Chiefs soak Rattlers

PEORIA, IL - It was a wet Sunday afternoon in Peoria and the Peoria Chiefs defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 10-3. Jeff Antigua dampened the Rattlers offense with seven scoreless innings. Dustin Geiger swamped the Rattlers with three hits and three RBI to pace a 13-hit attack.

 

Peoria (61-70 overall, 26-36 second half) started the bottom of the first inning with four consecutive singles. Geiger and Jorge Soler had singles that knocked in runs to put the Chiefs up 2-0.

 

Geiger struck again in the third inning. Pin Chieh Chen, who scored four runs in the game, doubled to start the inning. Geiger followed with an RBI single and the Chiefs were up 3-0.

 

Jacob Rogers made it 4-0 with a mammoth homer off the scoreboard in right-center field in the bottom of the sixth inning.

 

The Chiefs added a run with assistance from the Rattlers in the seventh. Chen reached on an error. Geiger walked to put two runners on base. An error on a grounder to short by Soler allowed Chen to score for a 5-0 lead.

 

Antigua handcuffed the Rattlers for seven innings. The lefty allowed three hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out seven.

 

Peoria sent ten men to the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning and scored five runs to take a 10-0 lead.

 

Wisconsin (74-57, 30-32) went to bat in a steadily worsening downpour in the top of the ninth inning and loaded the bases with one out on a single, an error, and a hit batsman. Ben McMahan drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run. Nick Ramirez grounded into a force play at second that let the second run score. Mike Garza followed with an RBI single to right-center. But, that was as close as the Rattlers would get to the Chiefs.

 

The loss was the third straight for Wisconsin.

 

Game three of the series is Monday night. Chad Pierce (7-4, 3.34) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Starling Peralta (4-8, 3.38) is the scheduled starter for the Chiefs. Looking at a radar map, and based on some of Chris's comments, this was a game that probably never should have been played. There was a pretty steady rain for most of the game and it led to plenty of sloppy play. Errors, multiple runners slipping around the bases, grounds crew stoppages, just not a good day for baseball.

 

The Rattlers got three runs on six hits. All six hits were singles, and two of those six were of the infield variety. Michael Garza had a 2-4 day with an RBI. Chadwin Stang, Brandon Macias, Yadiel Rivera and Carlos George each went 1-3 for the other Rattlers hits. Garza and Rivera each committed an error and Nick Ramirez was tossed in the ninth inning.

 

Mark Williams dropped his record to 7-10, but didn't pitch horribly given the conditions. He allowed five runs, four earned over seven innings. Michael White on the other hand was just not good in his one inning of work. He gave up five runs on five hits and walked two. His ERA climbed from 8.31 to 12.10. You'd have to think the almost 23 year old righty will be the odd man out if/when Stephen Peterson is ready to return.

Bad pitching and plate discipline is one way to put it. I'll leave it at that. The only pitcher not roughed up was Connor Whalen who threw a scoreless 9th inning with 2 K. Before him, Elliot Glynn managed to give up a run despite allowing no hits in 2.1 IP.

 

For the hitters, Paul Eshleman (1-3 HR) smacked his 2nd homer in two nights. Adam Giacalone (2-4) had his first two hit game in forever. Jose Pena smacked the ball around the park with a 3-4 night including a 3B. Zero walks for the Brewers who all seem to be itching to head home at this point.

Owlz cruise to 10-4 victory

The Pioneer League's most prolific offense wasted no time on Sunday afternoon at Kindrick Legion Field. The Owlz would eventually cruise to a 10-4 victory in game two of three over the Helena Brewers.

 

Brewers starter Leonard Lorenzo, who has struggled since posting a career high 12 strikeouts against Missoula on August 9, failed to find his command in the first inning of action allowing the Owlz to grab a 3-0 lead before an out was recorded.

 

The Brewers offense finished the game with nine hits and five runs on the afternoon, but thanks to four straight scoring frames by Orem starting in the fourth, the home team never had a real shot to grab the win.

 

Right fielder Jose Pena led the charge for the Brewers going 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored. First baseman Adam Giacalone pitched in two more hits over four at bats and raised his batting average to a team leading .324.

 

Brewers starter Leonard Lorenzo was tabbed with his seventh loss of the season raising his ERA to 5.70. Owlz reliever Aaron Newcomb earned the victory on the strength of 3.1 innings, three strikeouts and two earned runs. The victory coupled with Grand Junction's loss at Great Falls gives the Owlz sole possession of first place in the Southern Division of the Pioneer League.

Sounds Score Six In 9th To Take Road Finale

Farris Goes 4-for-6 With Homer To Extend Hit Streak To 10 Games

 

ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Nashville Sounds plated six runs in the top of the ninth inning, capped by a two-run Eric Farris homer, to record an 11-5 victory on Sunday evening at The Dell Diamond in the club's final road game of the season.

 

The Sounds (63-73), who rapped out 15 hits and were not retired in order in any of the nine innings in the contest, recorded their 23rd last at-bat win of the season to finish their final road trip with a 4-5 record. The 11 runs marked just the fourth double-digit scoring total for Nashville this year.

 

Nashville plated all six of its ninth-inning runs off Round Rock left-hander Ben Snyder (3-6), who took the loss.

 

After retiring Khris Davis on a groundout to start the ninth, Snyder proceeded to walk the next three Nashville batters to load the bases. Andy Gonzalez stepped to the plate and lifted a sacrifice fly to deep right that plated Corey Patterson with the go-ahead run.

 

The Sounds followed with three consecutive extra-base hits off Snyder to turn a nailbiter into a rout.

 

Caleb Gindl, who kept the game tied with an outstanding throw to the plate in the bottom of the eighth, delivered a two-run triple into the right field corner and Humberto Quintero drove a 1-0 offering from Snyder into right-center, just past a diving Leonys Martin, to plate the fourth run of the frame. Farris capped off the six-run outburst by crushing a two-run homer to left, his sixth roundtripper of the year, to bring the score to its final 11-5 standing.

 

Farris went 4-for-6 with three RBIs on the night to up his hitting streak to 10 games, matching the infielder's best effort of the season. Gindl went 3-for-5 with three RBIs to finish an outstanding series in Round Rock with 11 hits in 21 at-bats, including six extra-base knocks.

 

Nashville took a 1-0 lead in the second when Taylor Green led off with a single against Express starter Zach Jackson, moved to second on a balk, and came around to score on Gindl's one-out RBI double to right.

 

The Express responded immediately, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame against Wily Peralta to grab a 2-1 advantage.

 

Former Sound Brad Nelson evened the contest when he led off with his 23rd home run of the year, a solo shot to left. The Express took the lead with back-to-back two-out hits off the Sounds right-hander. With two down, Ryan Spilborghs doubled and scored when Brandon Snyder followed with a broken-bat RBI single to center.

 

The Sounds rallied to tie the contest in the fourth. Gindl singled with one out and hustled to score all the way from first on a Farris double down the left field line. On the play, Gindl adeptly slip around an attempted tag by Round Rock catcher Koyie Hill.

 

Peralta walked the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the fourth but was able to escape the jam by striking out Snyder and inducing an inning-ending comebacker from Hill to keep the game deadlocked.

 

Nashville reclaimed the lead in the fifth with a three-run frame against Jackson that was highlighted by Jordan Brown's two-run homer that sailed over the Sounds' bullpen in right-center.

 

Davis led off with a double to left-center and scored when Sean Halton, who reached base in all five of his plate appearances on the night, followed with a one-hop single up the middle that deflected off the glove of shortstop Alberto Gonzalez. Brown followed by crushing his eighth big fly of the year to make it a 5-2 contest.

 

Peralta, who took a no-decision, gave the runs right back to Round Rock in the bottom of the frame as the Express rallied for three two-out scores to tie the contest at 5-5.

 

After the first two batters were retired, Leonys Martin singled, swiped second, and scored on an RBI single off the bat of Nelson. Peralta then walked the next two batters on a combined nine pitches to fill the bases with Round Rock runners. With two down and the bases loaded, Spilborghs turned an 0-2 Peralta offering into a game-tying, two-run double onto the warning track in the right field corner.

 

Gindl kept the game at a 5-5 deadlock in the bottom of the eighth when he threw out Spilborghs at the plate to end the inning as he attempted to score from second on an Alberto Gonzalez single to right. Spilborghs had led off the frame with a double to right-center off Fautino De Los Santos that was nearly snared by a diving Schafer.

 

The Sounds begin a season-ending, eight-game homestand with on Monday with the 7:05 p.m. opener of a four-game series against the division-rival Iowa Cubs. Right-hander Brian Baker (3-4, 4.39) will man the bump for the Sounds. Iowa will counter with former Sounds right-hander Seth McClung (3-14, 6.32), who started 20 games for Nashville earlier this season before being released by the Brewers organization.

Quite the finish after an uninspiring 5 innings from Peralta, I actually quit listening during the 5th so I missed the 6 run 9th as I just got back to the computer now.

 

Interesting that the Sounds will be facing Seth McClung tomorrow.

A brilliant pitching performance from Huntsville was one-upped tonight by the Barons. Birmingham starter Nestor Molina allowed just five 1Bs and one BB over seven innings, and Brandon Kloess worked the final two frames to secure the shutout.

 

Josh Stinson did what he's done all season, and turned in another good outing -- six innings with one run allowed. Johnny Hellweg was perfect over 2 IP in his fourth relief appearance... and fourth two-inning relief appearance. Kyle Heckathorn was also perfect in his lone inning of work, the 9th.

 

Huntsville's hits were limited to six 1Bs, and they only managed one BB on top of that. Not much to talk about here, but they did have scoring opportunities in the 4th, 6th, & 8th (see the PbP section below).

A quick 4-run 1st inning off of Andre Lamontagne really put the Maryvale squad behind the 8-ball. Austin Hall, Eduard Reyes and Jeffry Saba combined to work the final 8 IP allowing 7 H 3 R 3 ER 1 BB 1 WP 2 HBP and notching 6 K. Hall in particular was effective going 3 shutout innings.

 

At the plate, a number of Brewers hitters had big games. Lead-off Edgardo Rivera went 2-4 with a 2B and BB as he pestered the Mariners pitchers all night. They got some revenge by picking him off of 1B. Lanky SS Angel Ortega wen 3-4 and has his average hovering in the 2.20-.230 range. Malcom Dowell went 2-4 with a 3B, his 3rd XBH in 42 games. Clint Coulter was 0-4 with 3 K.

 

Every hitter struck out at least once for Maryvale (14 K total).

Brewers drop fourth in a row

Orem jumped ahead in the first inning and never looked back en route to a 10-5 victory over the Helena Brewers on Sunday afternoon at Kindrick Legion Field.

 

The Owlz scored three runs in the top of the first and never trailed the rest of the way, despite allowing the Brewers to pull within one run in the bottom of the second and fourth innings.

 

Designated hitter Paul Eshelman led Helena with a two-run home run, while right fielder Jose Pena finished 3 for 4 with a triple, and first baseman Adam Giacalone was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

 

Orem shortstop Wendell Soto was 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs.

 

Helena’s Leonard Lorenzo allowed six runs in 4 1/3 innings on the mound and was tagged with the loss, while Orem’s Aaron Newcomb got the win.

STARS SHUT OUT BY BARONS

 

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.- For the fourth time since August 1st , an opponent shut out the Huntsville Stars as they were blanked by the Birmingham Barons by a score of 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Joe Davis Stadium.

 

The only run of the ballgame came in the top half of the fourth inning. To begin the frame, Barons first baseman Seth Loman singled off of Stars starting pitcher Josh Stinson. After advancing to second on a walk to left fielder Brady Shoemaker, Loman scored on a RBI single by third baseman Eric Morrison to give Birmingham the lead for good.

 

To shut out the Stars, the Barons combined to use just two pitchers, headlined by starter Nestor Molina. The 23-year-old righty improved to 5-11 on the year after pitching seven innings of scoreless baseball while giving up just five hits and without striking out a batter. Aside from Molina, reliever Brandon Kloess earned his third save of the season after blanking the Stars offense in the final two innings of the game.

 

On the pitching side for Huntsville, Stinson fell to 11-8 on the year after giving up just one run on five hits through six innings. The start was Stinson’s sixth time toeing the rubber without notching his 12th win of the season. Following his exit in the seventh inning, relievers Johnny Hellweg and Kyle Heckathorn combined to throw three scoreless innings for the Stars.

 

On offense, the shutout was the 11th time this season Huntsville has been blanked by an opponent. Right fielder Lee Haydel led the way with two of the Stars six hits on the game.

 

Game four of a five-game series will take place on Monday as the Stars will send RHP Evan Anundsen (5-7, 4.77 ERA) to the mound. First pitch is at 6:43 PM.
