The Brewers are locked in to the Brevard franchise through 2014.

 

If a move to the Orlando area is in the works for 2015 and beyond in a new facility, surely the Brewers wouldn't mind. Manatees management might like to see a more competitive roster than they've seen in recent years, however.

T.J. Mittelstaedt was a heck of a draft pick in the 44th round. This is a guy who started in the AZL as a 22 year old college guy. The success rate for guys like him are practically nil.

 

Now, in his 1st taste of AA, he is sporting a mid-700's OPS. Starting in AA next year with eyes on a mid-season bump will put Mittelstaedt in pretty good position to at least see time in the big leagues at some point in his career. I think he could be a useful bench guy in the 2011 Mark Kotsay mold myself. That is a steal in the 44th.

 

Great find by the Brewers and great work by T.J. especially.

Caleb Gindl put up a .900 OPS July followed by a .750 OPS August. Sigh.

 

My head tells me he is possibly stalling in AAA but I am not counting Gindl out for having a huge year next season.

 

The offseason is a cruel beast for a player coming off of a sub-par year.

Why He's Here: 0-1, 2.57 ERA, 7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 HR, 0 BB, 12 SO

The Scoop: Touted as one of the game's elite pitching prospects, Miller reported to spring training with a thinned physique and reduced velocity. Disappointing results followed, as Miller posted a 6.17 first-half ERA and walked more than 11 percent of hitters. Around midseason, the Cardinals gave him a brief respite from pitching and made mechanical tweaks. Upon his return they instituted a rule forbidding him from shaking off the catcher's sign. The results have been night and day. Miller's 92-95 mph fastball velocity returned and his command sharpened. In 48 second-half innings, Miller has 3.21 ERA and a cartoonish 52-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Miller turned in arguably his strongest start of the season this week with 12 strikeouts and nary a walk on Tuesday.

The Scoop: Hamilton gets plenty of attention for his wheels. He made history this week by breaking Vince Coleman's minor league stolen-base record and even leads the Southern League with 44 stolen bases despite having been there for just 41 games. What doesn't get enough attention is the improvement that Hamilton has made at the plate to be able to get on base and steal all those bags. With just two home runs this year, Hamilton's power is at the bottom of the scale, but he's done an outstanding job of making adjustments that best suit his skill set. He's cut down on his strikeout rate, increased his walk rate and shown a better overall plan when he's in the batter's box. Hamilton has 45 more stolen bases in 2012 in 12 fewer games than he played in 2011, and it's not because he's getting any faster. It's because he's getting on base at a .419 clip this year compared to .340 a year ago, a testament to his growth as a hitter.

Reds RHP Daniel Corcino turns 22 on Sunday, and there's a chance he may be in Cincinnati before his next birthday. Corcino allowed only one run in 11 innings over two starts this week, strikeout out 10 with just four hits, though he did walk seven. His ERA dropped to 3.06 through 138 1/3 innings for Double-A Pensacola.

 

MAN AMONG BOYS

• Boone Whiting, rhp, Cardinals: A shoulder injury has wiped out much of Whiting's season, which explains why he's back in low Class A Quad Cities after an excellent 2011 season there. He's showing no signs of rust. In two outings this week, Whiting, 23, allowed one run in 12 innings, lowering his ERA in three Midwest League outings to 0.56. Whiting's returning feel for his solid stuff means that this season will likely end before he's ready for it to wrap up. While everyone else is battling the grind of their 130th game of the season, Whiting is just warming up.

'Tees edge Threshers to end skid

VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees snapped a four-game losing streak by holding on to defeat the Clearwater Threshers, 5-4 on Friday night at Space Coast Stadium. The win by the 'Tees is just their fifth in 16 games against the Threshers.

 

Clearwater opened the scoring up in the top of the second on a solo home run by Cameron Rupp off of 'Tees starter Taylor Jungmann (11-6, 3.65). Brevard would tie the game in the bottom of the third and it started with a two-out single by Reggie Keen. Then with Nick Shaw at the plate, Keen would steal second and third and then score on a single to center by Shaw.

 

The Manatees (30-30 second half, 59-69 overall) added to their lead in the fourth thanks to a two-run homer by Cody Hawn, which was his second bomb in the last two games and 12th of the season.

 

The Threshers (32-27, 68-57) though would come right back in the fifth to tie the game at 3-3. Peter Lavin led the inning off with a single and then Jim Murphy hit a ground-rule double to put runners on second and third with no outs. A wild pitch by Jungmann allowed Lavin to score and Murphy would score one batter later on a RBI groundout.

 

Jungmann's night was finished after five innings as he allowed three runs on six hits, while walking three and fanning six.

 

Brevard County would take the lead back once again in the bottom of the fifth and it started with back-to-back singles by Keen and Shaw to lead off the inning. Both would score three batters later on a two-out single to right by Shea Vucinich to make it a 5-3 game in favor of the 'Tees.

 

The duo of Greg Holle and Alan Williams out of the bullpen held the Threshers scoreless in the sixth, seventh and eighth. Holle threw two shutout frames and struck out two, while Williams had one shutout inning of work.

 

Clearwater would make things interesting in the top of the ninth against Brevard's closer Casey Medlen as they strung together three consecutive one-out hits and were able to cut the lead to 5-4. With runners on second and third, Anthony Hewitt hit a rocket on the ground to Mike Walker at third, who then threw out the tying run at home.

 

Now with runners on first and third with two outs, Cameron Rupp stepped into the box and worked a 3-0 count on Medlen. Medlen though would come back with three straight strikes to end the game, Brevard's losing streak and earn his 20th save of the season.

 

The Manatees were able to make up ground in the muddled North Division race as they are now 3.5 games behind both Dunedin and Lakeland for first place. Tampa is a half game back of first and Clearwater is one game behind.

 

The series between Brevard County and Clearwater will continue on Saturday night at 6:35 p.m. as Brandon Williamson (3-9, 6.15) will get the ball for the 'Tees. Southpaw Austin Wright (10-4, 3.42) will toe the rubber for the Threshers. Williamson needs to really perform.

Nice win for BC keeping that last gasp of playoff air in their lungs. Taylor Jungmann started and was pecked for 3 runs in 5 IP. He did K 6 but the control failed him with 3 BB 1 WP 1 HBP. The relievers delivered Taylor with his 11th win by throwing 4 very solid innings. Greg Holle notched 2 scoreless and Alan Williams delivered the ball to Casey Medlen with a 2 run lead. Medlen limped through his save tonight, but he managed to make it work.

 

Joey Paciorek (2-4) notched his 3rd straight multi-hit game. Reggie Keen had 2 hits and 2 steals. The steals led directly to a run for BC. Cody Hawn homered for the 2nd consecutive day giving him 12 now. Nick Shaw also had 2 hits. All singles except for the Hawn homer. Mike Walker has been struggling lately (.269 OPS over last 10).

Sounds Derail Express, 5-2

Burgos Earns First Career Triple-A Victory

 

ROUND ROCK, Texas - Caleb Gindl went 4-for-4 with three doubles to power the Nashville Sounds to a 5-2 victory over the Round Rock Express on Friday evening at The Dell Diamond.

 

Sounds starter Hiram Burgos (1-2) picked up his first career Triple-A victory after holding the Express to two runs (one earned) on four hits over five-plus innings of work. The right-hander walked four batters and struck out three while throwing 102 pitches on the night, his highest workload in six starts since joining Nashville.

 

Nashville (62-72) grabbed a 1-0 lead against Express starter Justin Grimm in the top of the second inning. Sean Halton led off with a double to center and scored the night's first run on Gindl's two-out RBI single.

 

The Sounds increased the advantage to 3-0 in the third. Eric Farris led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a Corey Patterson single, and scored on a Khris Davis sacrifice fly to right. Patterson then scored the second Nashville run of the frame when Jordan Brown followed Davis with a first-pitch RBI single to right.

 

Gindl continued his solid night in the fourth when he led off with the first of his three two-baggers and later scored on a Patterson groundout to make it a 4-0 contest.

 

Nashville missed a chance to add to the lead in the top of the sixth. After the Sounds placed runners on second and third with no outs, Grimm and reliever Neal Cotts combined to strand the runners there and keep the lead at 4-0.

 

Burgos opened the contest with five scoreless frames for Nashville before running into trouble as he tired in the sixth, when Round Rock halved its deficit to 4-2.

 

The Nashville right-hander walked the first three batters of the frame to load the bases before being replaced on the hill. Reliever Amaury Rivas induced a first-pitch flyout from Matt Kata to record the first out then got a potential double play grounder to short off the bat of Joey Butler, but Farris' throw from second on the play was in the dirt and eluded Halton at first base, allowing a pair of Express runs to score.

 

Gindl struck again for the Sounds in the eighth, ripping his third double of the night off the top of the left field wall to plate Andy Gonzalez to up the Nashville lead to 5-2.

 

Five Nashville relievers combined to work four scoreless innings following Burgos' departure, capped by a 1-2-3 ninth by Rob Wooten, who notched his fifth save.

 

Grimm (2-3) took the loss for the Express after giving up four runs on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings of action.

 

The teams continue the series with another 7:05 p.m. meeting on Saturday night. Right-hander Claudio Vargas (6-1, 3.58) will toe the slab for the Sounds and face Round Rock southpaw Martin Perez (7-6, 4.11).

This one went into extras, but the Rocks scored right away in the 11th inning and then held the home team for another tough Helena loss.

 

Taylor Wall started for Helena and he continued his admirable season. 6 IP 6 H 1 R 1 ER 1 BB 4 K 1 WP and a terrific 12:1 GO:FO for Wall. Martin Viramontes went the next 5 innings allowing 6 H 2 R 1 ER 5 BB and notching 6 K and a stellar 7:0 GO:FO ratio. He also committed an error, threw 2 wild pitches and intentionally walked David Dahl twice.

 

With all the worm-burners, the infield was under tremendous pressure to make plays.

After losing four out of five in Mississippi (and nine of their last twelve), the Stars were apparently very happy to get back home. While Hunter Morris (2-4, 3B, HR, 3 RBI), Kentrail Davis (3-4, 2B, HR, 4 RBI), and the offense were busy tallying ten runs on eleven hits, starter Johnnie Lowe turned in another solid 6 IP performance... followed by Josh Butler dominating in 3 IP of relief.

 

After going quietly in the home half of the 1st, the Stars scored two runs in both the 2nd and 3rd off of Barons starter Andre Rienzo. Rienzo was born in Sau Paolo, Brazil (signed as a FA at age 18), which raises two questions for me: 1) how many Brazilian-players are active in any level of MLB... or have ever been active? (Answer to the latter -- one)... and 2) people are allowed to play baseball instead of soccer in Brazil? If you click through to that link I included, you'll see that, like Rienzo, Yan Gomes was also born in Sau Paolo (& just less than one year earlier). It's a big city, but still -- what are the odds there? Interesting side story in this one.

 

Rienzo kept Huntsville off the scoreboard in the 4th and 5th, and Birmingham pulled to 4-2 after the top half of the 6th. But Davis socked a two-out solo HR off Rienzo with two outs in the 6th to push the lead back to three runs. Rienzo finished the 6th, but that was it for him... and the Stars absolutely roasted his replacement, Jon Bachanov, to the tune of 5 ER in just 2 IP. Game over.

Kernels sneak past Rattlers in ten innnings

 

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 3-2 in ten innings on Friday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Trevor Hairgrove's run scoring fielder's choice knocked in the go ahead run and Cedar Rapids held off a late rally in the bottom of the tenth to avoid being swept by the Rattlers in the three game series.

 

Wisconsin (74-55 overall, 30-30 second half) broke the scoreless tie in the fifth inning. Greg Hopkins singled to start the inning. Mike Garza lined a double to left-center with one out and Hopkins raced home to put the Rattlers up 1-0.

 

Rattlers starting pitcher Chad Thompson allowed two hits over five scoreless innings. Then, Santo Manzanillo worked two perfect innings to maintain the 1-0 lead.

 

Eric Semmelhack come on in the top of the eighth inning and walked the leadoff batter. Gary Mitchell followed with a homer to center and the Kernels (49-81, 17-43) were up 2-1.

 

Wisconsin rallied to tie the game with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Cameron Garfield reached second on a dropped fly ball and was replaced by pinch runner Lance Roenicke. Nick Ramirez slammed a single off the glove of a diving Mitchell at first base and Roenicke scored the tying run.

 

The Rattlers had an opportunity to win the game in the bottom of the ninth. Yadiel Rivera doubled to start the inning and was bunted to third base. But, RJ Alvarez, who gave up the run in the bottom of the eighth, got a pair of strikeouts to send the game to extra innings.

 

Semmelhack got the first out of the tenth. Then, a bloop double to left by Mitchell and a bloop single to right by Abel Baker put runners at the corners with one out. Semmlehack jammed Hairgrove on an 0-1 pitch and got a weak grounder up the first baseline. Ramirez thought he fielded the ball in foul territory, but the ball was ruled fair by the plate umpire. Ramirez threw to second for the force out, but Hairgrove beat the throw to first to deny the Rattlers an inning ending double play. Mitchell scored on the play and the Kernels were up 3-2.

 

Nick Mutz retired the first two Rattlers in the bottom of the tenth. Then, Rafael Neda sent a sinking line drive to center. The ball hit in front of Workman, who slipped and fell. The ball rolled to the wall and Neda streaked around to third base for a triple. The Kernels elected to walk Nick Ramirez intentionally and Mutz would get the final out of the game on a grounder to third.

 

The Timber Rattlers begin a brief four game road trip on Saturday night with game one of a series against the Peoria Chiefs. Jacob Barnes (4-5, 3.61) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Joe Zeller (2-4, 3.61) is set to start for the Chiefs. Game time at Peoria Chiefs Stadium is 6:30pm. Brandon Macias was the only Rattler with a multi-hit game tonight. He went 2-5 with a stolen base. Rafael Neda came in to the game late after Cameron Garfield was lifted for a pinch runner. Neda tripled in his only at bat. Michael Garza had a double and an RBI. Chad Thompson and Santo Manzanillo combined for seven scoreless innings, but Eric Semmelhack couldn't hold the lead. He gave up three earned runs in three innings.

One terrific offensive inning was all that was needed in this game. A 9-run 3rd inning basically put away the Indians.

 

Edgardo Rivera (1-4 BB), Jose Sermo (2-3 2B 2 BB), Clint Coulter (2-4 BB), Renaldo Jenkins (2-5 SB) and Malcom Dowell (2-3 BB) were all on base multiple times. Deivi Mejia kicked in a 2B.

 

On the mound, 2012 7th rounder David Otterman made a rehab start pitching a scoreless inning. I think everyone is interested to see what this young Canadian can do. Juan Francisco took the hill next and allowed just 1 ER in his 3 IP. Jonathon Armold was responsible for the next 9 outs, and despite some shoddy D, Armold escaped unscathed in the ER department. Ryan Fasano and Alex Lavandero finished the game with a scoreless inning each.

 

3 more PB's for Coulter. 22 on the season. This is not atypical of a young catcher, especially one who played baseball in the northwest. Remember, Coulter managed all of 42 AB's his SR season, so he played maybe 15 games? Now, if he does not make a tremendous jump for next season, then I will start to worry.

Brewers fall to Grand Junction in 11

A masterful pitching performance from Taylor Wall wasn’t enough for the Helena Brewers Friday night, as they lost 3-2 in 11 innings against Grand Junction at Kindrick Legion Field.

 

Wall scattered six hits over six innings, allowing only one run and leaving with a 2-1 lead. He struck out four and walked only one.

 

Martin Viramontes (1-3) took the loss, pitching five innings in relief and giving up two runs, one unearned. Helena committed three errors on the night.

 

Grand Junction took the lead for the first time when Jeremy McLeod came home on a single by Ashley Graeter in the top of the 11th.

 

Michael Mason (3-0) pitched two innings of one-hit ball in relief to pick up the win for Grand Junction.

 

McLeod led four Grand Junction players with multiple hits, finishing 3 for 5 with one run scored and a double.

 

Designated hitter Paul Eshelman paced Helena’s offense by going 2 for 4 with a home run. Raul Mondesi Jr. and Ruben Ozuna also had two hits.
