Dodgers attempting to acquire most of the Red Sox

Recommended Posts

Whoa, I did not see the Red Sox dealing Gonzalez coming. Geez... is this legit & a done deal?

Gordon Edes is claiming it's pretty much a done deal. It's not Just Gonzalez & Beckett either. Carl Crawford and Nick Punto are included.

The Dodgers and Red Sox are closing in on a deal that would send Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Nick Punto to Los Angeles, though a few hurdles remain before it's official, multiple baseball sources said Friday.

Pitcher Rubby De La Rosa will be headed back to Boston as the centerpiece of the deal, sources say. De La Rosa made his first major league appearance of the season Wednesday, having had Tommy John surgery about 13 months ago. Also included are first baseman James Loney and prospects Ivan De Jesus (infielder) and Jerry Sands (outfielder), according to sources, plus another top prospect that is still unknown.

This potential trade feels about as close to a "video game" trade you're ever going to see in real life MLB.

Or fantasy baseball...

I'd hate to be a Sox fan right about now... Ahhhh, screw them, I have no pity for them whatsoever.

How is Carl Crawford involved? I thought I remember seeing on here that you can't trade players on the DL?

You can but the commissioner needs to approve it I am going to assume that Bud Selig will approve this as the stars are going from one major market to another.

On the one hand, giving up on A-Gon so early seems kind of dumb. On the other hand, I would despite this trade if I were a Dodgers fan. Team has a huge pool of money to spend this off season but ownership just committed it all to a bunch of overpaid players in a salary dump.

Ah, thanks. I just remember everyone saying that we couldn't trade Marcum at the trade deadline because he was on the DL. Not saying that we would've got much in return for a pitcher on the DL.

Well the players the Dodgers are supposedly giving up are not all that great especially for what the Dodgers are getting. Even with the salaries that are involved with this move if all of the players truly are involved it seems like the Red Sox are getting a rather bad deal.

As for free agency after this season who exactly would be better than Adrian Gonzalez and Crawford? Other than Josh Hamilton who would the Dodgers be interested in? Beckett and Punto there would be better options but the Dodgers really don't need another starter really and Punto is only going to cost $1.5m which is fine for a utility player. I would rather have Crawford and Gonzalez over Hamilton.

Is there a chance that Selig could veto? It's obviously just a mega salary dump for the Red Sox; they aren't even pretending to get equal value in return. Can he invoke "the best interests of baseball" to stop it?

(My surmise is that he probably thinks it is in the best interests of baseball to have three overpaid stars going to LA.)

Carl Crawford was below replacement level for most of last season. Dude has completely fallen off the cliff. Maybe a change of scene will do him wonders, but it's a huge commitment to take a gamble on. Beckett is also horrible and overpaid at this point. Adrian Gonzalez is the only good return (he's gone from elite to merely-good, but only over 2/3 of a season), but even then you are taking on a mega-contract when you don't need to.

They could have gotten Greinke, Bourn, and Hamilton for the money they're spending (unless Red Sox are paying a substantial amount). Probably could have gotten Berkman to play 1B too.

It's good for LA because they got a very good 1B long-term, and there aren't any long-term 1B on the market, but wow did they take on a lot of money/risk.

I think there is a small chance that he may veto it but probably only the Crawford part of the deal (my opinion). Selig could do a Stern and veto it all together but I doubt that will happen.

Crawford is out for a year, and at his age coming back from ACL surgery saps his one remaining decent tool. Gonzalez has a surprisingly favorable contract, so the Dodgers are taking on bad salaries to get fixture at 1B and not having to part with any major prospects. It's a solid deal for both sides, especially with how clear Gonzalez has made it that he hates Boston.

As far as I know, Crawford's ACL is fine. He had Tommy John surgery. So he still has his most important tool.

Wow, no kidding.

I think the Dodgers are going to be back in terrible shape in another two or three seasons, if it even takes that long. Ownership had to Make A Statement™... they're Committed To Winning™!

I think the Red Sox are actually getting more than fair value. Nick Punto is just a backup infielder, he doesn't have a ton of value. Beckett and Crawford are bad contracts and you could make the argument Gonzalez is too. Getting two really good prospects plus some filler is a good deal for the Red Sox.

I guess I'd argue this is good for baseball. This isn't one team acting as another's farm system. In part because this is so unusual it opens possibilities of the big trade and the excitement that creates. Arguably this gets some good talent flowing back to the NL which is also good.

Oh, I agree that this is a net good for the BoSox, long-term. I guess I'm trying to say (in a convoluted way) that Selig -- being Selig -- might act on the misapprehension that too much talent is headed to LA with not enough returning to Boston, especially since we're approaching September. (And LA is just 3 games behind SF in the division and 1.5 back in Wild Card.)
