Final: Peoria 4, Wisconsin 3

 

Peoria edges Rattlers in 4-3 win

 

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Peoria Chiefs broke a 2-2 tie with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings and held on for a 4-3 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Sunday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The loss was Wisconsin's second straight to the Chiefs.

 

Zeke DeVoss started the game with a triple. A sacrifice fly by Dustin Geiger put Peoria (56-68 overall, 21-34 second half) in front 1-0.

 

Geiger struck again with two outs in the third inning. He lined a solo homer to left. Geiger's sixteenth home run of the season made it 2-0.

 

The Rattlers (71-53, 27-28) pounced on a Peoria miscue to tie the game in the bottom of the third. Yadiel Rivera was at second with two outs and Ben McMahan struck out. But, the ball eluded catcher Chadd Krist to allow McMahan to reach, Rivera to take third base, and the inning to continue.

 

Nick Ramirez was down to a 1-2 count against Peoria starter Yao-Lin Wang. Ramirez pulled the next pitch just inside the first base bag and two runs scored as the ball rattled around in the right field corner. That tied the game 2-2.

 

Peoria took advantage of three straight one out walks by Wisconsin reliever Eric Semmelhack in the top of the seventh inning. A slow roller to short by Pin-Chieh Chen got the go ahead run home.

 

Wes Darvill provided an insurance run with a two-out RBI single in the eighth inning for a 4-2 advantage.

 

Wisconsin tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth. Max Walla drew a one out walk and Rivera singled to center. That forced the Chiefs to make a pitching change from Justin Berg to Larry Suarez.

 

After the change, Chadwin Stang grounded into a force play at second base and the Rattlers had runners at the corners with two outs. Brandon Macias was down to his last strike against Suarez when he got a seeing-eye single into right field to score Walla. Stang raced for third on the play and - when he drew a throw - Macias took second to get the winning run into scoring position.

 

But, Suarez denied the Rattlers a Sunday comeback by retiring McMahan on a popup to end the game.

 

Game three of the series is Monday night. Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Shaun Marcum will make his third rehabilitation start for the Timber Rattlers. Peoria has Joe Zeller (2-3, 3.05) as their scheduled starting pitcher. Game time is 7:05pm.

 

One fan in attendance at the game will win Marcum's game-worn jersey.

 

On Monday, the Dark KnightTM is taking time away from Gotham City to greet citizens at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Batman will be available to meet & greet fans and pose for photographs throughout the evening.

Yadiel Rivera had the only multi-hit game of the day for the Rattlers. He went 2-3 with a walk and scored a run. Nick Ramirez knocked in two runs, going 1-4. Chadwin Stang, Cameron Garfield and Greg Hopkins each had a hit and a walk. Garfield and Max Walla each stole a base.

 

Chad Thompson pitched in his first game in a month after coming off the DL and was solid in five innings. He gave up two runs on four hits and struck out five. Eric Semmelhack relieved him and gave up two runs in 2.2 innings. Michael Strong pitched the final 1.1 innings. He allowed two hits and three walks but did not give up a run.

Storm Chasers Take Second Straight From Sounds, 5-1

Odorizzi Deals In First Start Against His Former Organization

 

PAPILLION, Neb. - Former Brewers prospect Jake Odorizzi held the Nashville offense in check and Omaha belted three home runs as the Storm Chasers handed the Nashville Sounds a 5-1 defeat on Sunday afternoon at Werner Park.

 

Odorizzi (10-2) allowed only one run on four hits over seven innings of work, walking two and striking out a pair of batters during his 86-pitch effort. The right-hander lowered his ERA to 2.80 at the Triple-A level and picked up his 14th overall victory, one off the minor league lead.

 

Center fielder David Lough gave Omaha a 1-0 lead in the home half of the second when he belted a two-out solo homer to right off Sounds starter Hiram Burgos, the outfielder's 10th roundtripper of the year.

 

The Storm Chasers increased the advantage to 3-0 in the fifth with two more big flies off Burgos. Second baseman Rey Navarro slugged a one-out solo shot to right, his first career Triple-A homer, and designated hitter Irving Falu added a two-out solo blast to right, his sixth longball of the campaign.

 

Burgos (0-2) tossed his fourth quality start in five outings for the Sounds but suffered the loss after giving up three runs on six hits, including three home runs, in his six innings of work.

 

After Odorizzi kept the Sounds' offense in check over the first five frames, Nashville finally got on the board in the top of the sixth, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

 

The Sounds loaded the bases with one out against the Omaha right-hander when Jordan Brown reached on an infield single, Taylor Green ripped a double to right off the glove of outfielder Mitch Maier, and Khris Davis drew a walk. Nashville was able to managed only one run, however, as Odorizzi limited the damage by retiring Caleb Gindl on a run-scoring groundout and popping up Jeff Bianchi to end the frame.

 

Omaha tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh against the Nashville bullpen to stretch the lead to 5-1.

 

After the Storm Chasers loaded the bags against Jesus Sanchez on a pair of walks followed by a Maier single, Anthony Seratelli laced a one-out RBI single to center to plate Navarro and chase Sanchez from the contest. Brandon Kintzler inherited a one-out, bases-loaded jam and was greeted by a high chopper comebacker off the bat of Wil Myers (3-for-3) that went for an RBI infield single to increase the Storm Chaser's lead to 5-1. The right-hander recovered to induce an inning-ending double play grounder from Clint Robinson.

 

The teams continue the series with a 7:05 p.m. contest on Monday evening. Right-hander Claudio Vargas (5-1, 3.90) will toe the rubber for the Sounds and face Omaha right-hander Nate Adcock (7-4, 4.86).

Well that's too bad, I was hoping Hiram Burgos would match Odorizzi but he couldn't keep the ball in the yard (all solo shots) and Jesus Sanchez just didn't have it at all. Hiram still pitched well enough, the offense just didn't make the best of that bases loaded 1 out opportunity against Jake to change the outlook of the game.

 

I don't mind listening to Odorizzi pitch well, in fact I expected it, but I would have rather the Sounds won 2-1 or something along those lines.

'Tees drop 14-13 slugfest to Threshers

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees finished up their six-game road trip with a wild 14-13 defeat at the hands of the Clearwater Threshers on Sunday afternoon at Bright House Field.

 

The afternoon started with the 'Tees (29-27 second half, 58-66 overall) getting on the board in the top of the first on a two-out, two-run single from Cody Hawn. Clearwater (29-26, 65-56) though would take a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the first and a big part of that came from homers by Zach Collier and Carlos Alonso off of Brevard's starting pitcher Brandon Williamson (3-9, 6.15).

 

Brevard County would answer Clearwater's four-run inning, with one of their own in the top of the second. Both Nick Shaw and Mike Walker recorded one-out RBI singles, as Shaw's drove in one run and Walker's drove in two. Shea Vucinich would close out the scoring in the inning with a sacrifice fly to right that plated Jason Rogers.

 

The Threshers scored four runs again in the second inning, this time all with two outs. Edgar Duran's sacrifice fly cut Brevard's lead to 6-5 and then Zach Collier tied the game up by reaching on an error by Vucinich, which allowed Albert Cartwright to score. Jim Murphy then blasted a two-run homer to center to give Clearwater a 8-6 lead.

 

Once again, the 'Tees would answer the Threshers' big inning in the top of the third, thanks to a two-run homer by Juan Sanchez that tied the game at 8-8.

 

After two innings, Williamson's day was over as he allowed eight runs - five of them earned - on six hits, while walking one and not recording a strikeout.

 

The game remained 8-8 until the top of the seventh inning, when Sanchez's two-run double gave Brevard a 10-8 lead and then back-to-back two-out RBI singles from Rogers and Walker gave the Manatees a 12-8 lead.

 

Seth Harvey had relieved Williamson in the third and threw three scoreless innings, while striking out three batters. Thomas Keeling came on for the 'Tees in the sixth and after throwing a scoreless sixth, ran into trouble in the seventh and eighth.

 

After a John Hill sacrifice fly in the seventh cut Brevard's lead to 12-9, the 'Tees were able to pad their lead to 13-9 in the eighth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Sanchez.

 

Keeling retired the first two batters in the eighth but then allowed a double to Christopher Duffy and then a single by Alonso plated Duffy and made it a 13-10 game. After yielding a single to Lavin, Keeling was lifted for Greg Holle. Holle proceeded to allow back-to-back RBI singles to Harold Martinez and Cameron Rupp as Clearwater's deficit was now cut to just one run.

 

Brevard was unable to plate a run in the top of the ninth as the Threshers now had a chance to win it in the bottom of the ninth. Duran would strike out to lead off the inning, but would reach base on the dropped third strike as Cody Hawn could not make the catch on Joey Paciorek's throw.

 

Drew Hillman then sacrificed Duran to second on a bunt and then Murphy singled to center to plate Duran, as Murphy would get all the way to third thanks to a fielding error by Reggie Keen. With the game now tied, Rogers came in from the outfield to be Brevard's fifth infielder and Duffy was intentionally walked as the 'Tees could now either cut the winning run off at home or turn the double play.

 

Neither scenario would occur as Alonso's single to left ended the game and completed the comeback for the Threshers. The loss capped off a 1-5 road trip for the Manatees. Brevard began the trip just one game back of first place and they will come home three games back with 13 games remaining on the regular season schedule.

 

Brevard County and Clearwater combined for 27 runs, 35 hits and seven errors on the wild afternoon. Brevard's 17 hits were one shy of a season-high and the 'Tees were 8-for-16 with runners in scoring position.

 

Six Manatees recorded at least two hits as Rogers tallied four and Sanchez notched three and five RBI. Walker drove in three runs and Hawn added two RBI of his own.

 

After an off day on Monday, the 'Tees will be back in action at Space Coast Stadium for their final homestand of the season, beginning on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. against the Lakeland Flying Tigers (30-25, 66-54).

 

Box Score

 

Well, it was a good game if you like tons of runs, hits, and errors along with a smattering of failed 1-run strategy. 17 hits for BC headlined by Jason Rogers (4-6) and Juan Sanchez (3-4 2B HR). It was Sanchez's 1st action in 12 days, so it makes sense he knocks in 5 with a bomb and two other hits. John Dishon (2-3 2 BB) was a beast too making the 8 and 9-holes in the BC lineup particularly fearsome.

 

As should be obvious, the pitchers had it rough. Some of that is on the D, especially with the game on the line. There was one beacon of hope in Seth Harvey. Click the link to check out his very impressive career stats. Seth has risen to top of the BC bullpen list.

 

The Cody Hawn and Reggie Keen errors are unacceptable. After big nights at the plate for each, I am sure they will remember the defensive miscues more than anything.

Threshers rally to edge Manatees 14-13

August 19, 2012 - The Clearwater Threshers won in extremely exciting fashion on Sunday, rallying to top the Brevard County Manatees 14-13 in a wild game.

 

It was the day of the hitters on a sultry sunny afternoon, as the teams combined for 27 runs on 35 hits. There were also seven errors and 10 walks, contributing the matchup which lasted nearly three-and-a-half hours.

 

Trailing 13-12 in the bottom of the ninth, the Threshers used two hits and two errors to rally and score the tying and game-winning runs to win in dramatic walk-off fashion.

 

Neither starting pitcher found any kind of rhythm on the mound, as Threshers lefty Austin Wright was unable to complete three innings. He was tagged for eight runs (six earned) on nine hits, and also walked three batters. Manatees starter Brandon Williamson wasn't much better better, as he yielded eight runs (five earned) on six hits and a walk.

 

Early home runs helped fuel the Threshers in the beginning stages of the game, as Zach Collier hit his third round-tripper in as many games, while Jim Murphy and Carlos Alonso also went deep off Williamson. Brevard's big inning was in the top of the second, as they plated four men off the strength of RBI hits by Nick Shaw and Shea Vucinich.

 

The game's pace picked up in the middle innings, as Threshers right Hector Neris posted 3.1 shutout innings, while Manatees righty Seth Harvey went three shutout frames. The bats came alive again in the latter third of the matchup however, as both teams scored in the seventh and eighth before the Threshers put it away in the ninth.

 

Brevard plated four more runners in their half of the seventh, as Juan Sanchez hit a two-run double while Jason Rogers and Mike Walker contributed RBI singles to bring more teammates home. The Threshers countered with one in the seventh and three in the eighth, as Pete Lavin, Harold Martinez, and Carlos Alonso all contributed RBI singles.

 

In the bottom of the ninth, the Threshers put their first man on when Edgar Duran struck out but reached when the catcher's throw was errant to first base. After a sac bunt moved Duran to second, Jim Murphy lined an RBI single to center which scored Duran and allowed Murphy to go all the way to third on an error by center fielder Reggie Keen. Anthony Hewitt came on to pinch run at third, and after an intentional walk to Chris Duffy, Alonso lined an RBI single into right field to plate Hewitt and score the winning run.

 

Martinez finished 4 for 5, while Alonso went 3 for 6 to help lead the home team. Rogers finished 4 for 6 for Brevard while Sanchez went 3 for 4 with a home run and five RBIs.

 

The Threshers will take a day off along with the rest of the league on Monday, and then return to action at Bright House Field Tuesday to start a three-game series with the Daytona Cubs.

 

Shark Bites:

 

Tyler Knigge, the former Threshers closer earlier this year, has a 3.71 ERA and two saves for Double-A Reading... The Threshers are 10-9 this season in games that are tied after eight innings... Only two teams have an ERA higher than the Threshers in the month of August, while only three teams have a higher team batting average this month.

Another loss for the Brewers but there are interesting tidbits to mention.

 

Jose Pena seems to be handling the promotion okay with a 2-hit game including his 2nd HR for Helena. He seems primed to join the full season ranks with a strong off-season. Ruben Ozuna was in the leadoff spot again and he smacked another 2 hits and stole his 9th base. Ruben turns 21 tomorrow and now, with a solid finish, can claim three straight solid seasons at the plate. The fielding is another story. Paul Eshleman, who is not the best with the bat, cracked 2 2B's tonight.

 

On the mound, Ryan Gibbard was hit hard. The electric Damien Magnifico came on next for an extended relief outing. He was pretty good again. 3 IP 4 H 2 R 1 ER 2 BB 4 K 2 WP and 2:2 GO:FO for Damien. In all honestly, I was kind of expecting Evan Fredrickson-esque wildness from Magnifico, but he seems to have a much better handle than that. Cool!

 

Alfredo Rodriguez went hitless and made his 17th error. Ozuna also made another error but he did gun out a guy at 2nd base too.

After a rocky 1st, starter Johnnie Lowe tossed five shutout innings. He allowed a solo HR to lead off the 7th, but was able to finish the inning without allowing another baserunner. All in all, a good outing from Lowe. Unfortunately, he was matched up against Jose Lugo, who also went seven strong innings... but allowed just one hit, two BBs... & zero runs.

 

Well, let's just say the Stars were happy to see Lugo out of the game. They wasted no time, and put together a four-hit, four-run 8th to take the lead they wouldn't relinquish. Brian Garman pitched around a walk to hold the Braves off the scoreboard in the 8th, and Darren Byrd slammed the door with a perfect inning for the save.

 

Hainley Statia led the way on offense, including notching the only Huntsville hit against Lugo. After seeing his 12-game hitting streak snapped yesterday (going 0-5), Scooter Gennett again went hitless, but still contributed with a sac fly that plated the fourth run in the 8th. Brock Kjeldgaard, Kentrail Davis, Adam Weisenburger, and Statia were the four players to come up with hits in the crucial 8th-inning rally.

Chiefs' Soler records first four-hit game

Cubs outfield prospect homers, raises batting average to .391

Six games into his Chiefs' career, Jorge Soler is proving to be a quick study.

 

The Cubs prospect went 4-for-5 with a homer, two RBIs and two runs scored, falling a triple shy of the cycle, as Class A Peoria routed Wisconsin, 9-2, on Saturday night.

 

After singling and stealing second base in the second inning, Soler got another base hit in the fourth. He homered leading off the sixth and doubled home another run in the seventh. Soler ended his night by grounding out to third base.

 

"He had a plan at the plate and made a good adjustment," Chiefs hitting coach Barbaro Garbey said. "He used the whole field today, he was very good. He hit the fastball away, the breaking ball in and the breaking ball away for a homer. He showed he's the type of guy who is going to be a quality hitter and uses the whole field."

 

After signing with the Cubs on June 11, the Cuban outfielder made his professional debut in the Rookie-level the Arizona League and batted .241 with two homers and 10 RBis in 14 games. In six Midwest League games, he's hitting .391 with two homers and eight RBIs.

 

"The best thing he's been doing is that he's been paying attention to the pitcher and how they are pitching to him," Garbey said. "And his pitch selection has been good, and that will help him a lot. He shows great discipline at the plate and great patience, and that's why he's been successful.

 

"He will move up a little faster than expected if he continues to have a good pitch selection and the same approach he's been showing at the plate and using the whole field. That's the most important thing."

 

For a 20-year-old from a foreign country who signed a multi-million dollar deal, acclimating to life in the Minor Leagues can be daunting. Not so for Soler, according to Garbey.

 

"In Cuba, it's a different game like we all know," the Cuban-born former Major Leaguer said. "It's a different game from college to pro level and from Cuba, it's very different. So he has to learn the way the organization wants him to play.

 

"He looks at everybody as a teammate and everyone feels comfortable with him. He's adjusting well with how you're supposed to be in the clubhouse. He's a young guy who is going to get along with everyone with the way he conducts himself in the clubhouse and in the field."

 

Jacob Rogers had two hits and drove in two runs for the Chiefs, who also got a pair of RBIs from Timothy Saunders.

 

Peoria starter Michael Jensen earned his 10th win after striking out seven and allowing two runs -- one earned -- on three hits over five innings.

Leading the way was Clint Coulter (1-1 4 BB). Despite just 42 AB's his SR year of HS, Coulter has displayed an advanced approach at the plate. The K's are somewhat concerning as it they mat indicate a longish swing, but his overall numbers have not suffered. Coulter's August line: .333/.500/.529 with a 15:16 BB:K and 5 XBH.

 

There are plenty of others to mention at the plate. Edgardo Rivera went 1-4 with a BB and SB. Jalen Harris went 1-3 with 2 BB and SB. Dustin Houle went 2-5 with a 2B. Taylor Smith-Brennan stacked good games with a 2-4 night with a 3B, BB and 5 RBI. Jose Garcia, who has been starting for the promoted Jose Pena, went 2-5 with a Bomberotti. Rounding out the hitters, Dionis Hinojosa went 1-2 with a BB and HBP making it three times on base for him.

 

On the mound, Vinnie Chulk made a successful rehab start throwing the rare scoreless inning in this one. Mike Francisco was thrown to the wolves for almost 5 innings as he gave up most of the damage. Ryan Fasano did come on to close things out. Ryan got 10 outs allowing 4 H 1 R 1 ER 1 BB and recording 3 K and 3 GO for a multi-inning save.

 

Think back a few months to the draft. The Brewers are thinking hitters. We need a SS. Why not pop Tanner Rahier in the 1st or Suppy 1st rounds, right? In fact, after we did not, I can remember Keith Law chastising us. Law is bullish on Rahier, but our guy Coulter has had the better career thus far. After being taken in the 2nd round by the Reds and signing for overslot, expectations were that Rahier would hit the AZL League hard. That has not been the case.

Thompson sharp, Rattlers not in loss to Peoria

GRAND CHUTE — Pitching his first game in nearly a month, Chad Thompson felt refreshed and recharged.

 

Wisconsin hitters couldn’t make the same claim.

 

The Timber Rattlers struggled at the plate Sunday afternoon, failing to back a solid performance by their pitching staff in a 4-3 Midwest League home loss to Peoria.

 

The Rattlers (71-53 overall, 27-28 second half) matched the Chiefs’ total of seven hits, but stranded nine baserunners and were just two-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

 

Wisconsin’s lack of clutch hitting was especially glaring in the late innings. The Rattlers loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but came away scoreless. Wisconsin threatened again in the ninth and slashed Peoria’s lead to a single run on Brandon Macias’ RBI single.

 

But with the potential tying run on third base and the possible winning run on second, Chiefs reliever Larry Suarez retired No. 3 hitter, Ben McMahan, on a game-ending infield pop-up.

 

“It was just one of those days where nothing seemed to fall and we couldn’t catch a break,” said Wisconsin first baseman Nick Ramirez. “We had some good plays made on us and things just happened to roll their way.”

 

Ramirez was one of the few productive Wisconsin hitters. The slugging first baseman tied the game at 2-2 in the third by drilling a two-run double down the first-base-line.

 

Ramirez, the Milwaukee Brewers’ fourth-round pick out of Cal State-Fullerton in the 2011 first-year player draft, leads the Rattlers in home runs (15) and RBI (63).

 

“As a first baseman, you’re not out there to hit singles,” said Ramirez. “Every opportunity I get to drive in a run, I’m going to try and capitalize.”

 

Thompson, fresh off the disabled list following a bout with rotator cuff tendonitis, kept the Timber Rattlers in the game. He had a shaky opening inning where he allowed a run and threw a wild pitch, but settled down and turned in a decent outing. The 6-foot-8 right-hander surrendered two runs on four hits with five strikeouts and only one walk in five innings. He departed with the score tied 2-2.

 

"I felt great — felt strong,” said Thompson, who threw 78 pitches. “I was a little excited and anxious that first inning after being on the DL (disabled list) for a month. Our trainer, Pax (Jeff Paxson) told me that my body was just tired and we needed to recondition it, so we worked a lot on getting my legs stronger.

 

“Every inning, I felt a little better. I could have gone at least another inning, but I was on a pitch count.”

 

Peoria also received sound pitching from starter Yao-Lin Wang and relievers Justin Berg and Suarez.

 

Berg, a Wisconsin native, has major league experience. The Antigo product made 60 appearances with the Chicago Cubs from 2009 to 2011 and is attempting to come back from Tommy John surgery. The right-hander has made 10 relief appearances with the Chiefs, compiling a 0-2 record with a 6.10 earned run average.

 

“He’s got some run to his fastball and it has some good downward tail,” said Ramirez. “He’s what you would expect from a quality pitcher who has been where he’s been.”

 

Ramirez was also impressed with Wang, the starting and winning pitcher, who struck out seven and allowed five hits with seven strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.

 

“He had a really good curveball and did a good job of keeping us off balance,” said Ramirez. “He bounced a few curveballs, but he kept everything down.”

 

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Shaun Marcum will make his third rehab appearance with the Timber Rattlers today in a 7:05 p.m. home game against Peoria.

Late rally powers Owlz past Brewers

Michael Snyder scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh inning, and Sherman Johnson added an insurance solo home run in the eighth, powering the Orem Owlz to a 6-4 Pioneer League home win over the Helena Brewers on Sunday afternoon.

 

Jake Boyd (2-0) pitched 2 2/3 innings of one-hit relief with four strikeouts to get the win for the Owlz on a night where both starters got roughed up early.

 

Helena’s Ryan Gibbard lasted just four innings on the mound and allowed eight hits, three earned runs and a walk while striking out three.

 

Damien Magnifico (0-2) entered in relief in the fifth inning and took the loss after a wild three-inning stint in which he allowed four hits and two runs, walked two, tossed a pair of wild pitches and struck out four batters.

 

Orem starter Gabriel Perez stuck around for 5 2/3 innings despite giving up nine hits, four earned runs and a walk while striking out four.

 

Robert Powell was perfect in getting the final two outs from the mound for the Owlz to get his fourth save.

 

Wendell Soto was 2 for 4 with a double and a pair of RBIs to lead the Orem offense. The Owlz outhit the Brewers 13-10 on the night and stranded nine runners to Helena’s seven.

 

Jose Pena had a two-run homer in the second inning that momentarily knotted the score for Helena early, and finished 2 for 4. Paul Eshleman and Ruben Ozuna had two hits apiece.

 

Helena is off today and opens a four-game homestand against Grand Junction on Tuesday.

STARS COME BACK TO BEAT M-BRAVES

 

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - For the third time in as many games, the Huntsville Stars won a game when trailing after the seventh inning and beat the Mississippi Braves by a score of 4-3 on Sunday night at Trustmark Park.

 

To begin the game, the Stars trailed from the get-go. In the first inning, a RBI single by M-Braves outfielder Evan Gattis and a RBI groundout by catcher Shawn McGill put them on top by a score of 2-0.

 

The score stayed that way all the way until the seventh inning, where M-Braves shortstop Jaime Pedroza crushed a solo homer over the right-field wall off of Stars starter Johnnie Lowe to put the lead at 3-0.

 

However, the Stars resiliency struck once again in the eighth inning. After M-Braves starter Jose Lugo was taken out of the game following seven scoreless innings, Huntsville took to the M-Braves bullpen to begin their comeback. With RHP Eric Cordier in the ballgame, the Stars started off the inning with back-to-back singles by left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard and right fielder Kentrail Davis. One batter later, an RBI single by catcher Adam Weisenburger plated Kjeldgaard to cut the Stars deficit to two. After a walk to center fielder Josh Prince loaded the bases, a two-run single by shortstop Hainley Statia tied up the game. Later in the inning, a sacrifice fly by second baseman Scooter Gennett gave the Stars the lead for good.

 

On the pitching side, Lowe improved to 3-3 with the victory, giving up three runs and seven hits while striking out five in seven innings of work. Reliever Brian Garman added a scoreless eighth inning and Darren Byrd sent down the M-Braves in order in the ninth for his sixth save of the season.

 

For the Stars, the victory was their third in as many games. Combined with a loss from the Chattanooga Lookouts on Sunday, the Stars are now six games back of a playoff spot with 14 regular season games remaining.

 

The Stars and M-Braves will continue with game two of their five-game series on Monday. First pitch from Trustmark Park is at 7:00 PM.
