked to see him push to 160 this season but 2 minor injuries and Melvin messing around putting him in the bullpen while the Brewers made their big "push" has him way off track. He will need Sept MLB starts or AFL starts to even match last year's total.

The Barons drubbed starter Evan Anundsen to the tune of 6 R/5 ER through 3.1 IP, and added three more runs off the bullpen. After Birmingham's three-run 4th extended their lead to 6-1, the Stars rallied back with three of their own in the home half of the inning -- Josh Prince's 3-R HR cut the lead to 6-4, but that's the closest Huntsville got.

 

Southern League MVP candidate Hunter Morris saw his late-August WOAHs continue, with an 0-4 game. Morris sports a sub-.600 OPS over his last ten games, and has seen his season OPS drop under .900 (currently .883) during this slump. Hopefully Hunter can right the ship and not let a shot at the MVP slip away.

 

Scooter Gennett went 1-4, but his lone hit was a solo HR on a letters-high pitch in the bottom of the 1st. Seven of the nine Stars in the lineup tonight tallied at least one hit, but they weren't able to string enough together to rally back tonight.

Huntsville Stars drop 9-5 decision to Birmingham

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- What had been obvious, but not official until Monday, is that the Stars are out of the playoffs and won't finish above .500.

 

That was assured Monday night with their 9-5 loss to Birmingham, putting Huntsville at 63-71 on the season with six games to play. Coupled with Chattanooga's win over Jackson, they are now seven games behind Chattanooga for what could be a potential wild-card spot.

 

Huntsville, which ends its home season Tuesday at 6:43 against Birmingham, could still influence one pennant race.

 

It ends the season with five games at Montgomery, which is dueling Jacksonville for a Southern League South playoff spot. The Suns won their fourth in a row over the Biscuits Monday, giving them a one-game lead in the division.

 

The Barons are 61-72 on the season and already out of postseason contention.

 

Though Scooter Gennett's solo homer and Josh Prince's three-run homer tried to keep the Huntsville offense in Monday's game, starter Evan Anundsen gave up six runs and nine hits in 3 1/3 innings. Reliever Brian Garman yielded two hits -- one of them allowing two of Anundsen's runners to score -- then Tim Dillard gave up two runs in two innings and Josh Butler another run, on three hits, in the Birmingham eighth.

 

Andy Wilkins had four hits and Brady Shoemaker at homer for the Barons, who have won nine of their last 11 against the Stars.

 

Hunter Morris went 0-for-4, making him 8-for-36 in the past two series, a cooling off with poor timing; deadline for the Southern League MVP, for which he should be a favorite, is Wednesday

 

The Stars haven't reached the playoffs since 2009 and haven't finished about .500 since 2008. In the 14 years of Huntsville's affiliation with Milwaukee, the Stars have finished above .500 only five times.

 

The Brewers made a head-scratching move on Monday. With a mere eight games remaining on Nashville's schedule, they demoted Dillard - who first pitched in Huntsville in 2006 - to the Stars. Dillard is a Nashville resident and had a chance to become the Sounds' all-time winning pitcher over the coming week. To pinpoint one source of the Stars' inconsistency was the constant movement of players. Dillard became the 30th pitcher to see action for Huntsville this season when he entered in the sixth inning.

Brewers oust Owlz

For six and a half innings on Monday it appeared as though the Orem Owlz would escape Helena with a sweep and hand the Brewers their fifth straight loss. However, from the bottom of the seventh on the Brewers looked like a whole new baseball team and grabbed a 9-8 victory in ten innings.

 

When Joe Andrade stepped to the plate in the bottom of the seventh the Brewers trailed the Owlz 7-2. Andrade then drew a leadoff walk and after Renaldo Jenkins flied out, Ruben Ozuna singled. It was at that point that the Brewers successfully completed a double steal as Raul Mondesi Jr. went down on strikes.

 

Following the double steal, outfielder Jose Pena doubled to right field knocking in Ozuna. Paul Eshleman then struck out, but due to a wild pitch was able to reach first putting runners on the corners. First baseman Adam Giacalone would then draw a walk to load the bases for shortstop Alfredo Rodriguez.

 

Rodriguez, who has not been retired when batting with the bases loaded, delivered and the Brewers cut the lead to one entering the bottom of the seventh. After the Owlz took one run back, the Brewers responded with another in the bottom of the eighth and eventually would enter the bottom of the ninth trailing 8-7.

 

Down to just two outs, after Pena struck out to begin the frame, Eshleman doubled to centerfield. This created a scenario in which once again Rodriguez could be the hero. The University of Maryland product again delivered and knocked in pinch runner Andres Martinez to send the game into extra innings.

 

After the Brewers escaped a bases loaded jam in the top of the tenth, the Brewers came to bat needing one run to send a season high 1903 fans home happy. It was at that point Jenkins, who had just flown into Helena hours before, drew a lead off walk.

 

Thanks to a balk by Owlz reliever Joey Krehbiel, Jenkins stood 180 feet from home with no outs and Ozuna at the plate. Ozuna would go down on strikes, but teammate Mondesi Jr. would lift him up with a game winning RBI double to left field.

 

The win pushes Helena's record to 21-45 on the season, while the loss drops Orem to 33-33.

 

The Brewers return home on September 3, when the Billings Mustangs come to town to begin the final home stand of the 2012 season.

Raul Mondesi Jr. ripped a walk-off RBI double to left field with one out in the 10th inning, and the Helena Brewers snapped a five-game Pioneer League losing streak with a thrilling 9-8 home win over the Orem Owlz on Monday night.

 

Helena’s Renaldo Jenkins drew a leadoff walk from Orem’s Joseph Krehbiel to start the bottom of the 10th, and then advanced to second off a balk from Krehbiel before Ruben Ozuna struck out swinging and Mondesi Jr. came up clutch.

 

In a game that featured 12 hits and shaky pitching from both teams, Connor Whalen was a calming presence for the Brewers as he allowed just two hits, no runs and struck out one in 2.2 innings of work for his first win of the year.

 

Brewers starter Tyler Wagner and Owlz starter Nataniel Rodriguez lasted a combined six innings and allowed 10 hits, eight runs and six walks between them.

 

Mondesi Jr. was 2 for 5 with a pair of RBIs, and Alfredo Rodriguez was 2 for 3 with three RBIs to lead Helena.

 

Orem’s Zac Livingston was 2 for 3 with three RBIs, all of which came on a fourth-inning homer that got his team within 7-6.

Wow, what a game for the young H-Crew. This one had everything. Helena C Joe Andrade stole home plate. Helena walked nearly as much as they struck out. [sarcasm]5 XBH's in one game![/sarcasm]

 

Tyler Wagner started and was not his best. The K's keep pouring in and the BB's are manageable as long as they are not accompanied by wild pitches and HBP's. Tyler managed to avoid those dreaded extras yesterday. Joel Pierce continues to string together good outings, now 5 in a row. That is tremendous progress for the 19-year-old from the great North. Connor Whalen continues to be the most effective pitcher on the staff with a 8 out W to end the game.

 

There is a lot to talk about with the bats. Ruben Ozuna (3-6 2 SB) and Raul Mondesi Jr. (2-5 2B BB GW Hit) powered the top of the lineup. Jose Pena (2-5 2 2B) is transferring his considerable bat speed and power to Helena (0 BB and 8 K in 11 games). Paul Eshleman smacked a 9th inning 2B and was pinch-run for by Andres Martinez who promptly scored the tying run. Adam Giacalone (1-2 3 BB) probably hasn't seen a centered FB in 3 weeks. Alfredo Rodriguez (2-3 2 BB) got back on track. Renaldo "Ra Ra" Jenkins, who started at 2B, took a walk in the 10th and came around to score on Raul Mondesi Jr.'s 2B.

 

Raul Mondesi Jr. also gunned down another runner, this time at 1B. That's 10.

The AZL Dodgers are just about as bad as the Brewers with the bat. At least with the lineup they threw out there last night.

 

Certainly credit 2012 3rd rounder Zachary Quintana with making sure they didn't heat up too much. He got 15 outs, gave up 4 H 1 R 0 ER 1 BB and notched 7 K and 2:2 GO:FO. That might be his best to date and points to his true talent level. Danny Keller threw 2 scoreless innings. This is not a misprint. I really hope Danny can find his footing. Austin Blaski managed just 1 out while allowing 4 R and it could have been worse. Carlos Sosa stranded 2 of Blaski's 3 runners. I am mildly surprised that Sosa has not advanced further through the system.

 

With the lumber, Jalen Harris (2-5 3B) and Clint Coulter (2-3 HR BB) made a lot happen out of the 2-3 holes. Coulter is going to need more games like this before he gets the recognition he possibly deserves. Alan Sharkey went 1-2 with 2 BB while Angel Ortega and Malcolm Dowell each had a H and BB. (And I have just realized I have been ruining the spelling of Malcolm's 1st name. That is embarrassing ad I am very sorry MD.)
