The big leaguers play a matinee that day.

 

This is the final cable TV broadcast of the Rattlers scheduled for 2012 (it will be interesting to see if they pick up a playoff game or two.)

LOWELL -- Lowell Spinners left-hander and Red Sox first-round draft pick Brian Johnson was out of the hospital and back at LeLacheur Park Sunday, less than 24 hours after being struck below the left eye by a line drive on his second pitch of Saturday's game against the Hudson Valley Renegades at Fenway Park.

 

Johnson suffered multiple fractures of the orbital bone around his left eye.

 

Johnson, who received a $1,575,000 bonus from the Red Sox as the 31st pick in the draft out of the University of Florida, will not pitch again this season. But the news was far from discouraging.

 

"(The doctors) are going to wait until the swelling goes down to see how the fractures need to heal. Then there will be a decision made on whether or not to have surgery," said Spinners manager Bruce Crabbe. "There's a chance he might not.

 

"He'll be on a liquid diet for about six weeks," Crabbe said. "But all the tests as far as brain functions came out good. It's as positive as it can be."

TAKE ME HOME: Nashville is the only PCL club without a player with at least 50 RBIs this season (each of the other 15 league clubs has at least two players with 50+ RBIs). Sean Halton currently leads the club with 44 RBIs. The lowest team-leading RBI total in Sounds history was Jeff Treadway’s 59 in 1987.

I wouldn't want to even contemplate what would necessitate bringing up Vargas to pitch in September. With Thornburg, Peralta, and Marcum likely on their way to pitch, then I'd imagine that a Vargas call up would only be due to an injury to Gallardo or something catastrophic to Thornburg or Peralta---perish the thought.

Wisconsin batters Peoria

 

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Shaun Marcum pitched six strong innings and the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers offense hammered out twelve hits in an 8-1 win over the Peoria Chiefs Monday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Marcum picked up the win in his third rehabilitation start for the Rattlers. Ben McMahan led the way for the offense with three hits, three runs, and two RBI.

 

Wisconsin (72-53 overall, 28-28 second half) scored three times in the bottom of the first inning. Peoria was charged with two errors in the inning to help the Rattlers get off to the fast start. Chadwin Stang reached on an infield single and Max Walla both reached on an error to start the inning. A sacrifice fly by Brandon Macias drove in Stang for the 1-0 lead.

 

McMahan followed with a single to right. Walla, who was running on the pitch, would score when the Peoria right fielder overran the ball. Greg Hopkins doubled later in the frame to send McMahan home for a 3-0 lead.

 

McMahan hit a two-run homer in the third inning to extend the Rattlers lead to 5-0. In the fourth inning, Rafael Neda led off with a double. Yadiel Rivera followed with an RBI single and Wisconsin was up 6-0.

 

Peoria (56-69, 21-35) got a run off Marcum in the top of the fifth. Jacob Rogers drew a walk with one out. A two out double by Bijan Radamacher drove in Rogers.

 

The Rattlers got that run back in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI grounder from Hopkins and took a 7-1 lead.

 

Marcum tossed a scoreless sixth inning before calling it a night. He allowed one run on four hits, walked one, and struck out three. Marcum, who was on a 75 pitch limit, threw 71 pitches - 50 for strikes - and was in line for the win.

 

Wisconsin added one more run. Macias tripled with one out in the seventh and scored on a passed ball.

 

That was more than enough for reliever Jacob Barnes. The Rattlers right-hander tossed three scoreless innings, struck out three, and earned his third save of the season.

 

The final game of the four game series is Tuesday afternoon. Mark Williams (7-9, 3.86) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Jeff Antigua (1-2, 1.99) is set to start for the Chiefs. Game time is 12:05pm.

Shaun Marcum looked good in his six innings. He gave up just one run on four hits. Jacob Barnes held the Chiefs scoreless in the final three innings. Each pitcher struck out three Peoria hitters.

 

Ben McMahan had a big offensive night, going 3-3 with two RBI and three runs scored. Brandon Macias went 2-4 with a triple and scored two runs. Rafael Neda was 2-4 with a double, which could have possibly been a triple, but he stumbled coming around first base. Yadiel Rivera also went 2-4. Greg Hopkins was 1-3 with a walk (just his 16th walk of the season). Chadwin Stang singled, walked and stole a base.
